A lens comprises an internal cavity structure formed by dissolution of a soluble insert material. The internal soluble material may dissolve through a body of a lens such as a contact lens in order to form the cavity within the contact lens. The cavity within the lens can be shaped in many ways, and corresponds to the shape of the dissolved material, such that many internal cavity shapes can be readily fabricated within the contact lens. The insert can be placed in a mold with a pre-polymer material, and the pre-polymer material cured with the insert placed in the mold to form the lens body. The polymerized polymer may comprise a low expansion polymer in order to inhibit expansion of the lens when hydrated. The polymer may comprise a hydrogel when hydrated. The soft contact lens material comprises a sufficient amount of cross-linking to provide structure to the lens and shape the cavity.

Accommodating lens with cavity

An intraocular lens is provided that includes a refractive element and a mask. The refractive element has a first power in a first meridian and a second power greater than the first power in a second meridian. A magnitude of the first and second powers and a location of the first and second meridians are configured to correct astigmatism in a human eye. The mask is configured to block a substantial portion of light from passing through an annular region thereof and to permit a substantial portion of light to pass through a central aperture thereof to enhance an astigmatism correction rotational misplacement range and depth of focus.

A low or high refractive index corneal inlay optical lens adapted to be inserted singly or multiply between the layers of a cornea to correct refractive errors in eyesight, wherein the implanted lens is a solid transparent uncoated lens having no apertures therethrough, of a diameter less than that of the optic zone of the eye under normal light or bright light conditions, such that the movement of fluids, nutrients and gases throughout the corneal layers is unimpeded, and wherein the composition of the lens or lenses relative to that of the surrounding stromal tissue are such that multiple refractive indices may be created and multiple focal corrections are possible.

Corneal inlay lenses

A low or high refractive index corneal inlay optical lens adapted to be inserted between the layers of a cornea to correct refractive errors in eyesight, wherein the implanted lens is of a size or configuration that permits unimpeded passage of nutrients and gases throughout the corneal layers and wherein the composition of the lens relative to that of the surrounding stromal tissue is such that multi-refractive indices may be created and multi-focal corrections are possible.

Method of implanting corneal inlay lenses smaller than the optic zone

An intraocular lens, including an optic having an optic body with a posterior surface and first and second circumferentially spaced spacing tabs at the periphery of the optic body. Each of the spacing tabs extends radially outwardly from the periphery of the optic body and axially of the optic body in the same axial direction. A haptic is mounted on the optic and projects generally radially outwardly of the periphery of the optic. With this construction, the intraocular lens can be implanted in the eye, with the spacing tabs in contact with the wall of the capsular bag to space the posterior surface of the optic from the wall of the capsular bag.

Intraocular lens with a vaulted optic

An intraocular lens with an iris retention loop that is attached to an optical section of the lens by a pair of shank sections. Each shank section has a noncircular cross sectional area to provide a more flattened contact surface for engaging an inner edge of the iris. Such structure reduces cutting of the iris when the iris is stretched over these shank sections to retain the lens in the eye.

An intraocular lens or surgical tool used for eye surgery which is covered with a biocompatible water-soluble adherent film coating that has a very slow dissolution rate which maintains at least 40% of the coating on the lens for at least 30 minutes, but not more than 24 hours, when submerged in an aqueous media simulating the surgical environment. Polyvinyl alcohol is an example of such coating that is dissolvable in water and provides swellable outer portions of the coating that are sluffable so as to be self-sacrificing in protecting against both static and sliding contact with a corneal endothelium.

Coated intraocular lens and surgical tool

A method of treating an intraocular lens or ophthalmic surgical tool with a water-soluble adherent film forming material, such as polyvinyl alcohol, in a liquid media after which the liquid media is evaporatively removed to provide a dehydrated coating that is both water-soluble and liquid swellable. The device is packaged and sterilized, such as by ethylene oxide, and supplied to the ophthalmologist. Immediately prior to its use in surgery, the ophthalmologist rehydrates the coating by submerging in a sterile aqueous bath causing the coating to swell into a soft sluffable cushion for protecting a corneal endothelium during both static touch contact and dynamic sliding contact with the coated lens or tool.
