A tablet of compacted particulate detergent composition in which the tablet, or a discrete region thereof, consists essentially of a matrix of particles substantially free of particles &lt;200 .mu.m. Particles of detergent-active compound and detergent builder and optionally particles of detergent base powder are individually coated with binder/disintegrant capable, when the tablet is immersed in water, of disrupting the structure of the tablet.

Detergent tablets having specific particle size distribution

Sensitive and/or chemically reactive detergent additives can be shaped in the form of spherical particles having the desirable properties of being non-friable, non-dusty and at the same time fast-dissolving. The process comprises the steps of treating a mixture comprising said detergent additive and a hydratable material with a polymeric material of high Tg in a high-speed mixer/granulator. A preferred detergent additive is a peroxyacid bleach precursor.

Powders prepared by drying a slurry and suitable for use as detergent powders or components thereof contain (or consist of) sodium carbonate and/or the sodium carbonate/sodium sulphate double salt Burkeite the crystal forms of which have been modified by means of a low level of an organic polycarboxylate. The powders are able to absorb and retain very high levels of liquid components such as nonionic surfactants.

A particulate antifoam ingredient suitable for incorporation in a detergent powder product comprises an oily antifoam active substance effective at low wash temperatures, for example, silicone oil/hydrophobic silica or alkyl phosphate/petroleum jelly, on a carrier of swollen hydrated hydrophilic starch. The antifoam ingredient combines improved storage stability and improved flow properties with rapid release of the antifoam active substance at all wash temperatures.
