An optical data recording system and method for receiving an input data stream to be recorded on a recording medium; dividing the input data stream into a series of data sections; compressing each data section in the series into a period shorter than the period of the original section and providing data gaps between each compressed data section; recombining the compressed data sections including the data gaps into a gapped output data stream; and recording the gapped output data stream on a recording medium.

A layer of thermally deformable plastic used, for example, in a holographic recording medium has an undulated surface whereby the layer has an uneven thickness. Because of the uneven thickness, the layer has a composite spatial frequency pass band greater than the spatial frequency pass band of a layer of uniform thickness.

A plastic sheet is embossed with three angularly-multiplexed holograms to represent three colors of an image. Light is directed to the holograms from three directions, in sequence, to recreate the three colors of the image in sequence on the face of a black-and-white vidicon. The three field sequential signals from the vidicon are sequentially stored in three solid state frame memories, from which the three color-representing signals are read out simultaneously to the three guns of a color kinescope. Alternatively, the three holograms represent red, blue and luminance, and only red and blue frame memories are required, and during display the luminance-representing signal is repeatedly read out from the vidicon to the color kinescope simultaneously with repeated readout from the red and blue frame memories.

A token for use in a vending machine consists of a plastic card having at least one pair of side-by-side holograms embossed thereon. A token reader includes means to guide a token into the path of a readout beam. When two photodetectors positioned at predetermined spaced locations receive equal-amplitude first order beams from an illuminated pair of holograms, an electrically-operated plunger in the token reader operates to obliterate the pair of holograms on the token, and then a signal from a third photodetector in the token reader enables an output signal for operating the vending machine.

Each one of three filters, corresponding to different primary subtractive colors of a color picture, is embossed as a relief pattern on the same side of a plastic film within a separate one of any three of four side-by-side regions into which the film is divided. This permits the film to be thrice-folded to both (1) superimpose the three filters substantially in registration with each other and (2) place the embossed side of the film within the interior of the thrice-folded film where said filters are protected.

A standard audio cassette may be employed to provide various types of binary-coded video information, such as alphanumeric symbols and graphic elements, for display on a standard television receiver and also provide analog audio information as respective first and second components of a single composite signal applied to a suitable adaptor for inter-relating an external standard cassette player with a standard television receiver. The present invention is concerned with various improvements in the cassette recording and the adaptor. These improvements include (1) a cassette recording for simultaneous transmission of both binary-coded video information and analog audio information over a single channel, and improved coupling means in the adaptor which is responsive to such simultaneous binary and audio transmission; (2) improved coupling means in the adaptor for preventing the switching between sequentially transmitted analog audio information and binary-coded video information from being heard as audio clicks; (3) improved means for translating binary-coded alphanumeric video information which compensates for the limited video bandwidth of some standard television receivers, and (4) an improved graphic display capability, in addition to the conventional alphanumeric display capability, of a display provided on a standard television receiver.

An article such as a plastic credit card contains concealed identifying information. The information is in the form of a series of binary information bits and it is stored in an electronic serial memory. The memory is on an integrated circuit chip imbedded in the credit card with electrical connections to two terminals on opposite surfaces of the card. The stored information bits are read out from the credit card by an apparatus which supplies current to the terminals to energize readout from the serial memory. The information bits read out are in the form of sequential variations in the current flowing to the credit card which are detected and accumulated in a shift register for utilization by a display device or a computer.
