In one aspect, the present invention relates to a thermocouple device comprising a flexible non-planar substrate, a first printed thermocouple element comprising a first metal containing ink composition applied to the flexible non-planar substrate, and a second printed thermocouple element in electrical contact with the first printed thermocouple element making a thermocouple junction. The second printed thermocouple element comprises a second metal containing ink composition with a Seebeck coefficient sufficiently different from the first metal containing ink composition for the first and second printed thermocouple elements to together produce a thermocouple effect. The present application further relates to medical devices comprising the thermocouple and methods of making such devices.

Thermocouple device

Among other things, a gas storage system includes a group of capsules and an activation element coupled to the group. The group of capsules are formed within a substrate and contain gas stored at a relatively high pressure compared to atmospheric pressure. The activation element is configured to deliver energy in an amount sufficient to cause at least one of the capsules to release stored gas.

The current invention provides an endotracheal tube fabricated with an array of electrodes disposed on an inflatable cuff on the tube. The array of electrodes includes multiple sense electrodes and a current electrode. The array of electrodes on the inflatable cuff is applied using a positive displacement dispensing system, such as a MicroPen&#xae;. A ground electrode is disposed on the tube approximately midway between the inflatable cuff and the midpoint of the endotracheal tube. The endotracheal tube is partially inserted into a mammalian subject's airway such that when the inflatable cuff is inflated, thereby fixing the tube in position, the array of electrodes is brought into close contact with the tracheal mucosa in relative proximity to the aorta. The endotracheal tube is useful in the measurement of cardiac parameters such as cardiac output.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a microfluidic device which involves providing a substrate with a surface and writing a first flowable material on the surface of the substrate. The first flowable material is then solidified to form spacer elements, each with a top surface distal from the surface of the substrate, and a second flowable material is written on the surface of the substrate. A cover having a surface is provided and applied to the substrate, with the surface of the cover contacting the top surfaces of the spacer elements. The second flowable material is solidified to form walls, where the walls, the surface of the substrate, and the surface of the cover form flow channels of a microfluidic device. The resulting microfluidic device is also disclosed.

Microfluidic devices fabricated by direct thick film writing and methods thereof

A method and apparatus are presented for electrostatic deposition of dry powder to a tablet, capsule, or a specific area of any of a wide range of pharmaceutical substrates. The apparatus includes: a magnetic brush having a rotatable multi-pole magnetic core and a stationary outer shell; a developer supply for supplying a magnetic developer powder, consisting of a magnetic carrier particles and pharmaceutical dry powder particles, to the magnetic brush; a print head on the outer shell; a tablet or other pharmaceutical substrate arranged in spaced relation to the print head to define a pharmaceutical powder transfer region through which the substrate can be moved. The print head includes an array of microchannels for forming a plurality of parallel lines of developer in the channels, a corresponding plurality of transfer electrodes located in the microchannels for selectively transferring pharmaceutical powder from the lines to a substrate, driver circuitry for generating and applying transfer signals to the transfer electrodes, a power supply connection for applying power to the drive circuitry, a print signal input connection for applying print signals to the print head, and a logic and control circuit for applying the print signals to the drive circuitry. In one embodiment the width of an individual microchannel print head and the rotating multipole magnetic core is approximately the same dimension as the tablet or substrate to which pharmaceutical powder is to be deposited. In a further embodiment individual microchannel print heads can be arranged along the length of the shell to simultaneously deposit pharmaceutical powder to an array of tablets. In still a further embodiment the microchannel print head is shaped to conform to the tablet or capsule geometry to enhance deposition in three dimensions. In another embodiment the microchannel print head is formed on a silicon substrate onto which are also formed a multiplicity of individual drive circuits connected through separate conductive paths to individual transfer electrodes. In a further embodiment all the microelectronic circuitry necessary for the operation of the integrated microchannel print head is formed on the silicon substrate.

Dry powder electrostatic deposition method and apparatus

Electrographic printing apparatus for forming a toner image on a recording medium includes: a magnetic brush having a rotatable magnetic core and a stationary outer cylindrical shell; a developer supply for supplying a magnetic developer powder to the magnetic brush; an array of microchannels on the outer shell for forming a plurality of parallel lines of developer in the channels; means for selectively transferring developer from the lines to a receiver; and a receiver electrode arranged in spaced relation to the array of microchannels to define a recording region through which the receiver can be moved.

A fabricated wafer incorporates features suitable for integration in a multiple wafer structure. Such a wafer has a predetermined pattern formed therein comprising components for use in the multiple wafer structure and a plurality of locating features generally surrounding the predetermined pattern for cooperating with a mechanical aligning fixture.

A method of registrably aligning wafers prior to bonding uses an assembly jig having a plurality of upstanding aligning elements each of which is arranged to registrably align with one of a predetermined number of locating features of the wafers. The locating features of the wafers are arranged about a corresponding upstanding aligning element of the jig prior to bonding the wafers.

An improved microminiature radiation reflector is formed in a silicon support body with a fabricated cantilever member extending over a cavity that has been etched in the support body. The cantilever member has a reflection surface for reflecting incident radiation to a first position when the cantilever member is not deflected. An electromagnet is formed in the silicon support body adjacent the free end of the cantilever member for deflecting the cantilever member into the cavity of the support body so as to cause incident radiation to be reflected to a second position. An array of radiation reflectors is also disclosed for forming images from electrical signals applied to the electromagnets of selected ones of the radiation reflectors as a function of the position of their reflected radiation in the to be formed image.

A light modulator for modulating a beam of light of wavelength .lambda. including a substrate, a fixed electrode formed over the substrate and arranged to reflect light; an insulative transparent layer defining a modulating region formed over the fixed electrode wherein the height of the insulative transparent layer is substantially an odd multiple of .lambda./n4, where n is the refractive index of the insulative transparent layer; the plurality of electrodes having a coiled portion disposed adjacent to the modulating region and effective in a first configuration wherein the coiled portion remains coiled and in a second flat configuration in response to a voltage applied between the plurality of electrodes and the fixed electrode for uncoiling the coiled portion so that it is in the second flat configuration over the modulating region; a top surface of the plurality of electrodes being made of a reflective material; and applying a voltage across the plurality of electrodes and the fixed electrode to uncoil the coiled portion so that it is in the second flat configuration and its top surface is arranged to reflect light illuminating the modulating region so that light reflected from the top surface of the plurality of electrodes interferes with the light reflected from the fixed electrode to modulate the light which illuminates the light modulating region.
