The present invention provides a water redispersible polymer powder (RDP) for use in the preparation of non-cementitious exterior finishing compositions such as textured paint formulations. Also provided are non-cementitious exterior finishing compositions comprising such RDPs and a method of coating a surface with such a finishing composition. When the RDP of the invention is incorporated into an exterior finishing composition such as a topcoat formulation of an external insulation finishing system (EIFS), the resultant composition provides improved dirt pickup resistance without a loss in wet abrasion resistance over conventional textured paint formulations comprising acrylic latex powders and, preferably, acrylic latexes.

Acrylic redispersible polymer powder for non-cementitious exterior finishing compositions

A cured coating composition and substrate coated with the cured coating composition which coating is based upon an aqueous acid binder solution containing phosphate and chromate and/or molybdate ions into which has been dispersed a blend of metallic powder particles of three primary dimensions and flat metal flake materials, which can be applied to a substrate part to be coated more uniformly and thickly than conventional metal flake coatings, and which imparts better corrosion and impact resistance than conventional powder metal coatings.

Flake materials in coating compositions

A coating composition based upon an aqueous acid binder solution containing phosphate and chromate and/or molybdate ions into which has been dispersed a blend of metallic powder particles of three primary dimensions and flat metal flake materials, which can be applied to a substrate part to be coated more uniformly and thickly than conventional metal flake coatings, and which imparts better corrosion and impact resistance than conventional powder metal coatings.

Coating composition

A coating composition and method of making the same wherein the composition includes an acid binder aqueous solution which comprises phosphate ions and ions from the group of chromate or molybdate ions and thixotropic ingredients for forming a three dimensional crosslinked network which renders the composition in a gel state when not subjected to movement and in a liquid state when subjected to movement. Surface tension modifying ingredients reduce surface tension of the composition without loss of the three dimensional, crosslinked network.
