For a family sewing machine having the capabilities to complete a buttonhole in a single step, an arrangement is provided to permit an operator to reinitiate the buttonhole operation in the event of a thread breakage in the middle of the buttonhole, however, without necessitating stitching during that part of the buttonhole in which stitching has already been implemented. If a thread breakage takes place and after repair thereof the buttonhole may be repositioned to the initiating position and the buttonhole pattern may be reselected together with, for example, a selection of reverse feeding or any other input which is not normally selected during buttonholing. This dual selection is effective to signal the needle bar release logic to suspend endwise reciprocation of the needle bar. The sewing machine feed proceeds as though stitching were taking place, and just before the point of thread breakage is reached the needle bar release logic can be defeated so that stitching may proceed from a point one or two stitches prior to the point of breakage.

The thread stripper device includes a block pivotably supporting a wire form having one end for extending beneath the feed dog for up and down motion therewith, and the other end extending adjacent the thread loop retaining pin for stripping the retained loop therefrom on downward motion of the feed dog.

A buttonhole controlling device for use in causing a sewing machine to form a buttonhole of a selected length, and including means for effecting a reversal in the direction in which material is fed under a sewing needle as required for the formation of a final leg of the buttonhole, is provided with an adjustable stop enabling an operator to precisely define the end position of the final leg and so assure closure of the buttonhole without overlap.

Control device for use in sewing buttonholes

An improved mechanism for producing blind stitches with a household sewing machine, including a removable throat plate having a thread deflecting member reciprocatorily driven into engagement with a loop of thread carried by the loop taker to insure engagement of the loop of thread by a hook needle. The thread deflecting member is driven in timed relation to the rising and falling motion of the feed dog by a cam which is fastened to the feed drive shaft.

Blind stitch mechanism

A plate is provided in association with the bobbin case of a sewing machine for movement on a hinge between an open position in which the bobbin case can be readily removed from the bed of the machine, and a closed position wherein the plate holds down the bobbin case and prevents it from rotating while the machine is in operation.

This disclosure relates to needle guards for rotary loop takers in sewing machines and has its purpose prevention of interference between the needle and the loop seizing beak of the rotary loop taker during the sewing operation. A needle guard is provided which takes the form of a rib member formed in the bottom wall of the rotary loop taker which rib member is spaced from the vertical side wall of the cup-shaped rotary loop taker. The rib member is relatively thin and may be said to be resilient. Means are provided for biasing the rib member toward and away from the vertical side wall of the rotary loop taker in order that the rib member may be adjusted relative to the reciprocating path of the needle so that the needle will be deflected away from the loop seizing beak of the rotary loop taker upon penetration of the fabric by said needle and thereby prevent a scoring of the loop seizing beak or a breakage of the needle.

Adjustable needle guard

A thread shield, for a sewing machine having means to interrupt needle bar reciprocation and a take-up with a threading slot to an eyelet thereof, to discourage thread escape from the eyelet or double threading of the eyelet by loose, slung around thread. The sewing machine take-up moves in an up and down path from an uppermost position, where thread may be drawn to the eyelet by way of the threading slot, to a lower position where appreciable slack thread forms when the needle bar reciprocation is interrupted. At the position where appreciable slack thread forms, the take-up moves closely adjacent to an upstanding rib which overlaps the entry to the threading slot thus to deter thread loops from reentering the threading slot. The forward surface of the upstanding rib is tapered in a horizontal plane towards the take-up lever to impede thread, which might otherwise move from the eyelet rearwardly down the threading slot to the threading slot entry. The forward surface of the upstanding rib is also curved in a vertical plane to form a minimum angle of 90.degree. with the projection of the top surface of the take-up lever on the vertical plane, to discourage a loop of thread slung about the take-up from being drawn back during the up stroke of the take-up to a position where it will re-enter the threading slot to double thread or unthread the take-up.
