Methods are provided for treating astigmatism in an eye of a patient. An axis of greater curvature of the eye is determined. A stiffening process is applied to a cornea of the eye in a pattern defined from the axis of greater curvature of the eye.

Corneal stiffening for treating astigmatism

Systems and methods are provided for evaluating an eye of a patient. A modeling component is configured to determine a representation of at least the cornea of the eye from a three-dimensional structural image of the eye and at least one biomechanical property of the eye. A feature extractor is configured to extract a plurality of features from the model of at least the cornea of the eye. An ectasia evaluation component is configured to calculate at least one parameter associated with the risk of ectasia in the eye from the extracted plurality of features. A system output is configured to provide the calculated at least one parameter to one of a treatment system and a user.

Predicting and mitigating risk of ectasia and optimizing therapeutic outcomes

Systems and method are provided for evaluating a biomechanical property of tissue. A shear wave generator is configured to induce a shear wave in the tissue. An optical coherence tomography (OCT) imager is configured to capture a B-scan frame of the tissue. An image processing component is configured to determine a frequency of the shear wave in the tissue from the B-scan frame of the tissue at each of a plurality of locations within the B-scan. A parameter calculation component is configured to calculate a value for the biomechanical property for a plural subset of the plurality of locations within the B-scan frame of the tissue from the determined frequency of the shear wave at each of the plural subset of the plurality of locations.

Measurement of biomechanical properties in an OCT image

Systems and methods are provided for volumetric analysis of pathologies. A segmentation component is configured to determine, for each of a series of images of a region of interest containing a pathological feature, a set of segmentation boundaries within the image representing a cross-section of the pathological feature. A mesh generation component is configured to link the sets of segmentation boundaries from adjacent images in the series of images to generate a polygonal mesh representing a volumetric reconstruction of the pathological feature. A volumetric measurement component is configured to calculate volumetric parameters from the volumetric reconstruction representing the pathological feature. A user interface is configured to provide the calculated volumetric parameters to an associated display.

Volumetric analysis of pathologies

Systems and methods are provided for predicting the results of a therapeutic intervention to an eye. An imaging system is configured to provide image data representing at least a portion of the eye of the patient. An input device is configured to permit a user to design a proposed therapeutic intervention for the eye of the patient. A finite element modeling component is configured to generate a finite element model representing the condition of the eye of the patient after the proposed therapeutic intervention according to the image data, the proposed therapeutic intervention, and at least one biomechanical property of tissue comprising the eye. The generated model is constructed as to have no a priori restraints on the motion of the corneal limbus. A display is configured to display the generated model to the user.

Method for modeling biomechanical properties of an eye

Provided herein are methods of protecting all or a portion of the optic nerve fiber layer within the optic nerve/lamina cribrosa (ONLC) complex in an individual in need thereof, comprising administering to the individual a therapeutically effective amount of an agent that results in crosslinking of collagen in the indiviudal's peripapillary sclera, thereby stiffening the individual's peripapillary sclera and protecting all or a portion of the optic nerve fiber layer within the ONLC of the individual. In a particular embodiment, the invention is directed to methods of treating glaucoma in an individual in need thereof, comprising administering to the individual a therapeutically effective amount of an agent that results in crosslinking of collagen in the indiviudal's peripapillary sclera, thereby stiffening the individual's peripapillary sclera and treating the glaucoma in the individual. In yet another embodiment, the invention is directed to methods of treating glaucomatous optic neuropathy in an individual in need thereof, comprising administering to the individual a therapeutically effective amount of an agent that results in crosslinking of collagen in the indiviudal's peripapillary sclera, thereby stiffening the individual's peripapillary sclera and treating the glaucomatous optic neuropathy in the individual. The method can further comprise administering to the individual a therapeutically effective amount of an agent that results in crosslinking of collagen in the indiviudal's lamina cribrosa (LC).

Treating glaucoma

Systems and methods are provided for characterizing biomechanical properties of tissue within an eye. A perturbation component introduces a stress to the eye tissue. An imaging component is operative to obtain an image of the eye tissue. A first image of the tissue can be obtained prior to the introduction of the stress and a second image of the tissue can be obtained after the introduction of the stress. An image analysis component compares the first image and the second image as to determine at least one biomechanical property of the tissue.
