What is provided is recording capability for each of the modules utilized by the first responders and other personnel within the area of the incident, with the stored information at each of the first responders' modules being read out through the ad hoc network, where it can be uploaded to storage. The stored information can be displayed at an incident commander work station in real time to give the incident commander a realistic view of the timeline and the severity of the incident, as well as the response. The use of the ad hoc network permits offloading stored information from each of the first responders' modules so as to free up storage within the modules. By providing storage at every node of the ad hoc network, one has access to a timeline of the actions at the incident as well as redundancy, which enhances the memories and observational skills of the first responders. Incident reporting is made complete due to the fact of all recordings being made available at one node on the temporary ad hoc network from which information reports and analysis can proceed, as well as subsequent training.

Device for establishing communications interoperability at an incident site including means for recording crisis incidents

A system for providing situational awareness outside a temporary incident area network includes a prioritized connection module for connecting a mesh network at the incident area to one of a plurality of available communications channels, with the selection based not only on the availability of a communications channel but also on the associated expense, speed, reliability or bandwidth, so that high bandwidth traffic such as video and pictures can be reliably sent from the incident area to a location outside of the incident area. In one embodiment switching to a satellite phone network bypasses problems with terrestrial networks such as cell phone networks and landlines which may be down.

Method and apparatus for persistent communications, interoperability and situational awareness in the aftermath of a disaster

Common handheld transceivers operating on different frequencies with differing protocols can be provided with a mini module attached to the handheld transceiver that not only converts the audio information available from the handheld to the format and frequency of the temporary incident area network (), the mini module also provides a sensor platform coupled to a wide variety of sensors whose data gathering capabilities in the vicinity of the individual are used to provide an incident commander or other individuals at nodes on the network with data to ascertain the conditions at the incident scene in the vicinity of the individual. Thus not only can information pertaining to the immediate health of and danger to emergency personnel be ascertained quickly, the transmission of sensor and image data over the same network provides situational awareness for the incident commanders and indeed for all those coupled to nodes on the network.

Techniques are disclosed for analyzing a wireless communications device. The techniques include, for instance, assessing vulnerability of the device, including its susceptibility to jamming, by applying one or more interfering signals to the device and observing the device's response. The techniques further include identifying one or more vulnerabilities that can be exploited in defeating malicious behavior involving use of the device (e.g., such as using the device for remote detonation of explosives). Applying one or more interfering signals to the device may include, for instance, applying a trigger signal and a jamming signal to the device, and adjusting the jamming signal until the trigger signal is rendered ineffective in acting as a trigger signal. Identifying one or more vulnerabilities that can be exploited in defeating malicious behavior may include, for instance, reporting parameters of the one or more interfering signals that result in defeating the malicious behavior.
