A computer-implemented method of populating row and column cells of an electronic financial statement document containing with formulas and data, and related apparatus. A formula for a cell in a financial statement is generated from a row definition for the row and a column definition for the column of the cell, where the row definition defines a term of the statement and the column definition specifies a period of time. The resulting statement is displayed to a user, and new formula expressions can be generated to reflect changes in the statement. The statement can have three kinds of columns, namely base columns, subtotal columns, and grand total columns. Data in columns of an input database corresponds to a database period of time, and the base columns in the statement have statement period unit. For each base column of the statement, a correspondence to more than one column of the input database can be computed dynamically. The cells of the statement column can be populated using data from the corresponding database columns. The cells can be repopulated in response to a change in the statement period unit.

Populating cells of an electronic financial statement

Methods and apparatus for modeling behavior. A computer model includes an agent having one or more beliefs, a world model, and facts. Behavior is modeled by frames including workframes modeling a time-consuming portions of an activity or thoughtframes modeling non-time-consuming portions of an activity or information processing. Detectables model acquisition of, and response to, information during a defined portion of an activity. A detectable tests facts to form beliefs of the agent, which can affect continued performance of the activity. The model is run by selecting for each time one of the frames to be the working frame; maintaining a context of active frames representing activities that are underway at any time; performing the working frame until it completes or another frame is selected to be performed in its place. Another frame may be selected when a detectable effect causes an impasse in the working frame or completes or aborts the working frame, or a higher-priority frame interrupts the working frame. In another aspect, the invention provides the services of an intelligent agent. An agent model models a user with a general component modeling an idealized agent having the role or tasks of the user and a situation-specific component describing the state and the beliefs of the user. The agent model is run under the control of a comparator process both in a forward-looking mode to generate predictions and in an explanatory mode to compare predictions generated by the agent model with actions of the user.

Simulating work behavior

A computer-implemented method of creating and editing a document containing one or more terms. A knowledge base containing a set of terms with one or more predefined properties including part-of properties relating terms to each other is provided. The one or more predefined properties associated with a user-selected term are identified. Constraints are imposed on user manipulation of the document with respect to the user-selected term in accordance with the one or more identified predefined properties associated with the user-selected term. In a particular implementation, a method of creating and editing a financial document containing one or more financial terms is described. The tasks of creating and editing documents are simplified by the separation of the presentation of information contained in a document from underlying representation of calculations and interrelationships. A user may readily manipulate the content and appearance of domain-specific (e.g., financial) analyses, without having repeatedly to define and verify calculations. A user may define and customize standard reports with a simple palette of powerful editing tools that implement and maintain the semantics of the items in a document. This frees the user from having to handle the underlying references directly, allowing the user to focus instead upon concepts and contexts contained within the document.

Creating and editing documents

A knowledge system has a consultation system and also encodes domain-dependent tutoring knowledge as a set of conditions for interrupting the operation of the consultation system in order to evaluate a subject system. During the evaluation, the subject system is probed for its understanding of the status of the consultation system, and its understanding is compared to the actual status to obtain a measure of the subject system's knowledge and performance relative to that of the consultation system. The direction of the probing and the source of information for instruction or diagnosis is based upon the condition causing the interruption of the consultation system. Preferably an authoring system scans the domain-dependent knowledge base of the consultation system and determines a set of possible interrupt conditions. From this set a user exercises judgment in selecting a subset of conditions that are appropriate for the subject domain and the needs of the student. The selected conditions and a selected test case dialog are stored in a case file, and a number of different case files may be stored in a case library. The authoring system preferably creates a file or index of tutorial knowledge which correlates the relevant domain knowledge with the interrupt conditions. The tutorial knowledge includes, for example, expressions for causing interrupts after their values are found, rules concluding the expressions, the values concluded by the rules, and the factors in the rules.

Knowledge based tutor

A tool is used for knowledge engineers for building and interpreting a knowledge base having separate portions encoding control knowledge, factual knowledge, and judgmental rules. The tool has an inference engine applying the judgmental rules according to a built-in control procedure defining discrete states or control steps during a consultation with a user. The control knowledge is encoded in an applicative and imperative language defining control actions to be executed during interruption of the built-in control procedure at specified control steps. Since the control knowledge is explicit and results in the modification of data only in a precisely defined fashion, the tool can be used to build knowledge systems that can always explain their conclusions and reasoning, and that are intelligible and modifiable. To provide transparent representation of control knowledge as well as factual knowledge, the knowledge base is preferably organized into distinct frames which include the rules; control blocks separately encoding the control knowledge; and classes which become instantiated, attributes which take on values describing the class instances, class types, legal value hierarchies, and user-defined functions, which all encode factual knowledge. The knowledge engineer may provide control blocks to be executed at the start of the consultation, after the instantiation of specified classes, when a value for a specified attribute is to be determined, after a specified attribute is determined, and upon explicit invocation by another control block. The tool can also implicitly determine subsumed attributes.
