A diverged beam optical transmitter is provided that includes a laser source configured to emit a light beam, and one or more lenses. The diverged beam optical transmitter also includes a diffuser placed between the laser source and the one or more lenses, and configured to increase an intrinsic divergence of the light beam and to fill some portion of the one or more lenses such that the light beam is eye safe after the one or more lenses.

Eye safe diverged beam optical wireless communications system

An optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan device includes an OCT scan device housing, an interferometer disposed within the OCT scan device housing and including a light source, a fiber optic coupler including an interferometer output, a reference-arm, and a sample-arm. The OCT scan device further includes a power source configured to provide power to the light source and the remaining components of the OCT scan device, and a controller disposed within the OCT scan device housing and configured to adjust lens focusing parameters in the reference-arm and the sample-arm, and control a scanning function of an optical beam emitting from the sample-arm. The OCT scan device is further configured to transmit and receive control instructions and transmit fundus image data.

Optical coherence tomography device and system

An optical receiver is provided for a diverged-beam, free space optical communications system. The optical receiver includes a demultiplexer and a detector array. The demultiplexer includes a diffractive optic configured to receive an optical beam propagating in free space. The optical beam includes a plurality of optical carrier signals of respective wavelengths for a plurality of communication channels, and the diffractive optic is configured to spatially separate the optical beam by wavelength into the plurality of optical carrier signals. The detector array includes a plurality of optical detectors configured to convert the plurality of optical carrier signals into a respective plurality of electrical signals for the plurality of communication channels. The plurality of optical detectors includes at least twice as many optical detectors as optical carrier signals in the plurality of optical carrier signals.

System for multi-channel, diverged-beam optical wireless communication

An optical communication system includes a base station and an extended reality immersion device (XRID). The base station includes an optical transmitter assembly configured to convert an electrical signal to an optical beam, and emit the optical beam in free space, uncollimated and with a divergence angle greater than 0.1 degrees. The XRID includes an optical receiver assembly having an acceptance angle greater than 0.1 degrees. The optical receiver is configured to detect the optical beam in free space, convert the optical beam to a corresponding electrical signal, and reproduce information carried by the corresponding electrical signal. The XRID also includes a head-up display configured to present the information.

System for optical wireless communication to extended reality immersion device

An optical receiver is provided that includes a detector array of multiple detector elements, and processing circuits coupled to the multiple detector elements. The detector array is configured to receive light from an external source, mix the light with light from a local oscillator to generate a spatial fringe across the detector array. The multiple detector elements are configured to convert respective portions of the spatial fringe incident on the multiple detector elements to corresponding electrical signals. The processing circuits are configured to process the electrical signals. This includes the processing circuits configured to sum those of the corresponding electrical signals from one or more of the multiple detectors, and subtract the sum from a second sum of those of the corresponding electrical signals from one or more other of the multiple detectors.

Coherent receiver for free space optical communications and lidar

A modular node for an optical communication network includes one or more transceiver modules of a plurality of transceiver modules, and a node core including a plurality of electrical connectors to electrically join up to the plurality of transceiver modules to the node core. At least some of the transceiver modules has an optical transceiver configured to emit optical beams carrying data and without artificial confinement, and detect optical beams emitted and without artificial confinement. The up to the plurality of transceiver modules electrically joined to the node core are spatially separated to provide configurable coverage for optical communication based on their number and placement. And the node core further includes switching circuitry configured to connect the one or more transceiver modules to implement a redistribution point or a communication endpoint in the optical communication network.

Optical coherence tomography imaging systems and methods are disclosed. According to an aspect, an optical coherence tomography imaging system includes a scanner configured to obtain images and to convert the images to electrical signals. The system also includes a computing device comprising an OCT module configured to receive the electrical signals, to apply an OCT imaging technique, and to generate imaging data.

Optical coherence tomography imaging systems and methods

Frequency domain optical coherence imaging systems have an optical source, an optical detector and an optical transmission path between the optical source and the optical detector. The optical transmission path between the optical source and the optical detector reduces an effective linewidth of the imaging system. The optical source may be a broadband source and the optical transmission path may include a periodic optical filter.

Optical coherence imaging systems having a reduced effective linewidth

A scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) for imaging the retina of an eye comprises a source () of collimated light, a scanning device (), a scan transfer device () and a detector (). The scan transfer device has a first focus () at which an apparent point source is provided and a second focus () at which an eye () may be accommodated. The scan transfer device transfers a two-dimensional collimated light scan from the apparent point source into the eye. An optical coherence tomography (OCT) system () is combined with the SLO, the OCT system providing OCT reference and sample beams. The OCT sample beam () propagates along the same optical path as of the SLO collimated light through the scan transfer device. An aberration compensator () automatically compensates for systematic aberrations and/or changes in wavefront introduced by scanning elements and the scan transfer device as a function of scan angle.

Ophthalmoscope

An apparatus is provided that includes a modulator and an optical transmitter coupled to the modulator and configured to emit an optical beam that the modulator is configured to modulate with data. The optical transmitter may thereby be configured to emit the optical beam carrying the data and without artificial confinement for receipt by an optical receiver configured to detect and recover the data from the optical beam. The optical transmitter may be configured to emit the optical beam with a divergence angle greater than 0.1 degrees, and with a photonic efficiency of less than 0.05%. The photonic efficiency may relate a number of photons of the optical beam detectable by the optical receiver, to a number of photons of the optical beam emitted by the optical transmitter.

Diverged-beam communications system

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for deep spectroscopic imaging of a biological sample. In an aspect, a system includes a broad bandwidth light source configured to generate an illumination beam, an interferometer, and a spectrometer. The interferometer includes a first beam splitter configured to split the illumination beam into an incident beam and a reference beam; an optical lens directs the incident beam onto a biological sample at a predefined offset from corresponding optical axis, and receive a beam scattered from the biological sample. The beams are configured to intersect with each other within a focal zone of the optical lens. Photons of the incident beam undergo multiple forward scattering within the biological sample. A second beam splitter configured to receive and superimpose the scattered and reference beams, to generate an interference beam. The spectrometer uses a spectral domain detection technique to assess tissue properties of the biological sample.
