A polycrystalline diamond drill bit for percussion drilling, in small hole high silica ground is disclosed which has a cutting face having an inner flat face and an outer beveled peripheral surface, a number of first polycrystalline diamond tipped inserts having a first diameter inserted into the inner flat face and the outer beveled peripheral surface, and a number of second polycrystalline diamond tipped inserts having a second diameter inserted into the inner flat face, with the second diameter being different than the first diameter. The cutting angle and the radius of the tip of each insert in addition to the diameter of the inserts, provide for use of a machine thrust pressure and machine torque pressure at low ranges when the PCD bits are used in percussion drilling. The percussion drilling, with larger bits, may be used for rotary oil drilling, and operating at a machine thrust and torque of less than 20 Bar.

A polycrystalline diamond drill bit for percussion drilling, in small holes in high silica ground. The bits are made having a bit body, and a series of insets locating in the bit body, and the bits are made using a double chisel design, or a modified double chisel design. The inserts are set into the bit body at very specific angles. The inserts have specific lengths to provide cut clearance for the bit body. The cutting angle the and radius on the tip of each insert in addition to the diameter of the inserts, provide a machine thrust pressure and machine torque pressure at low ranges when the PCD bits are used in percussion drilling.

The invention is embodied in a heavy duty drill bit for hard/soft rock drilling comprising a high fatigue-resistant, high alloy steel bit body having a PCD cutter member and an enlarged shank portion constructed to accommodate torsional forces at high thrust pressures, and reamer means for compensating the effect of bore hole rifling. The invention further involves the method of forming a roof bolting matrix in extremely hard rock formations having a compression strength up to about 50,000 psi using PCD wafers on a high tensile strength steel body coupled by a heavy duty shank through high fatigue-resistant reamer means to a high strength drive steel member.

The invention encompasses improvements in noise attenuation systems for reducing the audible noise level generated during earth boring operations using a hard surfaced rotary drill bit, and in dual bore-cutting elements for performing sequential first and second bore cutting to the design bore-gauge.

The invention is embodied in an earth boring tool comprising a bit body having a rotatable working head portion with a cutter element having a wear table of superhard material bonded to a substrate, and wherein the superhard and substrate materials have different coefficient properties creating a stress condition at their interface during bonding and wherein the cutter elements are stress relieved in situ on the bit body by low temperature heat annealing for a preselected time, and in which the cutter elements and bit body head portion are constructed and arranged for heat management in a dry, vacuum drilling operation.
