Disclosed is a curable filler composition which resists absorption into a porous substrate, particularly one derived from wood, comprising: (1) a liquid, ungelled binder of an unsaturated polyester resin having number average molecular weight of from 500 to 3,000 derived from an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, the unsaturated polyester resin having been reacted with a hydroxyl-containing amine selected from the group consisting of an alkanol amine having a secondary amino group, an alkanol amine having a primary amino group and a mixture thereof, (2) one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds different from and cocurable with the unsaturated polyester resin, (3) pigment, (4) a free radical initiator, and (5) optionally a carrier solvent for the filler composition. Disclosed is a method of minimizing absorption of a filler composition into a warm or hot porous substrate. Also disclosed is a porous substrate, particularly one derived from wood, having adhered to a surface thereof the cured filler composition.

A liquid, ungelled composition of matter composed of a graft copolymer prepared by the free radical initiated polymerization in an organic medium of a vinyl monomer component which contains at least 0.5 weight percent of an epoxy group containing vinyl monomer in the presence of an acid group containing polymer having an acid value greater than 10 mg KOH/g. One means of graft formation is the condensation reaction between the acid groups of the acid group containing polymer and the epoxy groups of the vinyl monomer component.

Esters of glycidyl polyethers of saturated phenols are especially useful in coating compositions having a low organic solvent content. Esters of imidazolidinedione-based triepoxides are especially useful in coating compositions having a low organic solvent content. The esters have the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R' are independently hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, one X is hydrogen, one Y is hydrogen, one Z is hydrogen and the other X, Y and Z are ##STR2## where the R' groups are independently hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 17 carbon atoms.

Resin mixtures of N,N'-dihydroxyalkyl ester substituted imidazolidinediones are especially useful in coating compositions having a low organic solvent content. The substituted imidazolidinediones have the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R' are independently hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, X is ##STR2## where the R' groups are independently hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 17 carbon atoms.

Hydroxy-functional esters of substituted imidazolidinediones have the formula: ##STR1## where X is hydrogen, ##STR2## provided both X's are not hydrogen, where R and R' are independently hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, with one Y being hydrogen, one Z being hydrogen and the other Y and Z being ##STR3## where the R' groups are independently hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 17 carbon atoms. The novel compounds are especially useful when formulated with a crosslinking agent and used in low organic solvent-containing coating compositions.

Amide modified saturated polyester polyols having an acid number of from about 0 to about 27, a hydroxyl number of from about 12 to about 360 and an amine number of from about 0.1 to about 6.5 are disclosed. The amide modified saturated polyester polyols are useful as part of a two-package urethane coating system.
