A device for preparing a control solution for ketone analysis is disclosed, as well as a method for preparing it. The device comprises a carrier vehicle incorporated with an ester of a .beta.-ketoalkanoic acid, and a hydrolyzing substance capable of converting the ester to the corresponding .beta.-ketoalkanoic acid. The ester has the structure ##STR1## in which R is a lower alkyl group and R' is an aliphatic or cyclic group having 1 to about 7 carbon atoms. The method comprises contacting a predetermined volume of solvent with the device.

A composition, test device, method of making a test device and process for determination of an analyte in a liquid sample are disclosed. More particularly, there is provided a composition for detecting an analyte in a liquid sample comprising an analyte-responsive component and an indicator composition having a plurality of components comprising at least one nonresponsive precursor component and at least one component effective in a liquid milieu to alter said precursor component so as to release at least one substance effective to permit said indicator composition, in combination with said analyte-responsive component, to produce a detectable response to said analyte. The composition can optionally be incorporated with a carrier to form a device.

Improved test compositions, devices and methods for the detecting of peroxidatively active substances are provided. The test compositions include an indicator capable of being oxidized in the presence of peroxidatively active substances to provide a color change, an oxidizing agent effective to oxidize said indicator, and a sensitizing agent. The sensitizing agent comprises a compound selected from the class of compounds of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl. Preferred compounds are benzimidazole and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole.

Improved test compositions, devices and methods for the detecting of peroxidatively active substances are provided. The test compositions include an indicator capable of being oxidized in the presence of peroxidatively active substances to provide a color change, an oxidizing agent effective to oxidize said indicator, and a sensitizing agent. The sensitizing agent comprises 10H-pyrido[3,2-b]-[1,4]benzothiazine.

Test means, such as a composition or device, method of making a test device and process for determination of at least one oxidizing substance, such as a peroxide, are disclosed. More particularly, the contemplated test means comprises a hydrazone and 8-amino-1-napthol-5,7-disulfonic acid (Chicago acid). The test system is highly sensitive to low levels of body fluid constituents to be detected, while also being highly resistant to interfering reducing substances, such as ascorbic acid, often present in body fluids.

Glucose indicator, test means and method for assaying glucose in fluids are disclosed. More specifically, a new indicator formulation comprising an enzyme system which includes a substance having glucose oxidase activity, a substance having perioxidative activity and a mixture of syringaldazine and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine are disclosed for indicating the presence of glucose in industrial and body fluids. The indicator formulation is nonmutagenic and can be used in conjunction with instrumentation designed to quantitatively measure whole blood glucose levels within the range of 10 to 400 milligrams (mg) per 100 milliliters (ml).
