A system for aggregating spaced related systems includes accessing service provider information for multiple service providers to determine relevant services/systems available, automatically determining that no single service provider provides services sufficient to perform a particular space activity, automatically identifying multiple services from different service providers that in aggregate include performing the space activity, and automatically determining a parameter to configure space equipment to perform each of the multiple services from the different service providers in order to perform the space activity. In some embodiments, this system can be scaled across multiple regions (e.g., multiple planetary regions). For example, each region can have its own set of servers and ledgers that provide real-time services within the region and opportunistically synchronize between regions (e.g., when communication is available).

Aggregated space system network

A scalable, extensible, multi-tenancy multi-mission configurable spacecraft system is provided that allows applications to be deployed and managed across many spacecraft. One embodiment includes a plurality of satellites in orbit, where each satellite includes an antenna, a memory configured to store a non-virtualized operating system and one or more software applications, and a processor connected to the antenna and the memory. The processor is configured to run the non-virtualized operating system and to run the one or more software applications. The processors and the applications can be managed by ground terminals or other satellites.

Multi-mission configurable spacecraft system

A satellite system that includes a gateway, a satellite, and a user terminal. The gateway determines a modulation scheme based on a function of uplink and downlink signal quality and a defined relationship between the downlink modulation to the uplink modulation. The satellite includes an input demodulator configured to apply an input modulation and coding (modcod) scheme; an output modulator configured to apply an output modcod scheme; and an output modcod scheme selector configured to select an output modcod scheme for the output modulator based on the input modcod scheme according a predetermined relationship between input modcod schemes and output modcod schemes. The user terminal providing the gateway a measure of downlink signal quality.

A satellite communication system comprises one or more non-geostationary satellites. Each satellite is configured to provide a plurality of spot beams. The polarizations of the spot beams are laid out on each satellite so that terminals have a constant polarization as the field of regard traverses the terminal location.

Described herein is a ground based subsystem for inclusion in an optical gateway and for use in transmitting an optical feeder uplink beam to a satellite. The subsystem can include a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) multiplexer configured to receive optical data signals from optical network(s) external to the ground based optical gateway, and configured to combine the optical data signals into a wavelength division multiplexed optical signal. The subsystem can also include an optical amplifier to amplify the wavelength division multiplexed optical signal, and transmitter optics to receive the amplified wavelength division multiplexed optical signal and transmit an optical feeder uplink beam to the satellite in dependence thereon. In certain embodiments, the ground based optical gateway does not perform any modulation or demodulation of the optical data signals received from the optical network(s) external to the ground based optical gateway before they are provided to the WDM multiplexer.

A satellite communication system includes a non-geostationary satellite configured to provide a first plurality of non-articulated spot beams that comprise a Field of Regard. The satellite further configured to provide a steerable spot beam that can be steered to establish communication with a gateway outside and in front of the Field of Regard and maintain communication while the satellite and the Field of Regard moves over and past the gateway including after the gateway is outside of and behind the Field of Regard.

Synchronization technology is implemented for a satellite communication system. Master clock information is accessed at a terrestrial location. A timing message based on the master clock information is transmitted from the terrestrial location to a satellite as the satellite is in orbit. The satellite is synchronized to the master clock based on the timing message. A beacon signal is transmitted from the satellite toward Earth. The beacon signal includes timing information. The beacon signal is received at a ground based gateway. The gateway is synchronized to the satellite based on the beacon signal. Communication is sent from the gateway to a terminal via the satellite. The communication includes timing data. The terminal is synchronized to the gateway based on the timing data.

A satellite communication system provides for handovers between satellites and multiple gateways. Terminals communicate with a first gateway via a first satellite as beams of the first satellite traverse the region. A second gateway is in communication with the first satellite and hands over to a second satellite. The first gateway is at a first location. The second gateway is at a second location separated from the first location in the orbital direction. Terminals handover to the second satellite as beams of the second satellite begin to traverse the region, and the terminals start connecting to and communicating with the second gateway via the second satellite. After all of the terminals of the plurality of terminals handover to the second satellite, the first gateway hands over to the second satellite and then the terminals in the region communicate with the first gateway via the second satellite.

A satellite communication system includes a satellite configured to provide a first plurality of spot beams adapted for communication with subscriber terminals using time domain beam hopping and a second plurality of spot beams adapted for communication with gateways. The satellite includes a spectrum routing network that is configured to time multiplex spot beams of the second plurality of spot beams with spot beams of the first plurality of spot beams so that a spot beam that is implementing beam hopping for communication to subscriber terminals communicates with different feeder beams (and, therefore, different gateways) at different times during a hopping period.

A communication platform such as a spacecraft, airborne platform, or terrestrial line of site wireless platform is provided with adaptive digital beamforming. The satellite digitizes a full spectrum allocation for digital channelization. A channelization engine can determine a particular user or user group associated with an uplink signal. In this manner, the communication platform can apply different processing based on the user or group associated with a signal. For example, the communication platform receives uplink signals associated with a first user group and a second user group in one embodiment. The platform dynamically generates one or more spot beams for the first user group and the second group. The platform discriminates the uplink signals to apply frequency hopping for the downlink frequency channel assignments to the second user group while the downlink frequency channel assignments for the first user group remain fixed.

A communication platform (e.g., a flexible satellite) includes electrical to optical converters configured to convert input electrical signals to input optical signals, an optical switching network connected to the electrical to optical converters that choose which input optical signals to route to which output beams, tunable optical filters (connected to the switching network) that are configured to select programmable sub-bands of the input optical signals to create output optical signals, and optical to electrical converters (connected to the tunable optical filters) that are configured to convert the output optical signals to output electrical signals for the output beams.

A satellite communication system comprises a satellite configured to provide a plurality of spot beams adapted for communication using time domain beam hopping to switch throughput among spot beams of the plurality of spot beams. The plurality of spot beams includes a first spot beam that illuminates and communicates with a first gateway and a first set of subscriber terminals. The satellite is configured to implement a beam hopping plan that during a hopping period provides throughput to the first spot beam for an aggregated time duration based on bandwidth assignments to the first gateway and the first set of subscriber terminals.

A satellite communications system provides for handovers between spot beams, including communicating (at a ground based terminal) with a non-geostationary satellite constellation using a first spot beam of the non-geostationary satellite constellation and a first beam hopping plan. The ground based terminal changes the communicating with the non-geostationary satellite constellation to use a second spot beam of the non-geostationary satellite constellation and a second beam hopping plan.

A non-geostationary satellite is configured to provide a plurality of spot beams that implement a first frequency plan at Earth's Equator and a second frequency plan away from Earth's Equator. The second frequency plan is different than the first frequency plan. In one embodiment, the non-geostationary satellite is part of a constellation of non-geostationary satellites, with each of the satellites providing spot beams that implement a first frequency plan at Earth's Equator and implement a second frequency plan away from Earth's Equator as the satellites travel in orbit around Earth.
