A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for synchronizing a database used by a client device with at least one server. A locally unique identifier is associated with each record in the database at the client. The locally unique identifier for a deleted record is changed to a selected value. This value is selected in a manner to indicate that a record has been deleted. This locally unique identifier may be a negative value and may be selected by multiplying the locally unique identifier by a negative one. The selected value is used in synchronizing the database and is used to track records deleted since a last synchronization of the database. In the depicted examples, this selected value is unique and allows for mapping back to the locally unique identifier for the record.

Method and apparatus for representing deleted data in a synchronizable database

A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for synchronizing a database utilized by a client device with a set of servers in which one server has the database. A change log is used with a client database for synchronizing the database. Dirty bits set in the client database are identified and a change log is modified based on the identified dirty bits. This change log is used to synchronize the database on the server with a client database on the client device.

Method and apparatus for real time creation and modification of a change log for multi-server synchronization

A method of enabling a Web browser user to interact with a given application running on a Web server begins by constructing and returning a cookie to the Web browser upon a given occurrence, e.g., user login to the application. Without additional user input, the routine then forces the Web browser to check with the Web server that the cookie was set on the Web browser. Preferably, this is accomplished by sending the cookie from the Web server in a refresh page that redirects the HTTP flow back to itself with a parameter to check if the cookie was set. At the Web server, a test is then done to determine whether the cookie is valid. If so, the user is allowed to interact with the given server application (e.g., to take a given action or to log off from the application without closing the Web browser). A novel cookie construction and validation mechanism is also described.

Dynamic use and validation of HTTP cookies for authentication

A method and architecture for the administration of large cells in an Open System Foundation/Distributed Computing Environment (OSF/DCE). The architecture organizes the Cell Directory Service (CDS) name space of the OSF/DCE to allow a network administrator to easily determine network resources under their control, and work with a subset of the network resources. The OSF/DCE name space is organized as resource realms having a CDS component and a registry component. The CDS component of the resource realms has a fixed portion containing at least two roots describing sub-systems and realm resources (e.g., printer, serial devices, etc.). The CDS component also contains individual realms defined directly below the fixed portions. The registry component has a root consisting of the security, group and realm portions. Individual realms are defined as directories below the root. The resulting resource manager which allows the OSF/DCE name space to be organized/partitioned into separate, administrable name spaces which allows easy determination as to what resources are controlled by the administrator, and easily administrable subsets of network resources.
