An electromagnet comprises a plurality of nested freestanding electrically insulating former layers, and electrically conductive wire wrapped around the outsides of the freestanding electrically insulating former layers to define a multilayer electrical coil in which adjacent layers of the multilayer electrical coil are spaced apart by intervening freestanding electrically insulating former layers. Electrically energizing the multilayer electrical coil generates a magnetic field inside the multilayer electrical coil. In some embodiments the electrically conductive wire is bare wire not having electrical insulation. In some embodiments the former layers comprise a ceramic material. In some such embodiments the electromagnet further comprises a ferromagnetic core disposed inside the multilayer electrical coil. An electric motor employing such an electromagnet as a stator pole is also disclosed. Control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) and coolant pump embodiments are also disclosed employing such a motor, for use in a nuclear reactor.

Environmentally robust electromagnets and electric motors employing same for use in nuclear reactors

A valve having a valve body having spaced inlet and outlet ports separated by an intermediate valve seat in open communication with the inlet and outlet ports includes a piston and a valve member being adapted to sealingly mate with the valve seat. A biasing member is positioned to bias the valve member toward the valve seat. A linear motor assembly attached to the valve body, the linear motor having a plurality of stator discs, a plurality of stator coils, a plurality of teeth defining a cylindrical opening, and a slider positioned within the cylindrical opening. The slider has a plurality of teeth defining a generally cylindrical outer periphery of the slider and is movable in response to magnetic flux generated by electrical current passing through one or more of the stator coils.

Linear motor valve

A method of making a wound field for a brushless direct current motor, direct current generator, alternating current motor or alternating current generator, includes providing a base mold and a press mold. Next, a number of phases is determined. At least one strand of conductive material per phase is formed between the base mold and press mold into a conductive coil that has a shape that indicates the number of poles required. Each conductive coil is inserted into the stator core, and the stator core is installed into one of a brushless direct current motor, direct current generator, alternating current motor or alternating current generator.

Method for winding brushless DC motors

A method of making a wound field for a brushless direct current motor, direct current generator, alternating current motor or alternating current generator, includes steps of providing a base mold and a press mold. Another step comprises determining a number of phases. At least one strand of conductive material per phase is formed between the base mold and press mold into a conductive coil that has a shape that indicates the number of poles required. Each conductive coil is inserted into the stator core, and the stator core is installed into one of a brushless direct current motor, direct current generator, alternating current motor or alternating current generator.

A method of making a wound field for a brushless direct current motor, direct current generator, alternating current motor or alternating current generator, includes providing a base mold having an engagement face with at least one movable end turn form. A number of distinct phases is determined and at least one strand of conductive material is wound around at least one movable end turn forming tool per distinct phase. One conductive coil is created from each strand of conductive material for each distinct phase. Each conductive coil is formed into a configuration that indicates the number of poles required. Each conductive coil is then placed onto an insertion instrument. The insertion instrument and each conductive coil are inserted into a stator core. The insertion instrument is removed from the stator core, and the stator core is installed into one of the aforementioned motors or generators.
