Light source for an inline sensor having one or more solid state UV emitters for emitting light at single wavelengths in the range of 240 to 400 nm. The light emitted by each of the emitters has a bandwidth on the order of 10-20 nm and is directed toward a measurement detector in the inline sensor. The UV emitters are enclosed in a housing which can be attached to the inline sensor, with a reference detector and a regulator for the UV emitters also within the housing, and an aperture through which the light passes from the emitters to the measurement detector. In some embodiments, air cooling is provided for the UV emitters.

Micro volume inline optical sensor comprising a flowcell having a sample chamber which has a volume less than 0.4 mL and increases in diameter from two ends toward the middle, a flow passageway intersecting the chamber where the diameter is the greatest, monitoring ports with optically transmissive windows at the ends of the chamber, mounting rings on opposite sides of the flowcell disposed coaxially of an optical axis that passes through the monitoring ports and the sample chamber, and a light source and an optical detector mounted on the mounting rings in alignment with each other along the optical axis. In one embodiment, the sample chamber has a side wall with oppositely inclined frusto-conical sections, and the ends of the chamber are closed and sealed by the monitoring port windows and O-ring gaskets that surround the open ends and are compressed between the body of the flowcell and the windows.

Inline optical sensor which includes a modular flowcell block with a flow passageway of predetermined diameter, interchangeable adapters for connecting flow lines with different internal diameters to the block, and an optical pathlength that can be adjusted both in fixed increments with window spacers and continuously with vernier adjusters, and a light source and an optical detector in modular housings which can be aligned both radially and axially. Thermal isolation is provided between the housings and the flowcell body, and air circulation further reduces temperature and condensation within the housings.

Manifold and probe assembly for use a bioprocessing vessel. The manifold has a chamber which communicates with the interior of the vessel and a plurality of ports which communicate with the chamber. Elongated sensing probes are threadedly connected to the ports with end portions of the probes extending into the chamber. Gaskets having generally annular bodies with conically inclined beveled faces are mounted on the end portions of the probes, with the beveled faces engaging conically inclined surfaces of seats in the ports and the gaskets being axially compressed and radially expanded into sealing engagement with the probes. The seating surfaces have inner and outer sections with different angles of inclination which produce greater radial expansion and tighter sealing with the probes. The probes are carried by adapter sleeves which are threadedly connected to the ports, with thrust washers between the distal ends of the sleeves and the gaskets for protecting the gaskets while the sleeves are being connected to the ports and the gaskets are being compressed. Stops limit the travel of the sleeves and control the degree to which the gaskets are compressed.

The electrode leads pass through a base cap to form contact pins for engagement with a socket. Apparatus for cleaning the interior surface of a window in an inline optical sensors which is subject to contamination and fouling by a product stream in contact therewith. The window surface is wiped by a blade driven by a pneumatic operator, and the amount of air supplied to the operator is adjusted to control the speed at which the blade moves across the window surface. When a cleaning operation is initiated, the blade is wiped across the window surface a predetermined number of times, and measurements utilizing data from the sensor are suspended until the cleaning operation is completed and the data has had time to restabilize.

The entire product stream is monitored continuously, and the actual content of the stream is compared with the desired content. A correction signal which varies in accordance with the difference between the actual content and the desired content is provided, and in one disclosed embodiment the content of the product is adjusted in response to the correction signal by an amount which decreases as the content approaches the desired level. In another disclosed embodiment, the butterfat content of both the standardized milk product and an excess cream output are controlled. The correction signals are adapted to control valves which control flow to result in both the standardized milk product and excess cream output having the desired butterfat content.
