An access node or access port has physical connectors for a variety of signal-receiving and -transmitting devices and includes apparatus that allow all signals used by the devices to be carried by as few as one or two conduits. The conduits can be any signal-carrying medium, including media converters where necessary. Signals are converted to and from addressed data packets carried in a packet stream over the conduits. A central node or node zero receives signals from outside the structure, converts them to addressed data packets, and sends the packets over the conduit(s) as the packet stream. Access nodes take packets addressed to them, convert packets back into the original signals, then feed the signals to appropriate connectors on the access nodes. The central node can also allow internode communication. In place of one of or in addition to the physical connectors, the node has a transceiver in wireless communication with another transceiver connected to a device outside the node using RF or infrared communication. The wireless communication between transceivers can carry the packet stream where one of the transceivers is in the central node. When one of the transceivers is connected to a device, such as a VCR, personal computer, or other signal-transmitting and/or -receiving device, the device can receive signals from the network without having cables extending between the access node and the device.

This hinged adjustable component holder for electronic component cabinets relies on a holster with adjustable brackets for holding a wide variety of types and sizes of gateway devices. The holster is provided with openings on all sides to allow heat venting by a wide variety of types and sizes of gateway devices. It is also hingably connected to the component cabinet in which it is mounted so that it can be easily and simply swung in and out for mounting, adjustment, and repair purposes. Further, the holster is provided with a spacing element connecting its hinge and its body so that ample space for connecting cables is left between the gateway device and the component cabinet. Finally, the holster is firmly held in position when swung into place in the component cabinet, but can be easily detached when opened by simply lifting it off of its hinges.

The conduits can be fiber optic cables, coaxial cables, twister pair wiring, radio frequency broadcasts, or any other signal-carrying medium. The signals are converted to and from addressed data packets carried in a packet stream over the conduits. If the conduits are fiber optic cables or other non-conductor media, a media converter is included. A central node or node zero receives signals from outside the structure and converts them to addressed data packets, then sends the data packets over the conduit(s) as the packet stream. The access nodes take packets addressed to them and convert the packets back into the original signals, then feed the signals to appropriate connectors on the access nodes. The central node can also take packets from the access nodes and convert them into signals for transmission externally of the structure to, for example, service providers. Additionally, the central node can send packets from one access node to other access nodes for internode communication, allowing computer networking, remote use of devices connected to the access nodes, and configuration of the central node from devices connected to the access nodes.

Single medium wiring scheme for multiple signal distribution in building

A wall plate for use with a standard electrical outlet includes an extended portion for mounting a modular telephone jack and a male terminal of a coaxial video cable. Integrally molded sockets projecting from a back surface of the plate are used to mount the telephone jack and video terminal. The sockets are positioned in the plate so that the plate may be inverted for locating the telephone jack and video terminal on either side of a standard electrical box. Means including a break-away seat for the video terminal and brackets molded integrally with the plate are used to protect the plate against breakage.
