Accurate, real-time formation fluids analysis can be accomplished using the systems and techniques described herein. A fluid analyzer includes a first mode of analysis, such as an optical analyzer, configured to determine a physical (optical) property of a fluid sample. The fluid analyzer also includes another mode of analysis, such as a composition analyzer, such as a gas chromatograph, configured to determine a component composition of the fluid sample. A data processor is configured to determine a quantity, such as a weight percentage, of a target component of the fluid sample in response results obtained from the first and second modes of analysis. Beneficially, the results are obtained at least in near real-time, allowing for interim results, such as results from the first analyzer to be used for one or more of tuning the compositional analyzer and for implementing quality control.

Real-time compositional analysis of hydrocarbon based fluid samples

Methods and related apparatuses and mixtures are described for chromatographic analysis. The described system includes a pressurized source of a mobile phase and a flow path in fluid communication with the pressurized source such that the mobile phase flows through the flow path. The system also includes an injector in fluid communication with the flow path and downstream of the pressurized source, the injector being configured to inject a sample into the flow path. A first column located downstream of the injector, contains a stationary phase, and forms part of the flow path. A first detector is positioned to detect properties of fluid in the flow path at a location downstream of the injector and upstream from the first column. A second detector is positioned to detect properties of fluid in the flow path at a location downstream of the first column.

Chromatography using multiple detectors

Methods and related systems are described for improving component separations in chromatography through novel techniques. The improvements in separation is due primarily to the provision of differential acceleration of the components being separated. Various systems and methods for providing differential acceleration are described including: increasing the cross section of the column towards the column outlet, changing the thickness or other composition of stationary phase within the column, and providing a temperature and/or mobile phase velocity gradient along the column.

Differential acceleration chromatography

A method and apparatus for two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC), including a valve having first and second positions (P, and P), and first through fourth sample flow paths (FP-FP). In P, a first gas sample is collected from a first dimension GC column via FP, a first pressure source and a first, second dimension GC column are connected via FP, a second pressure source and a second, second dimension GC column are connected via FP, and FPis disconnected. In P, the first sample in FPis introduced to the second, second dimension GC column via FP, with aid of the second pressure source, a second gas sample is collected from the first dimension GC column via FP, the first pressure source and the first, second dimension GC column via FPare connected, and FPis disconnected.

Apparatus and method for multi-dimensional gas chromatography

Methods for depositing a stationary phase in a tube for chromatography, in particular, as a variable gradient column are disclosed. The methods include providing a tube having a first end and a second end, the tube containing a fluid composition comprising a stationary phase precursor and a solvent, connecting the first end of the tube to a flow device, removing the solvent from a meniscus of the fluid composition, the solvent exiting the tube at the second end, and operating the flow device while removing the solvent such that the amount of the stationary phase precursor deposited within the tube changes as the meniscus retreats within the tube to deposit a stationary phase having a thickness gradient along the length of the interior of the tube.

Methods and apparatus for making a chromatography column

Methods for depositing a stationary phase in a tube for chromatography. The resulting column may be a variable gradient column or a standard open tubular column with a uniform thickness stationary phase. The methods include providing a tube comprising an electrically conductive interior surface and having a composition within the tube, the composition comprising a stationary phase precursor and at least one of an electrolyte and a reactant precursor, and electrochemically reacting the reactant precursor or the stationary phase precursor to form a stationary phase in the tube.

Methods for depositing a stationary phase in a tube for chromatography, in particular, as a variable gradient column are disclosed. The methods include providing a tube, loading the tube with a concentration gradient of a stationary phase precursor along its length, and removing the solvent such that the stationary phase precursor is deposited within the tube as a stationary phase to form a chromatography column. The concentration gradient is formed by combining at least a first fluid and a second fluid, with the first fluid containing the stationary phase precursor in a solvent.

The present invention generally recites a method, system and apparatus for fluid analysis and more specifically recites a method system and apparatus for multistage injection of a fluid to be analyzed into a fluid analysis instrument.
