An improved process for preparing epoxy acrylate dispersions from the reaction product of an epoxy resin and carboxyl containing polymer in the presence of tertiary amine in which the carboxyl containing polymer is formed, in situ, in the presence of a solvent solution of the epoxy resin and then subjected to the esterification reaction which can be conducted in a single pot.

Coating compositions comprising a combination of a minor amount of high MW resin of low functionality with a large proportion of monoethylenically unsaturated monomer having a relatively high Tg to provide a coating which, when cured, will possess a degree of hardness and flexibility enabling it to withstand severe fabrication and/or flexure stresses without film failure or loss of adhesion to the substrate. By controlling the molar ratio of unsaturated carbon bonds present in polyunsaturated molecules to those present in monounsaturated molecules, one is able to predict and control the physical performance and character of the cured coating.

Radiation curable coating vehicles, suitable for transfer coating application and strippable from a variety of carrying webs, can be produced by proper selection of coating ingredients and cured either by actinic radiation or electron beams. Potential crosslink density (as herein defined), glass transition temperature and the relative presence or absence of specific adhesion-promoting functional groups are controlled to arrive at a coating composition having the desired degree of adhesion to the substrate to be coated and the carrying web which is to transfer the coating composition to that substrate.

Ultraviolet curable aqueous emulsion coating compositions are provided in which the discontinuous phase of the emulsion is constituted by liquid droplets of ultraviolet curable polyethylenically unsaturated material (such as an epoxy polyacrylate dissolved in liquid monoacrylate monomer). These liquid droplets are stabilized in the emulsion by means of a polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene emulsifier which serves as a cosensitizer, especially when the photosensitizer is a phenyl ketone, such as benzophenone.

Ultraviolet curable aqueous coating solutions are provided in which an hydroxy functional ethylenically unsaturated material, such as hydroxy ethyl acrylate or a polyether or polyester thereof, is dissolved in water with the aid of an amine photoinitiator and a photosensitizer is incorporated in the composition, preferably by reacting the hydroxy functionality in the ethylenically unsaturated material with a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride including a proportion of benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride which provides the needed ultraviolet photosensitizer.

Ultraviolet curable aqueous coatings

A radiation curable coating composition for various substrates contains an adduct of acrylic acid and an epoxy resin (which may be modified with an anhydride, such as maleic anhydride), and a reactive acrylate monomer vehicle. The coating composition can be pigmented and can also contain additives commonly used in coatings, such as wetting agents and flow control agents. The coating composition does not require the usual hydrocarbon vehicles that give rise to air pollution problems. Surface gloss of a UV cured film obtained from a pigmented coating composition can be increased by using a photosensitizer combination of 2-chlorothioxanthone and a phenylketone, such as benzophenone. Adhesion of a cured coating is improved by replacing the tertiary amine co-sensitizer, at least in part, with dimethylaminoethyl acrylate.
