A method may comprise receiving and sampling a signal. The signal may encode a data packet. A slice may be generated and stored comprising a pair of values for each of a selected number of samples of the signal representing a correlation of the signal to reference functions in the receiver. The presence of the data packet may then be detected and the detected packet decoded from the stored slices. The generating and storing slices may be carried out as the received signal is sampled. The sampled values of the signal may be discarded as the slices are generated and stored. The slice representation of the signal can be manipulated to generate filters with flexible bandwidth and center frequency.

A system includes the headwear device and the detection arrangement. A method includes receiving the electrical signal generated by the ingestible event marker at the headwear device, decoding the electrical signal to extract information associated with the ingestible event marker, and transmitting the information to a wireless node.

A method may include receiving a signal. The signal may encode a data packet. The method may include further sampling the signal to generate sampled values, and generating a slice record comprising a plurality of slices from the sampled values by correlating the sampled values with first and second reference templates. The first reference template may include a first reference function, and the second reference template may include a second reference function in quadrature with the first reference function. The method may further include cross-correlating the slice record with a stored template to generate cross-correlation terms, and determining when a magnitude of the cross-correlation terms exceeds a predetermined threshold for a width of the stored template.

In a software receiver, a received electromagnetic signal is sampled in 'slices', each having a duration of some multiple of a reference frequency. The samples of each slice are correlated with values in a pair of reference signals, such as sine and cosine, at the reference frequency. This yields a two-tuple for each slice, which two-tuples may be stored. The stored two-tuples can be simply added to arrive at a correlation value of narrower bandwidth than that of any slice taken alone. The stored two-tuples can be taken in sequence, each rotated by some predetermined angle relative to its predecessor in sequence, and the rotated two-tuples summed to arrive at a correlation value with respect to a frequency that is offset from the reference frequency to an extent that relates to the predetermined angle. In this way, the receiver is able to proceed despite the transmitted frequency not being known exactly in advance and does not require prodigious storage or computational resources.

Methods and apparatus for delivering a plurality of different biological materials onto discrete locations on a receiving surface, as for example to fabricate an array of different biological materials. The apparatus and methods may include a plurality of orifices in an orifice member, at least six delivery chambers each in fluid conducting relationship with at least one of the orifices, a plurality of reservoirs each in fluid communication with at least one of the delivery chambers, means associated with each orifice for propelling fluid through the associated orifice from the delivery chamber that is in fluid conducting relationship with the orifice, and a vent for commonly venting at least two of the reservoirs. In some embodiments the chambers and reservoirs are loaded with fluids containing selected biomolecules by drawing the selected fluids into the chambers through the orifices; in other embodiments the fluids are introduced into the reservoirs. Also, methods for depositing biological materials onto a surface, as for example to fabricate a biomolecular array, employ the apparatus.

Method and multiple reservoir apparatus for fabrication of biomolecular arrays

An exchange switch for an optical switching network utilizes the manipulation of fluid to selectively exchange outputs for two optical transmission paths. That is, when the switch is in a signal-exchange state, first and second transmission paths reciprocally exchange optical signals that are received at input waveguides of the transmission paths. In one embodiment, the exchange switch includes an optical switching arrangement having first and second switching members. The first switching member is positioned to selectively interrupt the continuation of signal propagation along the first transmission path, while the second switching member is positioned to selectively interrupt the continuation of signal propagation along the second transmission path. When fluid resides within the chambers of the two switching members, the exchange switch is in a signal-continuation state. However, by evacuating fluid from the chambers, a signal propagating along one of the transmission paths will be reflected into an exchange waveguide that transfers the optical signal to the other transmission path. In other embodiments, the exchange switch includes at least one fluid-manipulable chamber and a steady-state reflector. The different elements cooperate to enable either signal continuation or signal exchange, depending on the states of the fluid-manipulable chambers.

A comparative conductivity detection system includes a sample channel assembly and a reference channel assembly. The sample channel assembly includes a sample-fluid channel, a drive electrode, and a detection electrode. The reference channel assembly includes a reference fluid channel, a drive electrode, and a detection electrode. The channels are formed as trenches in a planar substrate. Each electrode is capacitively coupled to its respective channel through a planar cover over the substrate. The drive electrodes are driven anti-synchronously (180&deg; out of phase), while the signals induced in the detection electrodes are summed. The summed detection signal indicates the comparative conductivity of the sample and reference fluids. The reference fluid can, for example, include non-sample components of the sample fluid so that artifacts due to the non-sample components are cancelled in the comparative conductivity detector output. Other applications use a reference fluid that is suspected to be a complete or partial match for the sample fluid. In that case, a high degree of cancellation can aid in identification of the sample components. The comparative contactless conductivity detector can be used with a wide variety of chemical separation techniques, including capillary zone electrophoresis and isotachophoresis.
