A reusable device for detachably mounting an object to a platform includes a breakaway plate that is mounted to the object and a mounting bracket that is fixed to the platform. The breakaway plate is formed with a circumferential groove, and an o-ring is placed in the groove. A tooth ring having a slight gap is positioned over the o-ring. As a retaining ring is placed over the o-ring and tooth ring and fastened to the mounting bracket, the tooth ring compresses, which causes the o-ring to compress and engage the tooth ring at a breakaway force of the object. When an applied force that is greater than the breakaway force is applied to the object, the o-ring pops out to separate the object and platform. The o-ring durometer is chosen according to the magnitude of breakaway force that is desired by the user.

Reusable breakaway mounting device

An underwater wireless network can include plurality of nodes, each node having a cylindrical housing, a repeater, a transducer and a buoy. The housing defines a void and encloses the repeater. The transducer can be tethered to the housing and a buoy can be tethered to said transducer. Each node also includes at least two hemi-cylindrical flukes that can be pivotably attached to the housing. The housing can further be formed with at least two flood ports, and corresponding plugs are inserted into a respective fill port. Lanyards interconnect each flukes with a respective plug. During transport, the flukes can surround the transducer and the void is empty, which renders the node neutrally buoyant for ease of transport. For deployment, the flukes are pivoted away from each other to tighten the lanyards, which pull the plugs out of the flood ports, to further flood the void and deploy the node.

The invention provides an automatic gain control system that is implemented by digital hardware. The digital hardware determines the range of a set of digital data values, and then examines each digital data value in a sequence. An index counter increments a sample count index i each time a new digital data value is examined and determines the absolute value of the i digital data value. The digital hardware also counts both the number j of digital data values that exceed a high percentage value of the range, and the number k of digital data values that are less than a low percentage value of the range as the digital hardware runs through the sequence. If the digital hardware determines that a digital data value is greater than the high percentage value, the ratio j/i exceeds a first threshold value, and the gain level is not set to the lowest gain level, then the gain is decreased. If the digital hardware determines that a digital data value is less than the low percentage value, the ratio k/i exceeds a second threshold value, a predetermined interval of time has elapsed, and the gain level is not set to the highest gain level, then the gain is increased.

Automatic gain control

A communications node includes a controller for 1) initializing a counter and resetting a FIFO buffer; 2) determining if a predetermined number of data packets have been transmitted; 3) transmitting the data packets after the FIFO buffer is partially filled if the number of data packets transmitted is less than the predetermined number, incrementing the counter, and returning to step (2); 4) directing a transceiver to be in a receive mode if the predetermined number of data packets have been transmitted; 5) determining if a command signal has been detected; 6) processing a backlink command if a command signal has been detected, and then directing the transceiver to be in transmit mode, clearing the counter, and returning to step(2); and 7) setting the receiver in a transmit mode if no command signal has been detected, and then clearing the counter and returning to step (2).

Digital data communications system

The present invention provides a system for determining the deployed length of a flexible tension element such as cable which is wrapped in a pack and fed through a funnel. The element may be sensed using different types of sensors such as optical, acoustical or magnetic sensors. A sensor is mounted in a funnel flush with the inside funnel surface. As wraps of the flexible tension element are deployed, or pulled off from the pack, individual wraps of the flexible tension element pass across the face of a detector as the flexible tension element is displaced in a generally circular pattern around the inside of the funnel. Signal processing circuitry produces a signal indicating the presence of the flexible tension element within a predetermined distance of the sensor. For example, when a wrap of the flexible tension element is within a predetermined range of the sensor, head a signal representing a first logic level, such as a logic 1, generally in the form of a pulse, is produced; when the flexible tension element is beyond a predetermined range of the sensor head, a signal representing a second logic level, such as a logic zero is produced. A computer counts the pulses and a software program implemented in the computer calculates information about the pack status, such as the deployed length of the flexible tension element. If signal pulses are missing, the software program interpolates between identified pulses to provide a count for the missing, or interpolated pulses. The total count of the missing pulses and detected pulses are correlated to the deployed length of the element.

System for determining the deployed length of a flexible tension element

The present invention provides a marker float release that includes a houg; an electromagnet mounted to the housing having an electromagnetic core; and a buoyant element having a permanent magnet. The buoyant element is positioned against the housing so that the permanent magnet is magnetically attracted to the electromagnetic core with sufficient force to hold the buoyant element adjacent to the housing when the housing and the buoyant element are submerged in water by inducing a magnetic field in the electromagnetic core. A flexible line having one end attached to the buoyant element and another end attached to the housing links the buoyant element to the housing. Magnetic field reversing means is operably coupled to the electromagnet for selectively reversing the magnetic field of the electromagnetic core, thereby permitting the buoyant element to be released from the housing.
