A process for converting or synthesizing hydrocarbons from carbon sulfides such as CS.sub.2 by catalytic hydrogenation over catalysts such ZSM-5 type zeolites.

Dialkyl disulfide waste, such as that formed in a caustic wash process for removing mercaptans from a hydrocarbon stream, is converted to hydrogen sulfide and valuable hydrocarbons by catalytic contact with a highly siliceous zeolite catalyst exemplified by ZSM-5. The hydrogen sulfide in turn is readily converted to marketable sulfur, thus alleviating the waste disposal problem.

A method is provided for synthesizing alkylnitriles and alkylaminonitriles by reacting formaldehyde, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 monohydric alcohol and a compound having the formula R.sub.1 R.sub.2 NH where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms under effective conditions in the presence of a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and recovering from the resulting reaction mixture, a product containing at least one of the above nitrile compounds.

Synthesis of alkyl and alkylaminonitriles

A method is provided for synthesizing pyridine or alkylpyridines by reacting ammonia and a carbonyl reactant which is an aldehyde containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, a ketone containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms or mixtures of said aldehydes and/or ketones under effective conditions in the presence of a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and recovering from the resulting reaction mixture, a product containing at least one compound of pyridine or an alkylpyridine. Addition of methanol and/or formaldehyde to the feed improves selectivity to unsubstituted pyridine.

Light gases rich in methane and ethane are produced from synthesis gas by contacting a CO reducing component of molybdena alone or in combination with an element selected from the group consisting of cobalt and vanadium distributed on a support of alumina or silica/alumina. The presence of hydrogen sulfide in the syngas feed enhances the activity and selectivity for the catalysts to produce ethane rich light gases.

Methanation of synthesis gas

Synthesis gas is contacted with an intimate mixture of a carbon monoxide hydrogen reduction catalyst, comprising a methanol synthesis catalyst in combination with a selective class of acidic crystalline aluminosilicate having a silica/alumina ratio greater than 12, a pore dimension greater than about 5 Angstroms to produce hydrocarbon mixtures useful in the manufacture of heating fuels, gasoline, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chemicals intermediates.

Contacting a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen with an intimate mixture of a carbon monoxide reduction catalyst, such as a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst or a methanol synthesis catalyst, and an acidic crystalline aluminosilicate having a pore dimension greater than about 5 Angstroms to produce hydrocarbon mixtures useful in the manufacture of heating fuels, high octane gasoline, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chemicals intermediates.
