The incorporation of oxazoline monomers into conventional latexes imparts resistance to flash rust and salt fog of industrial coatings which contain the oxazoline latex.

Latex containing oxazoline for industrial coatings

Cast ceiling tile requires a particular rheology of its wet formulation for the dried tile to have a desired aesthetic appearance. The use of a latex binder rather than starch for cast ceiling tiles imparts the necessary rheological properties to the wet ceiling tile formulation. The tile is prepared by blending mineral wool with a premixture of water, latex, and filler, said premixture having a sharp yield point when measured with a recording Brookfield Viscometer. The latex is an alkali-swellable latex comprising (i) a C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer in an amount from about 15 to about 60 weight percent based on the weight of the monomers in the cpolymers; (ii) at least one of a copolymerizable nonionic vinyl monomer in an amount from about 45 to about 30 weight percent based on the weight of the monomers in the copolymer and (iii) an additional late feed of nonionic vinyl monomer in an amount from about 10 to about 40 weight percent based on the weight of the monomers in the copolymer.

Cast ceiling tiles containing latexes as binders

Polymeric latexes with a relatively high T.sub.g such as: styrene, butadiene and acrylic acid; or methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and fumaric acid can be used in whole or in part as a binder to produce strong composite board that will not sag substantially under conditions of high temperature and humidity.

Latexes as binders for cast ceiling tiles

Substantially solid state thermoplastic thermal radiation suppressor composition for suppressing thermal radiation transmission comprise a thermoplastic substance (e.g., a polymer of polymerized styrene, methyl methacrylate and 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) in intimate contact with a composition (e.g., a polymer of polymerized ethylene and acrylic acid) which exhibits a refractive index essentially equal to that of said thermoplastic substance at one temperature but a refractive index different from that of said thermoplastic substance at another temperature. The thermal radiation suppressor compositions exhibit good physical properties and can be employed in the form of thermoplastic sheets or films. The compositions are useful as devices in greenhouses, skylights, etc.

Solid state thermosensitive polymer compositions

Copolymers comprising 0.10 to 50 parts by weight of hindered phenol antioxidant monomer and at least 10 to 60 parts by weight of at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer are prepared, preferably in emulsion polymerization systems.

Copolymers containing high concentrations of phenol antioxidant units

An oxidation resistant thickening composition of matter comprising a liquid emulsion copolymer comprising about 0.10 to 50 parts by weight of at least one antioxidant monomer and at least 20 parts by weight of at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer is prepared and used.

Antioxidant thickening compositions

A pressure-sensitive adhesive having non-ghosting characteristic comprising a latex of polymers having pendent oxazoline groups, coreactive groups and a tackifier. The latex comprises discrete polymer particles having both pendent oxazoline and coreactive groups or a blend of discrete polymer particles one portion of which has pendent oxazoline groups and the other portion of which has pendent coreactive groups. The oxazoline group is preferably 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline and the coreactive group is a carboxyl, sulfonic acid, anhydride, phenolic, hydroxyl, amide or amine group.

Non-ghosting pressure sensitive adhesives

Methods of rendering water-soluble dyes insoluble comprise contacting a polymer containing X-alkyl-2-oxazolidinone with the desired dye or dyes. The essentially water-insoluble pigments so prepared are useful in a wide variety of uses and, in particular, in coloring soaps, toothpaste, etc.

Latexes containing particles having pendant coreactive groups and oxazoline groups are disclosed. Said latexes are self-curing yielding films and other articles having excellent tensile strength and resistance to water and other solvents. In addition, a process for making such latexes is disclosed.

Latexes of polymers having pendant coreactive and oxazoline groups

Self-curable latex compositions contain particles of an oxazoline-modified polymer and particles of a coreactive polymer. These latex compositions are curable, yielding films and other articles having good tensile and elongation properties and excellent resistance to water and aqueous fluids. In addition, these latex compositions are self-curing at room temperature.

Self-curable latex compositions

Substantially oil-free aqueous industrial fluids possess superior lubricating and wear preventing characteristics and are useful as hydraulic fluids and metalworking compositions. Fluids of the invention comprise (1) an aqueous liquid and (2) a water-soluble synthetic addition copolymer of (a) an ethylenically unsaturated polyalkyleneoxy containing monomer, (b) an ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble monomer and, optionally, (c) an ethylenically unsaturated water-insoluble monomer. The industrial fluids exhibit good Newtonian behavior and mechanical stability at higher shear.

Water-based hydraulic fluids

A latex is prepared by polymerizing (a) an addition polymerizable oxazoline (such as 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) and (b) at least one other monomer (such as a mixture of styrene and butadiene). The latexes of this invention are useful for promoting adhesion between a polymeric elastomer and a substrate, especially for promoting adhesion between tire cords and tire rubber.
