The present invention provides monopolar acetabular liners () that can enclose a femoral head () to form a hip replacement prosthesis (), wherein the liner () has a rim () that creates an orifice, wherein the orifice has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head (), and wherein the liner () encompasses greater than 50 percent of the volume of the head (), wherein a constraining ring () can be used in conjunction with the monopolar constrained acetabular liner () to provide additional support for the femoral head () to stay with the acetabular liner () and avoid dislocation. Assemblies and complete prosthetic replacements are also provided. Liners () and constraining rings () having no, one or more recesses () also are provided.

A medical prosthesis for use within the body which is formed of radiation treated ultra high molecular weight polyethylene having substantially no detectable free radicals, is described. Preferred prostheses exhibit reduced production of particles from the prosthesis during wear of the prosthesis, and are substantially oxidation resistant. Methods of manufacture of such devices and material used therein are also provided.

The present invention provides a portable dental system for use in areas having inadequate sources of power, either for human or for veterinary dentistry. The system provides one or more handpieces, each driven driven by a pressurized nitrogen gas contained in a portable tank. A water reservoir is also provided for medicated water to be applied to the tooth site. The system has two channels to which either a conventional dental handpiece or an abrasive handpiece can be attached. When two abrasive handpieces are attached, two different abrasive materials may be used by the system, one material for cleaning and one material for cutting or abrading.

A diaphragm for minimizing interfacial porosity during the insertion of a femoral component into the cavity in the medullary canal of a femur. By providing a seal around the outer medial, lateral, anterior and posterior surfaces of the component during insertion through the diaphragm, the introduction of pores into the cement during the insertion process is minimized and flow of cement out of the cavity is resisted. The diaphragm may be formed of at least one rigid layer and a resilient layer, the resilient layer providing the desired seal. In another embodiment, the diaphragm may be formed of two stacked discs which permit expansion in two orthogonal directions and which have holes which include seals on the inner surface thereof to provide a seal between the diaphragm and the outer surfaces of the component. In the method of the present invention, a diaphragm is placed over the opening of the cavity to resist the flow of cement out of the cavity to pressurize the cement during insertion of the component, as well as to provide a seal between the diaphragm and the component to resist the introduction of air into the cement. After insertion, the diaphragm is cut or otherwise separated to allow removal thereof.

Method and apparatus for reducing interfacial porosity in a cemented

A drill alignment apparatus for a drill adapted for osteoplastic surgery comprises an alignment rod mounted thereto and a clamp element. The alignment rod is parallel to and disposed a predetermined distance (D) from a shaft of the drill. The clamp element includes an aperture which permits passage of the rod. The clamp element is adapted to be affixed to a bone, such as a femur, so that the aperture is displaced from the central axis of the bone by substantially the same distance which the center axis of the alignment rod is displaced from the center axis of the drill shaft. When drilling is commenced, the forward end of the alignment rod is placed within the aperture of the clamp element. As drilling progresses, the rod passes through the aperture, thereby ensuring that drilling occurs along a predetermined drilling path extending along the bone axis.
