A mechanism and method for accumulating sheet stacks from a continuous web having sheets printed both in side-by-side relationship and with the sheets behind each other. Slitting the continuous web lengthwise between said side-by-side sheet and cutting the web transversely between the sheets behind each other sheets to separate the printed sheets. Accumulating the printed sheets into separate stacks and stacking the separate stacks one on top of the other in offset relationship to each other and moving the offset stacks into a receptacle, such as a cassette.

Sheet feeding

The sheets which are outputted from a printing device are stacked in an exchangeable cassette mounted on an input unit in successive order as they are printed. An identifying label on the cassette is read by a reader and stored in a central controller. An address of each document, and preferably of each page of each document, is stored in the controller in successive order and associated with the label signal as the documents are stacked. An output unit for picking up the individual documents is associated with a finishing machine. A full cassette is introduced into the output unit. A second reader on the output unit reads the label on the cassette that has been placed into the output unit. The second sensor is connected to the controller. The finishing machine is controlled by the controller in response to the label signal and the address signals of the documents.

Method of sorting printed documents and feeding them to a finishing machine

A multibin feeder having a plurality of bins. A stack of sheets in the bins. Each sheet having data thereon. A mechanism for storing predetermined data. Each sheet is fed from the bins. Reading means are provided to read the data on each sheet before the sheet is fed. The data read on said sheet is compared to the predetermined data. Mechanism is provided to prevent the sheets from moving to the next station if the data read by the reading mechanism does not match the predetermined data.

Multibin feeder

A two-way conveyor having an accumulating station for accumulating a plurality of sheets. A mechanism for determining in which direction the sheets are to be moved is also provided as well as a mechanism for moving the sheets in one direction or the other. A thickness detecting mechanism is also provided to determine the thickness of the stack and the stack is moved in one direction or the other depending on its thickness. Gates are provided for preventing the movement of the stack in either direction which comprises gates at the forward and rearward edge of the stack and a closing mechanism is provided for closing the gate to prevent movement of the stack in either direction. Gate opening mechanisms are provided for opening one of said gates to permit movement of the stack in the desired direction. The gates are preferably pivotal gates located at the forward and rearward portions of the stack.

Two-way conveyor

Mechanism for assembling a document from a plurality of predetermined sheets having a central controller, with a plurality of modules. The sheets are moved past each of said modules. One of said modules is a feed module which feeds the sheets. The feeder module has reader means for reading each sheet before it is fed and being positioned adjacent the sheet feeder so that it reads the lower-most sheet in the feeder. A module is also provided for assembling the sheets together. Means are also provided responsive to the central controller which stop the operation of the mechanism should the sheet read by the reader be the improper sheet for the document being assembled.

Electronic publishing system

A deckle-edge-simulating apparatus generally comprising a conveyor system for transporting a web of paper through the apparatus, and a novel deckle-edge-simulating assembly operatively associated with the conveyor system. The deckle-edge-simulating assembly generally includes a configured transport roller or anvil in association with a deckling fixture. The anvil is disposed beneath the web of paper, and includes one or more circumferential grooves in its surface. The deckling fixture includes a blunt-edged blade extending from and between a pair of nip forming rollers disposed on either side of the blade, and into one of the grooves of an anvil. As the web of paper passes across the anvil, the blunt-edged blade operates to burst the fibers of the paper to create a simulated deckled edge. The nip forming rollers serve to firmly hold the web of paper in position during this deckling procedure.

Apparatus for producing paper with decorative edges

A mechanism for feeding sheets deposited in a container which has side walls, end walls and a bottom moveably mounted within the container on which the said sheets are deposited. An exit mouth is provided in one of the walls. The moveable bottom has slots therein and the container is provided with a flange to support the moveable bottom within the container. The container is mounted over an elevator so that the moveable bottom rests on the elevator in a raised position. The elevator and the moveable bottom which rests on it is lowered as sheets are added to the moveable bottom when the moveable bottom is lowered to the point where it rests on the support means. Feed wheels protrude through the slots in the moveable bottom and contact the lowermost sheet on the moveable bottom to move it out of the exit mouth.

Sheet loading and unloading mechanism

A mechanism for automatically feeding individual pre-cut sheets and stuffing a personalized letter or some other pre-cut insert into a personalized envelope. The mechanism has means to permit additional inserts to be automatically added to the envelope and to automatically seal the contents within the envelope. The mechanism will also combine pre-cut inserts and envelopes fed from different sources and form them into a completed mailing envelope.

Mechanism for folding an envelope around an insert

A mechanism in which a personalized letter assembly is printed with a name and a personalized insert assembly is printed with the same name and the two are united into an envelope and in which the insert may be either a personalized letter or a personalized card.

Mechanism for forming personalized envelopes and inserts
