An energy storage system, for a hybrid vehicle including an internal combustion engine having an output shaft and a transmission operably coupled to the output shaft, includes a reservoir containing working fluid, a reversible pump/motor in fluid communication with the reservoir, a first clutch selectively drivably coupling the output shaft of the engine and the reversible pump/motor, a second clutch selectively drivably coupling an output shaft of the transmission and the reversible pump/motor, and an accumulator containing working fluid and gas. The accumulator is in fluid communication with the reversible pump/motor to deliver pressurized working fluid to the reversible pump/motor when operating as a motor to drive one of the respective output shafts of the engine and the transmission, and to receive pressurized working fluid discharged by the reversible pump/motor when operating as a pump driven by the one of the respective output shafts of the engine and the transmission.

An energy storage system for a hybrid vehicle, including an internal combustion engine having an output shaft and a transmission operably coupled to the output shaft, includes a reservoir containing working fluid, a first reversible pump/motor in fluid communication with the reservoir and selectively drivably coupled to the output shaft of the engine, a second reversible pump/motor in fluid communication with the reservoir and selectively drivably coupled to an output shaft of the transmission, and an accumulator containing working fluid and gas. The accumulator is in selective fluid communication with at least one of the first and second reversible pump/motors to deliver pressurized working fluid to the one of the first and second reversible pump/motors when operating as a motor, and to receive pressurized working fluid discharged by the one of the first and second reversible pump/motors when operating as a pump.

Systems and methods for mitigating failure mode effects in a steer-by-wire system. The system includes a controller configured to alter a direction of the vehicle when the controller is in a failure mode. A steering device is coupled to a detector. The detector is configured to detect a steering input from a driver and output a signal representative of the steering input. A first actuator is coupled to a first control device. The first control device is configured to generate a first control signal representative of the steering input when the controller is in the failure mode. The first actuator alters the direction of the vehicle by removing energy from the vehicle. A second actuator is coupled to a second control device. The second control device is configured to generate a second control signal representative of the steering input when the controller is in the failure mode. The second actuator alters the direction of the vehicle by adding energy to the vehicle.

A fail-safe torque transducer, and automotive power steering system, utilizing a two-stage series coupled torsion bar system. A first stage torsion bar provides tuning of the steering system, and by reducing its diameter relative to the second stage, provides a lower torsional spring rate and higher operational stress level than that of the second stage. The second stage torsion bar provides the stress/strain indicia referenced by a torque-measuring device, and is stressed at a lower level than the first stage and therefore has a higher cycle life than that of the first stage bar. Hence, if stress related failure ever occurs, it will only occur in the first stage torsion bar, thereby preventing any torque from reaching the second stage, thereby causing a zero strain signal and thus rendering the system fail-safe and not subject to instability of vehicle steering if the torsion bar breaks.

An electric-hydrostatic actuator ( or ) includes an electric motor ( or ) responsive to motor control signals for providing an output to a motor shaft ( or ), one or more pistons ( or ) coupled to the shaft, and one or more hydraulic housings ( or ) mounted on the motor and cooperating with the pistons for providing a pair of fluid cylinders ( or ) respectively coupled to the fluid chambers at the hydraulic actuator. A solenoid valve ( ) is connected between the cylinders, and is responsive to valve control signals for feeding fluid between the actuator chambers and thereby short circuiting the hydrostatic actuator cylinders. A pair of pressure sensors ( ) are coupled to the actuator chambers for providing respective pressure signals as a function of fluid pressure at the chambers, and a controller ( or ) is responsive to the pressure signals for providing the valve and motor control signals.

Precision electro-hydraulic actuator positioning system

An electro-hydraulic power steering system comprising an elongated vehicle steering linkage rack with a rotatable steering gear in mesh with rack teeth and extending within an elongated power assist cylinder of a rack housing. A rack piston separates the power assist cylinder into first and second power assist working chambers filled with hydraulic fluid. An electric/hydrostatic steering assist module includes a hydraulic actuator cylinder with a linear drive screw extending lengthwise therein and journalled for bi-directional rotation and against axial displacement. An actuator piston is reciprocable but non-rotatable within the actuator cylinder and separates it into first and second hydraulic fluid filled actuating chambers. The drive screw is threadedly engaged with the actuator piston to produce bi-directional linear movement thereof as rotationally bi-directionally driven by a servo motor carried on the module. First and second fluid lines respectively communicate the first and second actuating chambers with the first and second power assist chambers such that the hydraulic fluid filling said actuating chambers is force fed to and from said first and second power assist chambers in response to motion of said actuator piston under control of the motor and drive screw. A fluid cross-over by-pass line connects the first and second fluid lines and contains a solenoid by-pass valve that when opened allows fluid to be merely displaced between the power assist chambers in by-pass relation to said actuator chambers. When the vehicle operator provides a steering input to the rack, the resultant motion of said rack and consequent motion of the rack piston creates a pressure differential in the rack power assist chambers which is sensed by two pressure sensors coupled one in each fluid line to thereby generate a corresponding pressure differential signal. An electronic controller utilizes the pressure differential signal to control the servo motor and thereby cause rotation of the drive screw to move the actuator piston in a proper direction to force sufficient hydraulic fluid from one of the actuator chambers into an associated one of the power assist chambers to thereby minimize the fluid pressure differential existing between said two pressure sensors and thus provide steering assist power in the power cylinder to assist the vehicle operator in manually applying torque via the steering wheel to achieve the desired motion of the rack to thereby move the steerable vehicle wheels.
