A polymer foam system comprises a polyaldehyde, an inorganic powder, a polycarbamate, a blowing agent and an acid catalyst wherein the polyaldehyde is in an A-side of the polymer foam system and the polycarbamate is in a B-side of the polymer foam system wherein the inorganic powder is selected from a group consisting of Group II oxides and hydroxides, the polyaldehyde has an average functionality of more than one and three or less, the polycarbamate has an average functionality of 3.4 or more and 4.2 or less, the polycarbamate has an average equivalent weight of 200 grams per equivalent or more and 325 grams per equivalent or less, and the average particle size of the inorganic powder in micrometers divided by the ratio of concentration in millimoles of inorganic powder to acid catalyst is 2.5 or more an 9.3 or less.

System for dimensionally stable isocyanate-free polyurethane foam

An article contains a polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam having a primary surface, an aluminum facer covering, and a primer layer between and attached to the primary surface of the foam and the aluminum facer; wherein the article is characterized by: (a) the primer layer having a concentration of bromine in said primer layer, comprising a primer component and a brominated component, where the primer component and brominated component are the same or different components; (b) the primer layer is free of chlorinated components; and (c) an absence of fibers in the form of fiber mats, fiber fabrics and dispersed fibers between the polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam and the facer. Such an article shows performance in a fire test equivalent to or better than a laminate article where the bromine is dispersed in the polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam, at lower total bromine content.

Conjugated diene polymers such as a styrene-butadiene copolymer are sequentially brominated by reaction with a quaternary ammonium tribromide or quaternary phosphonium tribromide and halohydrated by reaction with an N-haloimide compound. This produces a brominated and halohydrated polymer with very good thermal stability. The product is useful as a flame retardant in a variety of polymer systems.

Method for producing brominated and halohydrated polymers

Brominated styrene-butadiene copolymers are recovered from solution in an organic solvent. The copolymer solution is mixed with a liquid non-solvent in the presence of a suspension stabilizer to form a dispersion. The dispersion is heated to vaporize the organic solvent. This process produces precipitated copolymer particles having useful particle sizes, which can be easily used in downstream applications.

Process for recovering brominated styrene-butadiene copolymer from an organic solvent

Aliphatic bromine-containing polymers are stabilized using a mixture of an alkyl phosphite and an epoxy compound. This stabilizer package is very effective at preventing cross-linking reactions from occurring when the aliphatic bromine-containing polymer is subjected to high temperatures as are seen in melt processing operations. The stabilized aliphatic bromine-containing polymer is useful as a flame retardant for other polymers, notably polystyrene foam.

Extruded polystyrene foams are made with an added brominated styrene-butadiene polymer as a flame retardant. The blowing agent is a mixture of carbon dioxide, ethanol and water, which may also contain a C-Chydrocarbon. The blowing agent mixture overcomes a tendency of the brominated styrene-butadiene to form very small cells. This allows the foam to expand fully to form good quality, low density extruded foam.

Disclosed herein are polyisocyanurate and/or polyurethane foams containing non-porous silica particles derived from mesoporous cellular foams, wherein the polyisocyanurate and/or polyurethane foams have enhanced heat and/or fire resistance. Processes for making such foams and methods of using them are also disclosed.

Brominated styrene-butadiene copolymers are useful gas transport films. The gas transport films are made by brominating a starting styrene-butadiene copolymer, and then forming the brominated styrene-butadiene copolymer into a film. The film may contain a blend of the brominated styrene-butadiene copolymer with one or more other polymers. The films have excellent selectivities between certain pairs of gasses, and exhibit high gas transport rates for various gasses such as carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Extruded polymer foams are prepared using brominated fatty acids, an ester, amide or ester-amide of a brominated fatty acid, a glyceride of one or more brominated fatty acids, or a polymerized brominated fatty acid as an FR additive. The brominated FR additives unexpectedly are stable at the extrusion temperatures, and provide excellent flame retardancy to the foams.

A polybutadiene brominating method uses a quaternary ammonium tribromide as the brominating agent. The brominating is performed in solution, and dual extractions recover the spent brominating agent and recombine it with fresh bromine to regenerate an active tribromide. Solvent and aqueous extraction streams can be purified and recycled as needed.

Certain brominated polymers compounds are effective FR additives for combustible organic polymers. These FR additives include: i) a copolymer having styrene and 2,3-dibromopropylmaleimide repeating units; ii) a brominated polyester having aliphatically bound bromine; iii) an allyl ether of a ring-brominated novolac resin; iv) a 3-bromo-2-hydroxypropyl ether of a novolac resin; v) a 2,3-dibromopropyl ether of a cresol novolac resin; and vi) a brominated ROMP polymer or copolymer.

Phosphorus-sulfur compounds have flame retardant activity in organic polymer systems. The phosphorus-sulfur compounds can be represented by the structure: wherein X is oxygen or sulfur, T is a covalent bond, oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen, provided that at least one of X and T is sulfur, each X' is independently oxygen or sulfur, each m is independently zero or 1 when X&#x2032; is oxygen and zero, 1 or 2 when X&#x2032; is sulfur, n is at least 1 and preferably at least 2, each R is independently an unsubstituted or inertly substituted hydrocarbyl group or the R groups together form an unsubstituted or inertly substituted divalent organic group and A is an organic linking group.
