A needle tip shielding mechanism is described herein. The shielding mechanism comprises an outer housing, an inner housing, and a needle having a needle feature. Generally, the outer housing comprises at least one adapter-interlock feature. Moreover, the inner housing comprises a needle-feature capture mechanism, such as a washer feature, and a needle-tip capture mechanism, such as duckbilled tip barrier. In some cases, the inner housing is slidably moveable within the outer housing. In such cases, the inner housing is movable between a first position that biases the adapter-interlock feature into an engaged position and a second position that allows the adapter-interlock feature to move to an unengaged position. This ability to bias the interlock feature in the engaged position and to allow the interlock feature to move to the unengaged position allows the shielding mechanism to be selectively coupled to and released from an interlock-feature mating component within a catheter adapter.

An IV catheter includes a catheter having a wall defining a lumen, a proximal end, and a distal end. An adapter has a proximal end, a distal end and an internal cavity. The adapter is in fluid communication with the catheter lumen. A septum is positioned within the adapter cavity at the adapter proximal end. An extension tube extends laterally from the adapter and is in fluid communication with adapter cavity. A tip shield has a distal end, a proximal end and an internal cavity. The tip shield is positioned adjacent adapter proximal end and coaxially aligned with adapter. A hub has a proximal portion, a distal portion and an internal cavity. The hub is positioned adjacent the tip shield proximal end and is aligned coaxially with the tip shield. A cannula has a wall defining a lumen, a beveled distal end, an aperture in the wall of said cannula near the cannula distal end and a proximal end in the shape of a hook. The cannula passes through and is coaxially aligned with the catheter, adapter, tip shield and hub.

Method of forming IV catheter and needle assembly

Needle capture mechanisms and arrangements are provided. One such arrangement includes a needle defining a longitudinal needle axis having a sharp distal tip, a shank portion, and a needle feature defining at least one localized area along the shank of increased outer diameter; a needle shield; and a biasing member adapted to exert a generally downward biasing force upon the needle. Another such arrangement includes a needle defining a longitudinal needle axis having a sharp distal tip, a shank portion, and a needle feature defining at least one localized area along the shank of increased outer diameter; a needle shield, the needle shield comprising a pocket formed therein having an inclined surface; a split collet disposed within the pocket, the split collet having a variable inner bore; and a biasing element disposed within the pocket for biasing the split collet toward the inclined surface of the pocket.

Needle capture mechanisms

A combination cantilever push tab and finger rest is associated with the needle shield and extends distally from the distal end of the needle shield. The cantilever push tab and finger rest includes a cantilever portion that extends distally from the needle shield, preferably from an exterior surface of the needle shield, and an upstanding tab portion at the distal end of the cantilever portion. This configuration causes the upstanding tab to extend over the proximal portion of the catheter adapter and allows a clinician to insert a catheter using virtually any clinically acceptable technique for inserting a catheter into a patient.

A catheter and introducer needle assembly with needle shield that is connected to the needle hub by a pleated tether. The tether defines a plurality of holes therein to allow the introducer needle to extend through the tether. Each hole defines a longitudinal dimension and a radial dimension such that the radial dimension is less than the longitudinal dimension. This configuration improves the tensile strength of the tether. The tether prevents unwanted proximal movement of the needle with respect to the needle shield once the needle has been withdrawn into the needle shield.

A needle retraction mechanism includes a hollow handle defining a cavity, a needle hub assembly movably disposed in the handle, a biasing mechanism to move the needle hub assembly from an extended position to a retracted position and a latch to hold needle hub assembly in the extended position against the bias of the biasing mechanism. The needle hub assembly includes a flexible stopper at its proximal end that creates an air tight seal with the inner wall of the handle. This allows a vacuum to be created between the proximal end of the handle and the flexible stopper when the needle hub is moved from the retracted position to the extended position. The configuration of the flexible stopper allows it to change the amount of frictional force created between the inner wall of the handle and the flexible stopper when the device is at different elevations. At high elevations less frictional force exists between the inner wall of the handle and the flexible stopper while at low elevations greater frictional force exists between the inner wall of the handle and the flexible stopper.

Needle retraction mechanism with controlled retraction speed

A needle retraction mechanism includes a hollow handle defining a cavity, a tab associated with the handle, a needle hub assembly movably disposed in the handle, a biasing mechanism to move the needle hub assembly from an extended position to a retracted position and an arm to hold needle hub assembly in the extended position against the bias of the biasing mechanism. The tab and arm are configured such that downward movement of the tab engages the arm to allow the needle hub to move to the proximal end of the handle. In addition, the tab and arm are configured so that at least a portion of the downward movement of the tab is translated into a proximally directed axial movement of the needle hub This facilitates movement of the needle hub and overcomes any static friction between the needle hub and the inner wall of the handle tending to hold the needle hub in the extended position.
