A composite metallurgical product includes a roll cast aluminum alloy core and a filler material bonded on the core. Assemblies joined by filler material are formed from this product by heating to flow the filler material into joints and subsequent solidification of the filler material in the joints. The composite product is made in several ways, including lamination at roll caster rolls, and lamination or thermal spraying at the exit side of a roll caster. The invention additionally provides for an angulation rolling method for varying percent of cladding on the composite, and a high-manganese aluminum alloy useful as core material in brazing sheet clad with aluminum-silicon brazing alloy.

A fiber reinforced composite tape is made by casting a mixture comprising high temperature metal or intermetallic particles, substantially continuous ceramic fibers and a polymeric binder. The particles are preferably titanium alloy or titanium aluminide particles having a top size of greater than about 50 microns and the binder is preferably a polyisobutylene. The cast composite tape is combined with other tapes, heated in a vacuum to remove the binder and pressed at an elevated temperature and pressure to form a composite structure suitable for high temperature applications.

This invention relates to a metal alloy, comprised of two elements, a solute and a solvent, the solute having a maximum equilibrium solid solubility (at one atmosphere pressure) of less than 1 wt. -% in the solvent, the solvent and the solute dissolved therein forming a matrix phase, the matrix phase having a subgrain structure defined by subgrain boundaries and particles at intersections of the boundaries, the subgrains having an average size of less than 5 microns in diameter, and, within the subgrains a dispersion of particles which are finer than the particles at the subgrain boundaries, both types of particles being harder than the matrix phase.

An improvement in roll casting apparatus is disclosed which comprises side edge dam means for delivering a flow of gas toward the side edges of metal as it passes, from a source of molten metal, through a pair of opposing roll casting means to thereby contain the side flow of such metal during the roll casting operation. In a preferred embodiment, the gas is directed toward the cast metal through porous side edge dam means attached to a plenum which is inserted into the nip of the roll casting means.

A shaped aluminum article is disclosed characterized by a yield strength of over 414 MPa (60 ksi) and good corrosion resistance when aged to a T76 temper. The article is formed from an aluminum base alloy having good formability in an annealed state, and sufficiently low quench sensitivity to permit air quenching. The alloy consists essentially of: 6.5. to 7.5 wt. % zinc, 2.4 to 3.0 wt. % magnesium, 0.0 to 0.8 wt. % copper, and 0.01 to 0.18 wt. % zirconium, with the following maximum amounts of other alloying ingredients or impurities: 0.2 wt. % silicon, 0.4 wt. % iron, 0.1 wt. % manganese, 0.05 wt. % chromium, 0.06 wt. % titanium, and 0.05 wt. % maximum each other alloying ingredient or impurity with a total maximum of 0.15 wt. %, the balance consisting of aluminum.

High strength and corrosion resistant aluminum article and method

Aluminum alloy products particularly for use in automotive applications may be advantageously produced from a body of aluminum base alloy consisting essentially of, by weight, 0.4 to 1.2% Si, 0.4 to 1.1% Mg, 0.2 to 0.8% Mn, 0.05 to 0.35% Fe, 0.1 to 0.6% Cu, the balance essentially aluminum and incidental elements and impurities. The alloy body may be homogenized at a temperature in the range of 900.degree. to 1100.degree. F and thereafter worked into wrought products such as sheet or extrusions which are solution heat treated and quenched and aged to a T4 condition prior to forming into automotive body panels, bumpers or the like, which may then be strengthened by heating or aging to the T6 condition.
