A method of mounting a gear train to a torque frame comprises the steps of providing a unitary carrier having a central axis that includes spaced apart side walls and circumferentially spaced connecting structure defining mounts that interconnect the side walls, spaced apart apertures provided between the mounts at an outer circumference of the carrier, gear pockets provided between the side walls and the mounts extending to the apertures, and a central opening in at least one of the side walls. A plurality of intermediate gears are inserted in the carrier. A first ring gear half of a ring gear is placed about the outer periphery of the intermediate gears. A torque frame is attached to the carrier.

Method of assembly for gas turbine fan drive gear system

A gas turbine engine includes a plurality of blades that deliver air into a compressor section and a drive gear system including an epicyclic transmission. A drive shaft interconnects a gear carrier of the epicyclic transmission and the plurality of blades. A turbine section drives an input of the drive gear system through a turbine shaft. The drive gear system is straddle mounted by a first bearing forward of the drive gear system and a second bearing aft of the drive gear system. A ring gear of the epicyclic transmission is coupled to an engine case with a compliant flexure at a position between the first bearing and the second bearing.

Gas turbine engine bearing and gearbox arrangement

A gas turbine engine includes a fan shaft diving a fan having fan blades. The gas turbine engine also includes a gear system including a sun gear surrounded by a plurality of intermediate gear, a carrier at least partially supporting said plurality of intermediate gears, and a ring gear surrounding said plurality of intermediate gears, wherein said sun gear is driven by a turbine. The gas turbine engine also includes a flexible coupling fixing said ring gear from rotation relative to an engine static structure and a lubricating system for said gear system. Said lubricating system includes a lubricant input, there being a stationary first bearing receiving lubricant from said lubricant input. Said bearing has an inner first race in which lubricant flows, and a second bearing for rotation within said first bearing. Said second bearing has a first opening in registration with said inner first race such that lubricant may flow from said inner first race through said first opening into a first conduit. Said first conduit is in fluid communication with said plurality of intermediate gears. A gas turbine engine is also disclosed.

Planetary gear system arrangement with auxiliary oil system

A gas turbine engine includes a propulsor section including a propulsor having blades extending from a propulsor hub, and a propulsor shaft that drives the propulsor hub. A compressor section includes a first compressor having a rotatable compressor hub. A speed reduction device drives the compressor hub and the propulsor through a connection established axially forward of the epicyclic gear system relative to an engine longitudinal axis. The epicyclic gear system is straddled by forward and aft bearings that engage a carrier of the speed reduction device.

Gas turbine engine with front support arrangement

A gas turbine engine has a fan drive turbine driving a gear reduction, the gear reduction, in turn, driving a fan rotor, the fan rotor delivering air into a bypass duct as bypass air and into a compressor section as core flow. A forward bearing is positioned between the gear reduction and the fan rotor and supports the gear reduction. A second bearing is positioned aft of the gear reduction and supports the gear reduction. The second bearing is a thrust bearing. A fan drive turbine drive shaft drives the gear reduction. The fan drive turbine drive shaft has a weakened link which is aft of the second bearing such that the fan drive turbine drive shaft will tend to fail at the weakened link, and at a location aft of the second bearing.

An aircraft propulsion system is disclosed and includes a first gas turbine engine including a first input shaft driving a first gear system, a first fan driven by the first gear system, a first generator supported on the first input shaft and a fan drive electric motor providing a drive input to the first fan, a second gas turbine engine including a second input shaft driving a second gear system, a second fan driven by the second gear system, a second generator supported on the second input shaft and a second fan drive electric motor providing a drive input to the second fan and a controller controlling power output from each of the first and second generators and directing the power output between each of the first and second fan drive electric motors.

Aircraft hybrid propulsion fan drive gear system dc motors and generators

A gas turbine engine includes a fan drive turbine, a fan rotor, and a gear reduction driven by the fan drive turbine and, in turn, to drive the fan rotor. A main oil supply system supplies oil to components within the gear reduction, and an auxiliary oil supply system. The auxiliary oil supply system includes a rotation sensor for sensing rotation of a component that will rotate with the fan rotor, a control, an auxiliary oil pump, and a main supply sensor for sensing operation of the main oil supply system. The control is programmed to supply oil from the auxiliary oil pump to the gear reduction when the rotation sensor senses the component is rotating. A determination is made that inadequate oil is being supplied from the main oil supply system based upon information from the main supply sensor.

Electric motor driven auxiliary oil system for geared gas turbine engine

A gas turbine engine includes, among other things, a propulsor section including a propulsor hub, the hub including a hub diameter supporting a plurality of propulsor blades. A compressor section includes a first compressor and a second compressor. A turbine section includes a first turbine and a second turbine. A geared architecture interconnects the first turbine and the propulsor hub. The geared architecture includes a gear volume. A compressor inlet passage is disposed annularly about the geared architecture.

Gas turbine engine front section

An exemplary gas turbine engine includes a fan section including a fan rotor and at least one fan blade. A fan pressure ratio across the at least one fan blade is less than 1.45, noninclusive of the pressure across any fan exit guide vane system. The engine further includes a low-pressure compressor having a low-pressure compressor rotor that rotates together with the fan rotor at a common speed in operation, and a geared architecture that drives the low-pressure compressor rotor and the fan rotor. The geared architecture has a gear reduction ratio of greater than 2.5. The engine further includes a high-pressure compressor having a pressure ratio greater than 20, a low-pressure turbine having a pressure ratio greater than 5, and a bypass ratio greater than 10.

Geared turbomachine fan and compressor rotation

A gas turbine engine includes a propulsor and a drive gear system. The drive gear system includes at least one ring gear, a plurality of intermediate gears positioned between and enmeshing with a sun gear and the at least one ring gear, with the plurality of intermediate gears carried by a gear carrier. A first bearing is configured to rotate with the gear carrier. A second bearing is on an opposite side of the drive gear system from the first bearing.

A gear reduction for a gas turbine engine includes intermediate gears, a single structure establishing a carrier centered on an axis and having a pair of axially spaced apart side walls, axially extending circumferentially spaced connecting structure for connecting the pair of side walls, a central opening in at least one of the side walls, and circumferentially spaced smaller openings spaced radially outwardly of the central opening, with internal surfaces of the circumferentially spaced connecting structure defining intermediate gear pockets that extend away from the central opening to the circumferentially spaced openings. The intermediate gears are receivable through the central opening and are secured in the intermediate gear pockets. A ring gear includes a first ring gear half and a second ring gear half placed on an outer periphery of the intermediate gears such that ring gear teeth of the first and second ring gear halves engage with teeth of the intermediate gears.

Gas turbine fan drive gear system

A gas turbine engine includes a propulsor having blades extending from a propulsor hub. A compressor section includes a first compressor and a second compressor. A speed reduction device includes an epicyclic gear system. The epicyclic gear system includes a sun gear, a plurality of intermediate gears, a carrier supporting the intermediate gears and the propulsor hub, and a ring gear. A turbine section includes a first turbine and a second turbine. The second turbine drives the propulsor through the epicyclic gear system. The epicyclic gear system is straddled by forward and aft bearings that engage the carrier.

A gas turbine engine including a fan and an oil pump operatively connected to the fan by a main input drive gear, the drive gear rotating when the fan rotor rotates in either a first or second direction of the fan. Further included is a gear train intermediate the main input drive gear and the oil pump, the gear train including a first and second pinion gear, the first and second pinion gear each driven by the main input drive gear, the first pinion gear driving a first gear through a first clutch, the second pinion gear driving a second gear through a second clutch. Only one of the clutches transmits rotation from the respective pinion gear to the respective gear when the fan is rotating in the first direction, with the only the other clutch transmitting rotation when the fan is rotating in the second direction.

A gas turbine engine according to the present disclosure includes, among other things, a propulsor section including a propulsor having a plurality of blades, the plurality of blades having a peak tip radius Rt and an inboard leading edge radius Rh at a first inboard boundary of a first flowpath, and a core engine including a first turbine that drives a first compressor and a second turbine that drives the propulsor section. A second inboard boundary of a core flowpath has a radius R1 defined at a first stage of a second compressor and has a radius R2 defined at a splitter rim that guides flow into the core flowpath.

Geared turbofan engine gearbox arrangement

A gas turbine engine has a fan drive turbine for driving a gear reduction. The gear reduction drives a fan rotor. A lubrication system supplies oil to the gear reduction, and includes a lubricant pump to supply an air/oil mixture to an inlet of a deaerator. The deaerator includes a separator for separating oil and air, delivering separated air to an air outlet, and delivering separated oil back into an oil tank. The separated oil is first delivered into a pipe outwardly of the oil tank, and then into a location beneath a minimum oil level in the tank. Air within the oil tank moves outwardly through an air exit into the deaerator. A method of designing a gas turbine engine is also disclosed.
