A modular air conditioning system comprises a self-contained refrigeration power cell, a heat exchanger remotely located from the refrigeration power cell, and a low pressure refrigerant communication circuit operably coupling the refrigeration power cell to the heat exchanger. The refrigeration power cell comprises a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device, and an evaporator which are serially coupled to form a high pressure closed refrigeration circuit. A drive mechanism, such as an electric or hydraulic motor, or conventional belt, is coupled to the compressor. The low pressure refrigerant communication circuit thermally interfaces with the condenser to remove heat from the high pressure closed refrigeration circuit. Alternatively, this circuit thermally interfaces with the evaporator to remove heat from the low pressure refrigerant. This heat exchanger is adapted to mount in the cabin of an over-the-road or off-road vehicle. Preferably, a second heat exchanger and a second low pressure refrigerant communication circuit is included. This second circuit thermally interfaces with the condenser to remove heat from the refrigeration circuit.

Modular low pressure delivery vehicle air conditioning system

An auxiliary active heating and air conditioning system which uses a fuel fired heater as an energy source for both heating and air conditioning a passenger area of a motor vehicle. The system also utilizes a single heat exchanger to supply both heated and cooled air to the passenger area. The system includes a fuel fired heater for heating heat transfer fluid and a two bed sorber cooling system. The system being operable in a heating mode and a cooling mode. In the heating mode, the heated heat transfer fluid from the fuel fired heater is directed to heat exchanger in order to heat the passenger compartment. In the cooling mode, the heat transfer fluid from the heater is alternately directed to the two sorber beds such that one sorber bed is heated while the other bed cools. The alternate heating and cooling of the sorber beds in the cooling mode causes the sorber cooling system to operate and thereby deliver cooled heat transfer fluid to the heat exchanger in the passenger area.

Auxiliary active heating and air conditioning system for motor vehicle

An auxiliary heating and air conditioning system has an output for selectively delivering warm air and cool air to the passenger area of a motor vehicle. The auxiliary system includes a thermo-electric cooler, which is a solid state device having a hot side and a cold side. Heat exchangers are disposed in connection with the hot side and cold side of the thermo-electric cooler to facilitate the transfer of thermal energy away from each side of the thermo-electric cooler. Two fans are disposed in fluid communication with the first and second heat exchangers to transfer air across the exchangers and to the output for selectively heating and cooling the passenger area of the motor vehicle. Interposed between the first and second heat exchangers and the output, are first and second arrays of energy storage panels. Preferably, these panels contain phase change material which is charged during the operation of the motor vehicle to change phase and therefore store thermal energy. When the motor vehicle is shut down, the thermal energy stored within the first and second arrays of energy storage panels is utilized to provide warm and cool air (as carried by the blower) to the internal passenger space of the motor vehicle. Similar heating and air conditioning systems are also provided that, rather than a thermo-electric cooler, utilize a vortex tube or sorption refrigeration technology.

Auxiliary heating and air conditioning system for a motor vehicle

A dual channel motor vehicle ventilation apparatus provides independent air temperature control. The apparatus comprises a housing having at least one air inlet and a first and second air outlet. First and second fluid communication channels are provided within the housing and defined air passages extending between the at least one air inlet and the first and second air outlets. First and second blowers are associated with the first and second air outlets, respectively, and serve to suction air from the air inlet, through the first and second fluid communication channels, and expel the air through the respective air outlet. A heating coil is included within the housing and disposed to project at least partially into the first and second fluid communication channels. First and second flow valves are disposed within the first and second fluid communication channels and are independently operable to direct a portion of the air flowing through each fluid communication channel across the heating coil. Varying the position of the first and second flow valves controllably varies the temperature of the air expelled from the corresponding air outlet.
