A method for removing at least one contaminant from a fluid stream by filtering the fluid stream with a filtration medium. The filtration medium includes an impregnate. The impregnate includes a surfactant such as sulfamic acid. The medium has from about 0.1 to about 25% by weight of impregnate. The method is useful for removing one or more volatile organic compounds, particularly formaldehyde, from the fluid stream. In some embodiments, the method includes removing at least two volatile organic compound contaminants from the fluid stream.

Method for removing contaminant from a fluid stream

Dry-scrubbing media compositions, methods of preparation and methods of use are provided. The compositions contain activated alumina and magnesium oxide. Optionally, activated carbon and other impregnates, such as hydroxides of group 1A metals, are included. The compositions exhibit improved efficiency and capacity for the removal of compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide, from an air-stream. The compositions are particularly useful for reducing or preventing the release of toxic gaseous compounds from the areas such as landfills, petroleum storage areas, refineries, drinking water systems, sewage treatment facilities, swimming pools, hospital morgues, animal rooms, and pulp and paper production sites.

Dry-scrubbing media compositions and methods of production and use

A method and apparatus for monitoring and reporting corrosion in terms recognized as conforming to an industry standard includes coating a substrate with a corrodible metallic substance of predetermined thickness, passing a current through the metallic substance, and generating a signal when electrical continuity is broken due to corrosion of the metallic substance. In one embodiment the apparatus includes a printed circuit board onto which the coated substrate is mounted, a power source for applying an electrical current across the coated substrate, and a display (such as a light or LCD panel) for providing an indication/alert that electrical continuity has been broken due to corrosion of the metallic substance. A corrosion sensor according to the present invention finds application in such environments as industrial process measurement and control rooms, motor control centers, electrical rooms, semiconductor clean rooms, electronic fabrication sites, commercial data centers, museums, libraries, and archival storage rooms.

Corrosion sensor using electrical continuity

A high capacity filtration media, method of preparing the media, and method of treating a fluid stream with the media are provided. The media contain a porous substrate impregnated with high concentrations of a permanganate. Preferably, the media includes a porous substrate impregnated with at least about 8% permanganate by weight. The media can optionally contain sodium bicarbonate. Improved capacity for the removal of undesirable compounds such as ethylene, formaldehyde, hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan are achieved.

Optionally, activated carbon and other impregnates, such as sulfates of group 1A metals, are included in the compositions. The impregnate includes an organic amine and an inorganic metal salt. The inorganic metal salt includes magnesium oxide, calcium oxide or combinations thereof. The medium has from about 0.1 to about 25% by weight of impregnate. The impregnate contains from about 0.1 to about 5% by weight organic amine, and the organic amine includes aqueous urea, solid urea, melamine or mixtures thereof. The impregnate contains from about 0.1 to about 5% by weight metal salt. The impregnate optionally further includes a surfactant such as polyacrylic acid. In some embodiments, the method includes removing at least two contaminants from the fluid stream.

Method for removing contaminants from a fluid stream

A method for forming a filtration media from waste media includes combining the waste media with a binder to form a dry mixture, adding a liquid composition to the dry mixture to form a slurry, and extruding the slurry to form a filtration media. The waste media may include fines or oversized media resulting from a prior media production process that have been subjected to a hydration process. The waste media may be ground and sized prior to combining it with the binder. The binder may include clay, cellulose materials, and combinations thereof. The liquid composition may include water and optionally one or more additional additives selected from the group consisting of permanganates, acids, bases, amines and combinations thereof. In one embodiment, the slurry is extruded into a honeycomb matrix.

Filtration media having recycled waste materials

A solid air filtration medium includes an impregnate with an organic amine and an inorganic metal salt. The medium has from about 0.1 to about 25% by weight of impregnate. The impregnate contains from about 0.1 to about 5% by weight organic amine, and the organic amine includes aqueous urea, solid urea, melamine or mixtures thereof. The impregnate contains from about 0.1 to about 5% by weight metal salt, and the metal salt includes magnesium oxide, calcium oxide or mixtures thereof. The impregnate optionally further includes a surfactant such as polyacrylic acid. Methods for forming a solid air filtration medium having an impregnate containing an organic amine and an inorganic metal salt and methods for removing contaminants from a fluid stream are also provided.

Dry scrubbing air filtration media

A fiber filter, method of preparing the fiber filter, and method of treating a fluid stream with the fiber filter are disclosed. The fiber filter comprises an inert fiber matrix, water, and a substrate bound to the fiber matrix that is capable of oxidizing or neutralizing a contaminant. More specifically, the substrate bound to the fiber matrix is sodium bicarbonate, impregnated activated alumina, impregnated zeolite, or a mixture thereof. The impregnate is a permanganate salt, sodium bicarbonate, or a mixture thereof. Improved efficiency of removal of undesirable compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide from fluid streams is achieved.

Fiber filter and methods of use thereof

An improved filtration media, method of preparing the media, and method of treating a fluid stream with the media are disclosed. The improved media comprises a substrate having elevated levels of permanganate and water in one embodiment. More specifically, the improved media comprises a porous substrate impregnated with at least approximately 5% permanganate, and at least approximately 10% water, by weight. In another embodiment, the media further comprises sodium bicarbonate. Improved efficiency of removal of undesirable compounds such as hydrogen sulfide is achieved.

A method and apparatus for using a coated piezoelectric crystal to monitor and report corrosion in terms recognized as conforming to an industry standard is disclosed. The present invention provides a method of and system for monitoring corrosion in a corrosive atmosphere, comprising and carrying out the steps of exciting in the atmosphere a crystal, coated with a corrodible metallic substance and having a known vibration frequency; measuring the change in the frequency of vibration resulting from corrosion of the corrodible substance during each of a plurality of intervals of time, including a reference interval and at least one subsequent measurement interval; generating a thickness signal representing the thickness of corrosion corresponding to the measured change in frequency during the measurement interval; and converting the corrosion thickness signal for the measurement interval to a reference signal representing the thickness of corrosion accumulated during the reference interval. The invention also preferably includes correcting the measured frequency change during each interval to account for any deviation in the temperature in the atmosphere from a preset standard temperature. The present invention also preferably includes a humidity sensor, which serves as the impetus for providing an alarm to the user if the relative humidity is above a preset limit, or if the relative humidity changes during an interval by more than a preset limit. A corrosion monitor according to the present invention finds application in such environments as industrial process measurement and control rooms, motor control centers, electrical rooms, semiconductor clean rooms, electronic fabrication sites, commercial data centers, museums, libraries, and archival storage rooms.
