A direct-write method, apparatus and end use device for selective separation of at least one layer of material from another layer of material at the interface between them using a beam of electromagnetic radiation from an ultrashort pulse source is disclosed.

Method and apparatus for the selective separation of two layers of material using an ultrashort pulse source of electromagnetic radiation

A method of using a beam of ultra-short laser pulses, having pulse durations below 10 picoseconds, to adjust an optical characteristic within an optical medium is provided. The beams would have an intensity above a threshold for altering the index of refraction of a portion of the optical medium. The beams could be selectively applied to the optical medium and any structures formed or existing therein. Thus, the beam could be moved within a waveguide in the optical medium to alter the index of refraction of the waveguide forming any number of different longitudinal index of refraction profiles. The beam could also be moved within the optical medium near the waveguide to alter an effective index of refraction of a signal traveling within the waveguide. The techniques described can be used to improve, alter or correct performance of waveguide-based optical devices, such as arrayed waveguide gratings and cascaded planar waveguide interferometers.

Method of index trimming a waveguide and apparatus formed of the same

A hacksaw weight having a pair of axially aligned saw engagement members adjustably secured to one another by an extending threaded support shaft. A threaded engagement-retaining fitting can be selectively positioned on the threaded support shaft with a retaining disk and registration pin positioned thereon for engagement with aligned notches in the respective engagement members. The weight can be selectively secured in multiple positions on both the hacksaw frame and blade.

Adjustable hacksaw weight

An apparatus for maintaining an electromagnetic beam, namely a laser beam, aimed at a particular point in space and aligned with a unique propagation path. The apparatus includes one or more adjustable beam steerers located in the propagation path, and first and second spaced apart beam position detectors arranged in the beam path. The beam steerer(s) are preferably adjustable along at least two orthogonal axes of rotation for controlling the propagation direction of the beam. Error signals from the position sensors are fed into a beam steerer controller connected to the beam steerer(s) for electro-mechanically adjusting the beam steerer. The method of the invention involves fixing the propagation path on an angularly adjustable beam steering surface so that the propagation path at a different unique point in space, such as a target, can be controlled by adjusting the angular orientation of that beam steerer.

Apparatus for controlling the position and direction of a laser beam

An ultrashort optical pulse amplifier that incorporates a gain medium preferentially cooled along a crystalline axis for partially ameliorating the thermally induced distortions and losses created by cylindrically symmetric cooled designs. The ultrashort pulse amplifier can be pumped with higher pump powers without degradation of the output spatial mode structure and the overall efficiency of extraction of energy from the gain medium is improved. The gain medium preferably has a rectangular cross section and cooling means are provided in thermal contact with only selected opposing surfaces of the gain medium so that thermal gradients lie approximately along a crystalline axis to reduce thermally-induced birefringence.

Ultrashort optical pulse amplifiers incorporating a gain medium

An apparatus for seeding a solid-state, ultrashort optical pulse amplifier system comprises an excitation source that pumps a gain medium which is restricted to the core of an optical fiber. The gain medium is disposed in a resonant cavity with components arranged to produce ultrashort pulses of light at a fundamental wavelength. Such systems are well known to those skilled in the art. These ultrashort pulses are then frequency-doubled in a non-linear crystal to produce a seed pulse whose doubled frequency substantially matches that of the amplifier gain medium. These seed pulses are then injected into the amplifier wherein they are amplified.

Fiber source for seeding an ultrashort optical pulse amplifier

In a pump/probe experiment, information about an event is detected and correlated with an accumulatable quantity representing the elapsed time interval between the arrival of the pump and probe pulses at the experiment. The accumulatable quantity is used to configure the pump and probe sources to eliminate temporal resolution problems caused by pulse timing jitter, the complexity of amplification, continuum generation, and subsequent reamplification, as well as data acquisition rate limitations. Two pulse sources serve as pump and probe pulses respectively. Each pulse is directed at the experiment. A portion of each pump pulse is diverted to a detector before it reaches the experiment, and a portion of each probe pulse is diverted to another detector. The pump and probe pulses are no-coincident in time at the experiment. Quantities related to the time difference and the information imposed on the probe pulse by the experiment are accumulated to obtain data about the temporal evolution of the event.

Timed-resolved spectroscopy with split pump and probe pulses

An optical delay line includes first and second hollow front surface retroreflectors. A translator is coupled to one of the first and second retroreflectors for adjusting the distance between the retroreflectors while maintaining the optical relationship between them. An entrance is provided for introducing a light beam into the delay line so that the light beam is reflected between the first and second retroreflectors a plurality of times; and an exit is provided to couple the beam out of the delay line.

Optical delay line

A tissue photoradiation system uses a hematoporphyrin or hematoporphyrin derivative dye in tissue to be irradiated and arranges a xenon ion laser 10 for simultaneous lasing. Deep blue light is produced at wavelengths of about 406-427 nanometers and red light at a wavelength of about 627 nanometers by using partially transmitting mirrors 12 and 13 arranged at opposite ends of the laser resonator. Mirror 12 has a coating 14 that substantially reflects blue light and partially transmits red light to produce a red light output, and the coating 15 of mirror 13 substantially reflects red light and partially transmits blue light producing a blue light output. The blue light output is transmitted to a diagnostic tissue irradiator 21 to illuminate the tissue and diagnose its condition. A transmission system using an optical fiber 25 delivers the red light to the tissue for treatment purposes. The red light is radiated out the side of an optical fiber region 30a to be directed into large area of tissue.
