Apparatus and method for drilling a drain hole from a well are provided. A flexible tubing used for conveying fluid to a jet bit is confined radially by a reduced-diameter tubing piece or a liner in production tubing near the diverter used to direct the flexible tubing. Concentric tubing pieces allow location of the bit in a well by measuring weight of a work string.

Tubular system for jet drilling

A tool body on tubing directs a mechanical cutter or jet bit to the casing. A hole is cut in casing and a rotary detent mechanism may be used to drill additional holes through casing and enable alignment of a jet bit with the holes for drilling drainholes without removing apparatus from the well. Disposable nozzles in a guide channel or nozzles on the tool body may be used for drilling through casing.

Perforating and jet drilling method and apparatus

Apparatus and method for drilling perforations in well casing and drainholes into a subterranean formation around a well are provided. A tool body on tubing directs a mechanical cutter or jet bit to the casing. A hole is cut in casing and a rotary detent mechanism may be used to drill additional holes through casing to enable alignment of a jet bit with the holes for drilling drainholes without removing apparatus from the well. Method is provided for drilling of formations containing carbonate minerals with flexible tubing capable of being turned in a very short radius. The very flexible tubing may be placed inside a work string in a well with coiled tubing and a micro-jet bit on the tubing be diverted to a selected direction and depth. Acidic drilling fluid pumped through the micro-jet bit allows high rates of drilling with hydrochloric acid. A slip joint between coiled tubing and the flexible tubing may be used to allow jet drilling without movement of the coiled tubing and use of a jet bit with forward-facing jets. Mixing of acid and base solutions downhole may be used to provide hotter acid solutions for drilling.

Chemically Enhanced Stimulation of oil/gas formations

Method and apparatus are provided for pumping operations that may be used to form perforations in the casing of a well, clean perforations and drill drain holes through perforations. A plunger is placed in a reference perforation and the pumping operations may be performed through a nozzle at a known location with respect to the reference perforation. The nozzle may be attached to a flexible hose to drill a drain hole or may be inserted in a body on the bottom of a tubing string. Addition apparatus and method are provided to insure that the plunger or plungers are maintained in a reference perforation or perforations when pumping operations are carried out through tubing.

Perforation alignment tool for jet drilling, perforating and cleaning

A jet nozzle is provided for drilling holes through the earth, such as drainholes around a well. The nozzle may include orifices for discharging fluid to drive the nozzle forward and includes a disk or other device having orifices to produce a swirling motion to fluid in the body of the nozzle. Swirling fluid is discharged from a front orifice and an extension is placed forward of the front orifice to confine the swirling fluid in a radial direction.

Nozzle for jet drilling and associated method

An intermittent gas lift well pumping system containing an accumulator, a gas line, a liquid discharge line, and a battery operated controller. By using one or more constrictions in the gas line and acoustical techniques, accurate liquid level is determined in the pumping system for optimum production. Bypasses are connected between the gas line and the liquid discharge line. Each contains a valve that opens at a preset absolute pressure in the gas line, an orifice, and a one-way valve. The bypasses are strategically placed to prevent overloading of the system. A liquid slug sensor on the upper end of the liquid discharge line and a rabbit in this line enables optimum production and gas conservation.

Method and apparatus for gas lift system for oil and gas wells

Nozzle jet drill bits for drilling drainholes from a wellbore are provided in a 4 &frac12;-inch or larger casing. The drills are small enough to allow use of a bit diverter to turn the bits about 90 degrees in the casing when attached to an elastomeric high-pressure tube. Pumping of fluid, which may contain abrasive particles, through the bits allows drilling though the wall of casing, if present, and continued drilling into a formation surrounding the well without withdrawing the bit from the well. Direction-indicating instruments and geophones may be used to measure or monitor direction and location of the bit. One type of jet drill that may be used can change direction of drilling by controlling pressure at the bit.

Method and apparatus for jet drilling drainholes from wells

There is provided a method and apparatus for removing liquid from a well using well bore pressurized gas. A U-shaped tube having a small orifice near the bottom thereof is received in the well. The upper portions of both legs of the tube are connected to well bore pressurized gas. A liquid sensor is received in one leg of the tube. When liquid flowing into the tube through the orifice rises to the level of the sensor, a valve, which is connected to one leg of the tube, is opened and the well head pressurized gas forces the liquid out of the tube and then out of the well.

Method and apparatus for pumping liquid from a well using wellbore

There is provided an improved fluid pumping device including an enclosure to be placed downhole in a well. A first hollow tube is received in the enclosure and extends to the surface of the well for removing fluid from the well. A second hollow tube also extends into the enclosure for forcing a gas into the enclosure. The bottom of the enclosure has an opening for permitting fluid to enter. A mechanical mechanism is provided for forcing the closing of the opening in the enclosure so that the device may be utilized in deep wells where high fluid pressures occur.
