Systems and methods of managing the voltage of fuel cells during no-load or low load events are disclosed. The systems may employ one or more valves such as an inlet and outlet valve for metering the fuel (e.g., hydrogen) and/or oxidant (e.g., oxygen) provided to the fuel cell. The voltage or voltage rise may be limited by starving the fuel cell of, for example, oxygen. A controller may be employed for controlling the one or more valves during a no-load or low load event such as start-up, idling, or stopping.

Cell voltage control through oxygen starvation for fuel cell systems

A fuel cell system has a fuel cell stack including a plurality of fuel cells and an anode injector system, and a controller programmed. The controller, responsive to an amplitude of cyclic changes in voltage of at least some of the fuel cells exceeding a threshold, a frequency of the cyclic changes being within a predetermined range of a frequency associated with the anode injector system, and the voltage being less than a predetermined value, disables the fuel cell stack.

Voltage-based fuel cell control

A vehicle includes a fuel cell, an inlet valve, a purge valve, and a controller. The fuel cell has an anode side configured to receive hydrogen. The inlet valve is configured to open to deliver the hydrogen to the anode side. The purge valve is configured to open to purge water and nitrogen from the anode side. The controller is programmed to, operate the inlet valve to inject hydrogen into the anode side via opening the inlet valve followed by closing the inlet valve. The controller is further programmed to, in response to a concentration of the hydrogen in the anode side being less than threshold, open the purge valve to purge water and nitrogen from the anode side.

Vehicle fuel cell purging system

A fuel cell system includes a stack of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells defining a body, the body including a coolant inlet and coolant outlet, a cathode inlet and cathode outlet corresponding to a cathode, an anode inlet and an anode outlet corresponding to an anode. The fuel cell system also includes a cathode humidifier fluidly connected to the cathode inlet to provide a humidified inlet stream to the cathode inlet, an oxygen sensor positioned upstream of the cathode inlet and downstream of the cathode humidifier, and configured to measure oxygen content of the humidified inlet stream, and a controller connected to the cathode humidifier and the oxygen sensor and configured to operate the cathode humidifier based on the oxygen content of the humidified inlet stream.

A fuel cell system including a fuel cell stack, separator and a scavenging reservoir. The fuel cell stack is configured to generate water and reusable fuel. The separator is downstream of and in fluid communication with the fuel cell stack. The separator is configured to separate the water from the reusable fuel. The scavenging reservoir is downstream of and in fluid communication with the separator. The scavenging reservoir is configured to receive the water from the separator. The scavenging reservoir includes an inlet portion, an outlet portion, and a middle portion positioned between the inlet and outlet portions. The middle portion includes a reservoir and a passageway extending there between. The passageway is configured to allow a fluid stream to flow there through when the reservoir is occupied by a frozen fluid.

Fuel cell purge line system

An air-conditioning system and method of climate control for a fuel cell vehicle are provided herein. The system and method include a vacuum enclosure having an adsorber and an evaporator/condenser assembly. A conduit and valve system operates the air-conditioning system in two modes of operation to provide uninterrupted cooling to a passenger cabin, among other things. In one mode of operation, the adsorber is regenerated using waste heat from a fuel cell stack.

Air-conditioning system and climate control method for a fuel cell vehicle

A vehicle includes a fuel cell having a stack for generating power and a controller. The controller is programmed to, in response to a fuel cell temperature decreasing to less than a temperature threshold after a shutdown, initiate a primary purge of the stack and terminate the primary purge at a predetermined anode pressure.

A fuel cell assembly includes a fuel cell arrangement having first and second plates sandwiching a membrane electrode assembly. The arrangement defines first and second header regions that each include supply and return headers. The first plate defines coolant channels that extend between the header regions and connect to the return header in the first region. The second plate defines coolant channels that extend between the header regions and connect to the supply header in the first region.

Fuel cell assembly with cooling system

A fuel cell system in a vehicle includes a fuel cell stack and a cooling system for cooling the fuel cell stack. The cooling system has a radiator and at least one pump configured to supply coolant to the fuel cell stack. A controller operates the cooling system to actively cool the fuel cell stack while the vehicle is shut down in response to conditions indicating that the next time the vehicle will be started, it will be a cold start. The controller can then, subsequent to initiating the cooling, purge the fuel cell stack.

A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack in fluid communication with a separator. The separator has a first portion and a second portion forming a chamber. The first portion has a continuous inner wall and an end wall, with an inlet conduit connected to the inner wall and a liquid drain connected to the end wall. The second portion has an end wall and an outlet conduit extending into the chamber to form a channel with the inner wall of the first portion. A fuel cell separator includes a first end and a second end connected by a side wall to define a separation chamber. An inlet conduit is tangentially connected to the wall. An outlet conduit is connected to the first end and extending into the chamber to form a channel with the wall. A liquid drain is connected to the second end.

Centrifugal water separator for a fuel cell system

A humidification system for a fuel cell may include a condenser configured to receive fluid output from a cathode of the fuel cell and cool the fluid to extract water from it. A heat exchanger operable to transfer heat from a heat source to an airflow flowing through the heat exchanger may also be included. When the heated airflow is brought into contact with at least some of the extracted water, the airflow is humidified prior to its entering the cathode.

A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack, an ejector in fluid communication with the fuel cell stack and having a converging-diverging (CD) nozzle with a hydrogen feed nozzle and a recirculation conduit upstream of a throat of the CD nozzle, and a thermal source configured to heat the ejector. A hydrogen supply assembly for a fuel cell system includes an ejector having a converging-diverging (CD) nozzle and a mixing chamber upstream of the CD nozzle. The mixing chamber has a recirculation conduit and a hydrogen feed nozzle. A thermal source is configured to heat the ejector. A method of controlling a hydrogen supply device for a fuel cell includes, in response to detecting a heating condition at fuel cell start up, controlling a thermal source to heat an ejector upstream of an anode stack to prevent ice formation in the ejector.

A vehicle includes a fuel cell system, and a controller configured to receive a first signal indicative of a predicted ambient temperature at a specified location, and command the fuel cell system to operate at a reduced relative humidity when the predicted ambient temperature is below a threshold value. A method for controlling a fuel cell system includes receiving a first signal at a controller indicative of a predicted ambient temperature for a specified location, and operating the fuel cell system at a reduced relative humidity when the predicted ambient temperature is below a threshold value. A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack, and a controller configured to, in response to receiving a predicted freezing condition, command the fuel cell stack to operate at a lower relative humidity level for a time period preceding a predicted time for system shut down.

Freeze preparation for a fuel cell system

A separator for a fuel cell includes first and second ends connected by a side wall to define a separation chamber. The first end has a protrusion extending into the chamber to form a channel with the wall. An inlet conduit is tangentially connected to the wall. An outlet conduit connected to the wall between the inlet conduit and the first end. A liquid drain is connected to the second end. A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack and a separator. The separator has first and second portions forming a chamber and a divider. The first portion has a continuous inner wall, an end wall forming a central convex projection, an inlet conduit and an outlet conduit. The second portion has a continuous inner wall, an end wall, and a liquid drain.

A fuel cell system may include a fuel cell stack, a manifold in fluid communication with the stack, and a pressure sensor. The pressure sensor may include a housing defining a chamber in fluid communication with the manifold, a pressure sensing element disposed within the chamber, and a heating element disposed within the chamber.
