A method is disclosed for making a transition from fueling an engine with hydrogen to another fuel. That other fuel may be gasoline, a gasoline and alcohol mixture, or gaseous fuels, as examples. The other fuel has the capability of providing higher BMEP than the hydrogen because of better air utilization and because the other fuel occupies less volume of the combustion chamber. Because a desirable equivalence ratio to burn hydrogen is at 0.5 or less and a desirable equivalence ratio to burn other fuel is at 1.0, when a demand for BMEP that leads to a transition change from hydrogen fuel to the other fuel, the amount of air supplied to the engine is decreased to provide more torque and vice versa. During a transition in which liquid fuel supply is initiated, it may be desirable to continue to provide some hydrogen, not leaner than 0.1 hydrogen equivalence ratio.

Bi-fuel engine using hydrogen

A method is described for operating a gaseous fueled engine, where gaseous fuel and intake air are delivered to a first intake port of a cylinder of the engine and intake air without gaseous fuel is delivered to a second intake port of the cylinder, the first port separated from the second port. Further, the method includes inducting the fuel and intake air from the first port via a first intake valve, and the intake air from the second port via a second intake valve, into the cylinder, where the first intake valve is opened after the second intake valve.

A method for a hydrogen fueled internal combustion engine to reduce backfiring, pre-ignition, and/or backflash, the engine also including a combustion chamber, an intake manifold, an exhaust manifold, at least one intake valve, at least one exhaust valve, a hydrogen injector, a compression device, and a variable valve timing system coupled to the intake valves. The method comprises compressing air using the compression device; injecting hydrogen and mixing at least said hydrogen with air discharged from the compression device; and opening the intake valve to induct at least air into the combustion chamber, wherein the intake valve opening time varies with an operating condition.

Variable intake valve and exhaust valve timing strategy for improving performance in a hydrogen fueled engine

A system for controlling electromechanical of an internal combustion has a valve-closing electromagnet for attracting the armature coupled to the valve to close the valve, a valve-opening electromagnet for attracting the armature to open the valve, a valve-opening spring for biasing the valve open, and a valve-closing spring for biasing the valve closed. The method includes de-energizing the valve-closing electromagnet for a predetermined time, enabling the valve to oscillate by the valve springs, and then energizing the valve-closing electromagnet to close the valve. Consequently, only the valve-closing electromagnet is energized to open and close the valve. The valve biasing springs force the valve to a location at which the valve-closing electromagnet can close the valve. This provides an electrical energy over prior methods in which both the valve-opening and valve-closing electromagnets are energized to actuate the valve.

Method to control electromechanical valves

A method is provided for an engine capable of burning gaseous fuel, the engine also including a combustion chamber, a fuel supply system with at least one fuel tank, at least one intake valve, and at least one exhaust valve, an injector to directly inject gaseous fuel into the combustion chamber, and an exhaust oxygen sensor. The method comprises directly injecting fuel from the injector into the chamber at a variable supply pressure which decreases as fuel tank pressure decreases; and adjusting at least one of an injection time and duration based at least on said variable pressure and information from the exhaust oxygen sensor.

Injection strategy to maximize efficiency in gaseous engine

A method for operating a fueling system in a vehicle having an engine capable of burning gaseous fuel supplied from at least a first and second source to a direct fuel injector of the engine, the first source having a higher source pressure than the second source, the method comprises supplying gaseous fuel to the direct injector from at least the first source during a first engine demand; and supplying gaseous fuel to the direct injector from at least the second source during a second engine demand less than said first engine demand.

A method for an engine capable of burning gaseous fuel, the engine also including a combustion chamber, at least one intake valve, and at least one exhaust valve, an injector to directly inject pressurized gaseous fuel into the combustion chamber, and a variable valve timing system coupled to the intake valves and exhaust valves, the method comprising closing the exhaust valve before top dead center of piston position to increase combustion chamber pressure achieved at top dead center and to trap exhaust gas in the cylinder; and starting injection of a gaseous fuel directly into the combustion chamber after the exhaust valve is closed and before the intake valve is opened.

System and method for direct injection of gaseous fuel into internal combustion engine

A hydrogen fueled reciprocating spark ignition engine includes a fuel system for providing gaseous hydrogen to the cylinders of the engine and a lean NOx trap coupled to the engine for treating the engine's exhaust. A controller determines when to purge the lean NOx trap and provides gaseous hydrogen to the lean NOx trap during purging by operating the engine fuel rich or injecting hydrogen upstream of the lean NOx trap.

Hydrogen fueled spark ignition engine

A hydrogen fueled reciprocating spark ignition engine includes a fuel system for providing gaseous hydrogen to the cylinders of the engine and a lean NOx trap coupled to the engine for treating the engine's exhaust. An EGR system provides recirculated exhaust gas to the engine, and a controller operates the fuel system and EGR system during periodic purging of the lean NOx trap such that the engine is operated fuel rich, with the mass of EGR approximating 40%-80% of the mass of air and fuel.

An intake valve phase shift in multi-valve engines to enhance air-fuel mixing and optimum combustion at all operating conditions. The intake valve members are independently operated by electro-mechanical actuators or the like, and activated and deactivated by the electronic controller of the engine. A channel or passageway in a diverter member positioned between the two intake ports in the cylinder head allows air and fuel from a closed intake port to be diverted to an open intake port and thus into the combustion chamber. The passageway preferably has a configuration with a certain curvature, orientation and position relative to the diameter of the inlet ports. The curvature is about one-half the diameter D of the inlet port, the passageway is symmetrical from port to port and directs the fuel toward the opposite sides of the ports, and the passageway is positioned about D/4 from the valve seats.

Multi-valve engine with gas exchange channel between inlet ports

A strategy and control system for a variable displacement engine in which cylinder deactivation is obtained by intake cam phasing and exhaust valve deactivation. Fuel control for the engine and spark deactivation are sequenced with valve deactivation to avoid transferring engine exhaust gases to the intake manifold of the engine during a transition between full cylinder operation and partial cylinder operation. Excess air flow through the exhaust system for the engine is avoided during a transition from partial cylinder operation to full cylinder operation. These features achieve stable engine performance during the transition.

Strategy and control system for deactivation and reactivation of cylinders of a variable displacement engine

A fuel injection system for a gaseous-fueled engine is provided. The fuel injection system comprises at least one gaseous fuel injector for each of the engine cylinders, wherein each fuel injector is located proximate the intake manifold. A guide tube connects each of the gaseous fuel injectors to at least one of the intake ports. The guide tube comprises a fluid passage arranged within the respective intake port substantially tangent and adjacent to an interior wall of the intake port and directed toward the respective intake valve. The guide tube is adapted to deliver high-pressure gaseous fuel from the injector to the respective combustion chamber along the interior wall of the intake port. In this way, the high velocity peripheral fuel charge creates a lower pressure central core within the intake part which, in turn, increases the overall intake charge flow and engine volumetric efficiency.

Gaseous-fuel injection system and method

A crankcase ventilation system for an internal combustion engine includes a first valve for controlling air flow into the engine's crankcase, a second valve for controlling air flow out of the crankcase, and a separator for receiving air flowing from the second valve and for removing oil entrained in the air. The first and second valves may be spring-operated valves, such as reed valves.
