A direct-injection stratified charge internal combustion engine includes a combustion cylinder to receive an air-fuel mixture, and an air intake port to inlet air into the combustion cylinder. The direct-injection engine also includes a fuel injector configured to deliver fuel within the cylinder in a spray pattern substantially aligned to a cylinder central axis to create the air-fuel mixture. A spark igniter is located within a path of the spray pattern to ignite combustion of the air-fuel mixture. The direct-injection engine further includes a movable piston defining a lower boundary of the combustion cylinder to contain the combustion of the air-fuel mixture. The piston is configured to include a bowl portion having local geometric features located on an intake port side of the combustion cylinder to redirect fluid flow towards a vortex in fluid communication with a combustion location near the cylinder central axis.

Spark-ignited direct-injection engine combustion systems

An engine assembly may include a cylinder head and a fluid control assembly. The cylinder head may include first and second walls opposite one another and extending from a base region defining a cavity. The cylinder head may define a first oil passage extending through an interior surface defining the cavity. The fluid control assembly may include a first oil control valve and a first conduit. The first oil control valve may be fixed to the base region and may define a first port in fluid communication with the first oil passage and a second port in fluid communication with a second oil passage in the cylinder head. The first conduit may extend from the first oil control valve toward the first wall and may provide the fluid communication between the first port of the oil control valve and the first oil passage in the cylinder head.

Modular engine assembly and fluid control assembly for hydraulically-actuated mechanism

An inlet for a compressor having a housing defining a generally C-shaped inlet opening and a rotor cavity configured to contain first and second rotors is provided. The inlet includes an inlet duct defining an inlet opening and a generally C-shaped outlet opening. The inlet duct has an inner wall defining a cavity operable to communicate airflow between the inlet opening and the generally C-shaped outlet opening. The generally C-shaped outlet opening of the inlet duct is substantially similar to the shape of the generally C-shaped inlet opening of the housing. The inner wall includes a floor portion and a roof portion. At least a portion of the floor portion is contoured to impart a velocity component to the airflow complementary to the tangential velocity of each of the first and second rotors during rotation of the first and second rotors.
