A resilient extension for the flail elements of a flail-type material spreader is disclosed wherein the resilient extension is affixed to each respective flail head such that it sweepingly engages the interior surface of the material holding tank to substantially completely discharge all of the material from within the tank. The resilient extension can be in the form of a flat planar member or of a cross-shaped configuration. This substantially complete discharge of material eradicates the starter flail 'dead-head' problem by eliminating the mass of material which accumulates at the bottom of the tank. A resilient extension for the starter flails is also disclosed.

A novel drive system for a manure spreader is disclosed wherein an infinitely adjustable variable speed drive mechanism transfers power from the power input shaft to the apron assembly and a constant speed drive mechanism transfers power from the same power input shaft to the beater assembly. A bypass mechanism allows for an extension of the hydraulic cylinder controlling a cam device, used for varying the speed of the apron drive mechanism, without activation of the cam device when the power input shaft is not engaged for rotation of the drive system. A tensioning idler connected to the cam device through a lost motion linkage provides for disengagement of the beater drive system during the cleanout of the manure spreader by the apron assembly. A drive shaft to the beater assembly is included inside of a tubular drive shaft to the apron assembly, whereby a concentric drive line assembly transfers power rearwardly to the driven assemblies.

A device for automatically closing the fine material pan on a manure spreader is disclosed wherein, after being released to a clean-out position, the motion of the fluid endgate is utilized to return the fine material pan to its normal operating position. A lost motion linkage connects the fine material pan to the arm of the fluid endgate. A retraction of the fluid endgate to a transport position through manipulation of a tractor's hydraulic system effects a closing of the fine material pan without the operator having to dismount the tractor.

An L-shaped elongated discharge edge is integrally formed on the tank wall of a flail-type material spreader thereby providing structural rigidity to the wall as well as serving as a mounting for a detachable wear absorbing plate. The wear absorbing plate is positioned on the elongated discharge edge with its inner portion inwardly of the sidewall of the tank such that the heads of the flails shall strike the wear plate as the flails elongate due to wear to thereby protect the spreader from structural damage.

A breakaway mechanism mounted on the frame of an improved crop material roll forming machine engages a take-up and expansion member to cause the member to initially retain an upper flexible, roll-forming apron substantially in a contracted position as crop material, being initially rolled to form a core at a roll-forming area defined between the upper apron and a lower crop-conveying and roll-forming apron, builds to a desired predetermined density. The breakaway mechanism will release its engagement with the take-up member when the core of crop material reaches the desired predetermined density.
