Forceps can include an outer tube, a first jaw, a second jaw, and an inner tube. The outer tube can extend along a longitudinal axis and can include a pair of outer arms extending from a distal portion of the outer tube. The first jaw can be pivotably connected to the outer tube and the first jaw can include a first flange and a second flange each located at a proximal portion of the first jaw. The first flange and the second flange can each include a proximal portion extending outward of the outer tube when the jaws are in an open position. The proximal portions can be shaped to limit extension of the proximal portions laterally beyond the outer arms.

An instrument that includes an outer member, an inner member, and a jaw assembly. The inner member includes a first arm and a second arm. The jaw assembly includes a first jaw and a second jaw. The first jaw is connected to the first arm at a first pivot joint and to the outer member at a second pivot joint. The second jaw is connected to the second arm at a third pivot joint and to the outer member at a fourth pivot joint. The inner member is adapted to be moved distally relative to the outer member so that the first jaw pivots about the second pivot joint towards the second jaw and the second jaw pivots about the fourth pivot joint towards the first jaw thus moving the jaw assembly from the open position towards the closed position.

An electronic apparatus includes a circuit portion that is configured to control an operation of the electronic apparatus and a heat-activated mechanical switch including, for example, a shape-memory material. The shape-memory material has a property such that the shape-memory material assumes a predetermined shape when the electronic apparatus is heated to a transition temperature. The shape-memory material disables the apparatus by acting on the circuit portion when the shape-memory material assumes the predetermined shape.

The invention is directed to a disposable airway adapter which includes two optical windows and a reflector, positioned such that radiation transmitted through the first optical window into the airway passage will be reflected by the reflector and be transmitted through the second optical window and out of the airway passage. the disposable airway adapter is for use in connection with a carbon dioxide detector for determining the concentration of carbon dioxide present in the mixture of gases present in the airway passage.

The present invention comprises a method and device for providing an expandable introducer sheath. The method of employing the inventive device comprises inserting an elongate flexible tubular sheath into a vessel (with a proximal end of the sheath extending proximally outward through the skin), to slidably receive intravascular devices. When a larger size introducer sheath is desired, the sheath is manipulated while still in the vessel to expand its inner diameter to a larger size. In one embodiment, the sheath is made of a shape-memory polymer and is manipulated by inserting a heated mandrel (with an outer diameter larger than the inner diameter of the sheath) within the sheath to cause the sheath to expand to an inner diameter at least approximately equal to an outer diameter of the mandrel. The shape-memory polymer material ensures that the sheath will retain its expanded inner diameter. Alternatively, the sheath is formed from a telescoping multi-tubular arrangement of progressively larger tubes. In any case, insertion of the inventive sheath into the skin requires only a single small puncture which is then only expanded as needed while the sheath remains in place.

Inflation apparatus for inflating a dilatation balloon of a catheter includes a frame having a first receiver supporting the barrel of a syringe. An operator has a second receiver supporting the plunger of the syringe. The syringe includes a fluid port for connecting the syringe chamber to the lumen of the catheter. A motor is supported by the frame and operatively connected to the operator to move the piston to change fluid pressure within the syringe chamber. A release device permits quick release of the pressure in the balloon catheter without the use of the motor. A pressure sensor is mounted to the frame to measure the pressure in the chamber through a diaphragm on the syringe. The pressure sensor operates a microprocessor-controlled display, which provides display of inflation and duration information and calculates other information. A circuit selectively operates the motor. An inflation control connected to the circuit permits operation of the motor at selected rates of inflation/deflation or to selected specific inflation pressures.
