A fuel injector has a silicon micromachined nozzle plate which coacts with a fuel flow valve to control fuel flow out of the fuel injector.

A silicon compound nozzle has two generally planar parallel plates with offset openings coupled by a shear gap. Fluid flow in the shear gap is generally parallel to the plates and increases fluid dispersion.

A valve assembly for controlling fluid flow includes a valve plate and a nozzle plate which are not attached to each other but can be moved into and out of contact with each other. The valve plate has an opening for passing an actuator and fluid. A nozzle plate has an opening for passing fluid and the opening is aligned with a mesa on the valve plate which can seal the nozzle orifice. The actuator separates the nozzle plate from the valve plate to permit fluid flow and a spring means brings the nozzle plate into a closed position against the valve plate to stop fluid flow.

A method of forming a 360.degree. ceramic permanent magnet by utilizing a hot isostatic pressing technique on a ceramic preform paterial cylindrically formed and placed inside a deformable metal housing having an inner diameter that is approximately the same but only slightly larger than the outer diameter of the preform. A solid steel mandrel is provided in the center diameter of the hollow cylindrical preform. Crystal alignment and densification of the ceramic material is achieved by using the hot isostatic pressing technique applied to the outside of the housing, preform and mandrel assembly.

An improved exhaust gas oxygen sensor of the type adapted for installation in the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine. The improved sensor preferably uses a titania metal oxide ceramic element to sense the partial pressure of oxygen in the exhaust gases to which the sensor is exposed. The sensor has a steel body, a ceramic insulator which is used to support the titania sensing element and its wires which pass through the insulator bodies and as terminal pins inserted into enlarged passages in the insulator for connection to the titania sensing element wires. The terminal pins are of an improved design wherein a cement material in the enlarged passage of the insulator is made to flow into a groove in each of the terminal pins and into another space between the exterior of the terminal pin and the interior of the insulator passage. The cement material causes the bond to form between the terminal pin and the insulator and prevent leakage of exhaust gases from the exhaust conduit to flow through the sensor to the ceramic environment. Seepage of the cement material in a location to the terminal pin and its exterior contact point with the insulator also is prevented.
