A model to predict the quality of a lubricant base stock for use in a plurality of products having a plurality of viscosities. The compositional model is based on a quantitative analysis of key compositional parameters and performance criteria for the plurality of products representing the plurality of viscosities. The compositional model provides a method for making a lubricant base stock to be used in manufacturing a lubricant for a particular application from a refinery stream wherein the lubricant base stock and the refinery stream are characterizable according to a plurality of compositional components common to the base stock and to the refinery stream. This method begins with determining the acceptable region and adjusting for viscosity variations. Next, the amounts of the identified compositional components are identified for a lubricant base stock that, in combination, are required for acceptable lubricant performance and the amounts of identified components, in combination, in the refinery stream are determined to be outside of the acceptable range for such identified components. The refinery stream is then refined to produce a lubricant base stock having a combination of identified components within the acceptable range as determined by the model.

Control of crude refining by a method to predict lubricant base stock's ultimate lubricant preformance

A model to predict the quality of a lubricant base stock for use in a plurality of products having a plurality of viscosities. The compositional model predicts whether the composition of a new lubricant base stock is similar or dissimilar to known lubricant base stock compositions that have previously passed or failed performance tests. New base stock compositions, then, are evaluated in light of base stocks that have demonstrated acceptable performance in a plurality of products. The compositional model also predicts whether a combination of refinery streams can be blended for use in manufacturing a lubricant base stock.

Control of lubricant production by a method to predict a base stock's ultimate lubricant performance

A process for solvent dewaxing a waxy oil feed to obtain petroleum oil lubricating stock comprising the steps of contacting a warm waxy oil feed by indirect heat exchange first with cold filtrate, then with refrigerant to crystallize and precipitate the wax in the oil feed to form an oil/solvent/wax mixture. The oil/solvent/wax mixture is diluted with cold solvent to adjust the viscosity of the mixture and the mixture is fed to a filter which filters and removes the wax from the cold oil/solvent/wax mixture. A cold wax cake is recovered and a cold oil/solvent filtrate stream is recovered. The cold oil/solvent filtrate stream is fed, at the filtration temperature, to a selective permeable membrane. The membrane selectively separates the cold filtrate into a cold solvent permeate stream and a cold filtrate stream which contains the dewaxed oil and the remaining solvent. The cold solvent permeate stream at the filtration temperature is recycled to the filter feed stream. The cold filtrate stream is then contacted with the warm waxy oil feed by indirect heat exchange. After heat exchange with the warm waxy oil feed, the filtrate is sent to an oil/solvent separation operation in which the remaining solvent is removed from the dewaxed oil and recycled to the dewaxing process and the wax free lubricating oil stock product is recovered.

Particulate coal is rendered less subject to spontaneous ignition by simultaneously spraying or otherwise contacting it and cooling it with an aqueous emulsion in water of a light cycle oil, heavy cycle oil, clarified slurry oil, durene, and other carbonaceous materials derived from coal liquefaction and petroleum refining. Aqueous polymer emulsions and oxidation inhibitors can also be used.

Particulate coal is rendered less subject to spontaneous ignition by simultaneously spraying or otherwise contacting it and cooling it with an aqueous emulsion in water of foots oils, petrolatum filtrate, or hydrocracker recycle oils in water.

An inlet distributor system for a fixed bed catalyst reactor which includes an inlet deflector cone positioned to deflect liquid in cooperation with a splash plate onto a liquid distributor trough positioned therebelow. An upper tray is positioned beneath the distributor trough to receive liquid therefrom. The upper distributor tray has a series of risers in spaced position thereon and extending above and below the upper distributor tray. The risers are hollow and open above and below the upper distributor tray to permit vapor to pass through the tray and each riser has a plurality of weir slots cut into its outer surface through which liquid can pass through the tray. A lower distributor tray is positioned beneath the upper distributor tray to receive liquid passing through the weir slots of the risers. The lower distributor tray has a series of risers and downpipes thereon arranged in a predetermined pattern. Each of the risers and downpipes in said pattern extend above and below the lower distributor tray and have openings above and below the lower distributor tray to form a through passageway for liquid to pass through the tray when received from the upper distributor tray. The passageway in the downpipes is formed by an axial bore therethrough and the passageway in the risers is formed by its hollow tubular configuration open at the bottom and having a side opening therein above the upper surface of the lower distributor tray each riser includes another upper opening above the lower distributor tray to permit vapor to pass through the tray. The pattern of risers and downpipes provide an advantageous arrangement of passageways for liquid to be distributed to the catalytic bed therebelow.

A fractionation method and apparatus is disclosed for separating and recovering condensed and absorbed coke vapor from residual material leaving a coker combination tower to thereby obtain increased distillate yield. A resid flash down tower is positioned between the coker combination tower and a delayed coke furnace and operated to recover the higher value liquid product from the residual material containing absorbed coke vapor.

Heavy oil distillation system

A fractionation method and apparatus is disclosed for separating and recovering condensed and absorbed coke drum vapor from residual material leaving a coker combination tower to thereby obtain increased distillate yield. A resid flash down tower is positioned between the coker combination tower and a delayed coke furnace and operated to recover the higher value liquid product from the residual material containing absorbed coke drum vapor.
