A flame retardant composition for treating a high pulp content nonwoven web is provided. The flame retardant composition includes soluble solids formed from inorganic salts, such as ammonium polyphosphate and sulfur. The TGA range of such soluble solids is from about 175.degree. C. to about 370.degree. C. The flame retardant composition may be continuously and uniformly applied to the high pulp content nonwoven web by a non-compressive process.

Disclosed is a film which includes a microbial adsorbent and which is capable of providing a microbial barrier while still being able to allow passage of water vapor. The film has first and second surfaces and defines least one microporous passageway allowing communication, through the film, between the first and second surfaces. In particular, a portion of the microporous passageway is defined by the microbial adsorbent so that microbes attempting to pass through the film via a passageway must pass in close proximity to the microbial adsorbent. This arrangement allows the microbial adsorbent to interdict the microbe by adsorbing it and prohibiting its passage through the film.

Disclosed is a fabric which includes a microbial adsorbent and which is capable of providing a microbial barrier while still being able to allow passage of water vapor. The fabric is formed from a plurality of fibers which define at least one microporous passageway which allows communication, through the fabric, between its respective first and second surfaces. In particular, a portion of the microporous passageway is defined by the microbial adsorbent so that microbes attempting to pass through the fabric via such a passageway must pass in close proximity to the microbial adsorbent. This arrangement allows the microbial adsorbent to interdict the microbe by adsorbing it. Passage of the microbe through the fabric is thereby prohibited. Laminates of the fabric with other materials are also disclosed.

A self-regulating breathable microporous film layer transmits water vapor at normal use conditions, and reduces or eliminates the vapor transmission when the vapor in the environment becomes excessive. The film layer includes a voided polymer matrix and a plurality of fine water-swellable filler particles disposed within the voids. When there is an excess of vapor, the filler particles swell to block or partially block transmission of vapor through the voids and the film layer.

A high surface area oxidative catalyst smoke suppressive composition, smoke suppressive articles, and method of making such compositions and articles are disclosed. The smoke suppressive composition is a solid solution comprising a mixture of iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg) that promotes efficient combustion, articles treated with such compositions, and methods for making such smoke suppressive compositions and articles. The smoke suppressive composition is made by co-precipitating Fe and Mg from an aqueous solution in the presence of a base. The iron-magnesium composition demonstrates high surface area and efficient combustion for embodiments having iron in an amount from approximately 3 mol % to approximately 30 mol % and magnesium in an amount from approximately 97 mol % to approximately 70 mol %. The compositions provide superior smoke suppression for items such as cigarettes and smoke suppressive articles. The smoke suppressive compositions are particularly useful for reducing cigarette sidestream smoke in cigarettes.

There is disclosed a method of producing a non-burning wrapper for use with smoking products. A non-burning wrapper is formed by treating a base paper with a solution consisting essentially of water, calcium chloride and a reactive size for paper; drying the thus treated paper; coating one side of the thus treated base paper with a solution consisting essentially of water, calcium carbonate, potassium silicate and sodium carboxymethycellulose; and drying the thus treated and coated paper to form a non-burning wrapper for use with smoking products.

A wrapper for use in smoking articles such as cigarettes, and in particular, to a wrapper for smoking articles having a heat source, a physically separate aerosol generating means, and a mouthend piece. More specifically the invention relates to smoking articles which employ a substantially non-burnable paper used as an innerwrap and/or outerwrap which encircles at least a portion of the fuel element of such smoking articles.

Sheet material containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose especially useful in forming wrappers for smokeable articles such as cigarettes that results in reduced sidestream smoke. The sheet is preferably formed by incorporating as a filler in a cellulosic web an amount of high superficial surface area filler in the range generally of from about 5 to 50 percent by weight in the finished sheet. The cellulosic material may be flax fiber or other natural cellulosic fibers conventionally used for such wrappers. Additional fillers may be used up to a total of about 50 percent, and, preferably, a burn modifier, carboxylic acid salt, preferably a nonhydroxy acid salt such as succinic acid salt is included in an amount of 4 to 15 percent by weight. The sheet can be formed by any conventional papermaking method. When such papers are used as cigarette wrappers, they effect a reduction of the total particulate matter in sidestream smoke of up to about 75 percent with improved taste and odor and without serious deterioration of other desirable properties. In addition, the sheet of the invention provides normal ash appearance in a smoking article.

Nonwoven web comprising thermoplastic meltblown fibers or filaments predominantly present as agglomerates or multiple fused fiber areas. Such agglomerates in the web act as columns and impart a desired degree of strength and resistance to compaction. In contrast to prior art webs where such agglomerates have been considered undesirable, the webs of the present invention find particular utility when formed into cylinders as filter plugs for smoking articles. In smoking articles of the invention, the filter plugs have a desired pressure drop while demonstrating an unexpected degree of firmness, all at an economically attractive cost. Preferred embodiments include those where the machine direction strength to cross machine direction grab tensile ratios in the range of from about 1:1 to 4:1 and the fibers or filaments are made from polypropylene. Other embodiments include webs and filter plugs containing additives distributed throughout the web.

Controlled draft and efficiency filter element for smoking articles

The present invention relates to smoking articles having an improved mouthend piece. More specifically, it relates to cigarette-type smoking articles comprising a fuel element, a physically separate aerosol generating means including an aerosol forming material, and means for delivering the aerosol produced by the aerosol generating means to the user in the form of a mouthend piece, the mouthend piece including a nonwoven web segment formed from meltblown thermoplastic fibers or filaments, and a spacer member located between the aerosol generating means and the non woven web segment.

An improved method of making reconstituted tobacco using a dry-forming process. Fiberized tobacco stems and scrap are combined with tobacco material of a fine particle size. The resulting tobacco mixture is conveyed in an airstream and deposited on a moving foraminous surface. An adhesive is incorporated into or applied to the web bonding the tobacco particles into a coherent sheet, and the sheet is dried if necessary. The dried sheet may be divided into leaflets or shredded for further processing as reconstituted tobacco. In preferred embodiments, cellulose fibers are mixed with the tobacco particles prior to web formation to impart increased sheet strength. In a further embodiment tobacco fines are mixed with the adhesive and applied to the web in the adhesive composition. Results obtained by means of the present invention include cost savings particularly in terms of reduced capital costs. Because the tobacco is used substantially in its natural state, the aroma and other desirable tobacco attributes are retained.
