Hydrogen peroxide is produced by reacting hydrogen and oxygen in an acidic aqueous solution containing suspended therein a supported Group VIII noble metal catalyst in a system wherein the reaction medium has a thickness of at most about 2 millimeters.

Preparation of hydrogen peroxide

The present invention relates to a novel tellurium catalyst and its preparation, and to a process for preparing oxirane compounds using the novel catalyst. Specifically, the invention relates to a novel catalyst in which tellurium is chemically bound to a solid aromatic-type resin and to the reaction of olefinic compounds with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the bound tellurium catalyst to produce oxirane compounds.

Hydrogen peroxide is produced in a reaction between carbon monoxide, oxygen, and water in the presence of a solvent using a Group 8 noble metal as a catalyst. Especially preferred as the working solution is palladium chloride in acetone.

Olefins are oxidized to produce the corresponding epoxides by means of an aryl thallic carboxylate in the presence of an inert polar organic solvent and in the presence of water, the novel compound thallic benzoate being a preferred reactant.

A monovalent thallium compound is converted to a trivalent thallium compound by treating the thallium (I) compound with molecular oxygen in the presence of a Group VIII noble metal catalyst to oxidize the thallium (I) compound to a thallium (III) compound.

A monovalent thallium compound is converted to a trivalent thallium compound by treating the thallium (I) compound with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a Group VIII noble metal catalyst in a liquid medium to oxidize the thallium (I) compound to a thallium (III) compound.
