A disc brake assembly includes an anchor having a pair of spaced apart inwardly facing contoured surfaces between which a disc brake backing plate having an outwardly facing pair of complementarily contoured surfaces is located. There is a pair of slipper springs, each of which may be interposed between an outwardly facing and corresponding inwardly facing surface in either one of two distinct symmetrical positions. The two slipper springs are substantially identical and include a U-shaped portion with a leg extending from one U end so that the leg may form an abutment contact between a backing plate surface and the anchor surface during brake application. The two distinct symmetrical positions comprise one position with the leg extending generally inwardly from the U-shaped portion toward the brake disc axis, and another position with the leg extending generally outwardly from the U-shaped portion away from the brake disc axis.

High/low shoe abutment

A disc brake for a vehicle wherein first and second friction member have projections thereon that are located in grooves in first and second rails of an anchor. On movement of the first and second frictions members during a brake application, the projections slide in the grooves to maintain a parallel alignment between a braking surface thereon and radial braking surfaces on a rotor and at the same time transmit reactions forces into a rotor to oppose the rotation of the rotor. Braking surfaces on the projections engage the rotor to assist in opposing the rotation of a rotor during each brake application.

Disc brake

A parking brake including a disc fixed to a vehicle and a plurality of clips attached to the disc to align channels on first and second brake shoes with a braking surface on a drum. Each clip has a rectangular shape with a flat first end fixed to the disc and a U-shaped second end defined by parallel first and second sides separated by a spacer. A projection on the first end is mated with the disc to align the second end along a radial plane of the axis of the drum. The sides of the second end resiliently engage the channels and align friction surfaces on the first and second brake shoes with the braking surface. In addition, the clips attenuate any vibration that may occur between first and second brake shoes and the drum during movement of the vehicle to reducing the creation of noise in the brake.

Drum brake

A disc brake having an anchor bracket fixed to a vehicle, a rotor fixed to and rotatable with a wheel and a caliper that spans the disc and supports a pair of opposed braking pads with respect to the rotor. Parallel alignment members fixed to the caliper and having a corresponding set of generally parallel bores for receiving the alignment members in the anchor bracket to allow limited relative movement and caliper translation during a brake application and subsequent release. Plastic inserts disposed intermediate an alignment member and a corresponding bore to provide a desired minimum running clearance there between. The plastic inserts being formed and remaining in situ within the respective bores through a sprues or gate that extend from and are generally transversely to a bore to align the alignment members with the bores and corresponding the braking pads with the rotor.

Method of forming bushings between guide pins and guide pin bores

A disc brake having a caliper straddling a rotor; a fixed carrier, an actuator comprising a primary cylinder located in the caliper and closed by a piston; a guide arrangement including first and second pins for allowing the caliper to slide relative to the carrier on actuation, the first and second pins have a bound end fixed to the caliper and a free end respectively retained in first and second bores in the carrier by annular roll-back seals to define first and second auxiliary or secondary hydraulic cylinders. Inboard and outboard friction pads are positioned on opposite faces of the rotor by the piston and the caliper. In operation, the caliper, cylinder, and outboard brake pad are hydraulically moved to engage the outboard brake pad with the rotor while the primary cylinder hydraulically moves the inboard brake pad into engagement with the rotor to effect a brake application.

Full float multi-force caliper assembly

A parking brake having first and second brake shoes each of which has a first end that engages an anchor post on a backing plate and a second end that engages an adjuster. An actuator that is located adjacent an anchor post engages a first end and an adjuster engages a second end of webs for the first and second brake shoes. A brake cable that is connected to the actuator provides a force for moving the first and second brake shoes into engagement with a drum to effect a brake application. The adjuster is characterized by the adjuster mechanism including a yieldable member for reducing the space between the second end engagement between the webs to limit braking force to a predetermined maximum. A strut of the adjuster compresses at loads above a predetermined set load to thereby reduces the effective braking diameter, input loads and hence output torque.

Drum-in-hat torque limiter

A linkage for connecting a brake cable to an actuator lever in a drum-in-hat park brake assembly. The linkage is defined by a continuous wire that is shaped into a base with parallel and adjacent first and second legs located in a first plane perpendicular to the base and parallel and adjacent third and fourth legs located in a second plane perpendicular to the base. The first and second legs each have a first section that extend a first distance from the base to a first loop and a second section that extend a second distance from the first loop to a second loop while the third and fourth legs extend a third distance from the base. The base has an opening defined by a complementary shape created between the first leg and the third leg and the second leg and the fourth leg. The base receives a head member on a cable after the head is passed through the first loop and a force is applied to the cable to expand the first section of the first and second legs to allow the cable to be located in the opening in the base. Actuation forces are applied to a brake lever and transmitted to move the actuator lever that in turn moves first and second brake shoes into engagement with a drum to effect a brake application.

Linkage for joining a lever to a brake cable

A drum brake having a disc with a peripheral surface with a plurality of radial guides interspersed between a first radial abutment and a second radial abutment. The plurality of radial guides receive a first arcuate channel member on a first brake shoe and a second arcuate channel member on a second brake to align a first reaction surface on the first channel with the first radial abutment and a second reaction surface with the second radial abutment. An actuator provides a force to move the first reaction surface moves away from the first radial abutment and the second reaction surface from the second radial abutment to initiate a brake application. When a leading edge on a first friction member frictionally contacts a braking surface on a drum the first reaction surface continues to move away from the first radial abutment while second reaction surface associated with a trailing edge is moved back into engagement with the second radial abutment to oppose the braking force developed by the frictional engagement. During the frictional engagement, the plurality of radial guides engage the first and second arcuate channels to retain the first and second friction surfaces in perpendicular alignment with the braking surface.

An actuator mechanism in a drum-in-hat park brake having a housing with a first end that engages a first web of a first brake shoe and a second end that engages a second web of a second brake shoe. A lever pivotally retained in the housing has a first end that engages the first web and a second end with a hook thereon for receiving a loop end of a linkage connected to an input member. On receipt of an input force the lever pivots and exert an actuation force on the first and second webs to correspondingly moves first and second friction members associated with the first and second brake shoes into engagement with a drum to effect a brake application. The actuator mechanism is characterized in that the lever has a projection located between the hook and the first end, a notch that is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the lever and located on an edge of the projection, and a detent in a surface of the hook and by a clip member having a first portion initially located in the notch and a second portion initially located in the detent. An initial input force applied by the loop brings the loop end into engagement with the second portion and moves a lip on the second portion out of the detent and along the slot while the first portion correspondingly moves out of the notch such that when the loop end reaches the bottom of the throat of the hook, the lip snaps into the hole and a third portion of the clip is aligned with a tip of the hook to retain the loop end in the hook.

Actuator mechanism for drum in hat brake

A drum-in-hat park brake assembly having a first brake shoe retained on a backing plate by a first pin and a second brake shoe retained by a second pin. The first and second pins permit the first and second brake shoes to be moved in a radial plane and to rotate about an axis of an opening in the backing plate. The first and second brake shoes each have a first engagement end which is aligned on the backing plate by an anchor post and a second engagement end which is selectively spaced apart by an adjuster mechanism. A spring arrangement urges the first and second brake shoes toward the anchor post and into engagement with the adjuster mechanism. An actuator assembly is connected to the first engagement end of the first and second brake shoes and upon receiving an input force moves first and second friction pads associated with the first and second brake shoes into radial engagement with a drum. The radial engagement causes the first and second brake pads to rotate and bring one of the first engagement ends into contact with the anchor post. The anchor post provides resistance to the rotation of the first and second brake pads during a corresponding brake application. The anchor post is characterized by a projection that extends from a wheel bearing housing fixed to a cast knuckle for a suspension system of the vehicle to provide a direct link between a fixed support in the vehicle and the first and second pads to resist rotative torque developed through the engagement of the friction pads with the drum during a brake application.

Drum-in-hat park brake assembly

A parking brake having first and second brake shoes with a first end engaging an anchor post on a backing plate and a second end engaging an adjuster. An actuator located adjacent the anchor post has a first end that engages a first web on the first brake shoe and a second end the engages second web on the second brake shoe. A brake cable is connected to the actuator assembly for providing a force for moving the first and second brake shoes into engagement with the drum to effect a brake application. The actuator is characterized by a housing having first and second spaced apart walls with a first end and a second end. The first and second ends each have first and second ears with the first and second ears on the first end being joined together adjacent a central plane mid-way between the first and second side walls to establish a first slot that receives the first web. The first ears on said second end of the first and second walls are joined together adjacent the central plane while the second ear on the first side wall is located adjacent the central plane and the second ear of the second side wall is located in a plane parallel with the second side wall. The first and second ears on the second end establishing a second slot that receives the second web. A lever having a first end with a shoulder thereon and a second end with a hook thereon is pivotally located adjacent by a pin extending from the second ear on the first wall to the second ear on the second wall and bring the shoulder into engagement the second web. A spring located on the pin between the second end on the second side wall urging said first end of the lever into the central plane. A button located on the cable engages the second end of the lever such that the cable is located in the hook. An input force is applied to the second end of the lever by pulling on the cable to cause the shoulder to exert a force on the second web while a corresponding force is exerted on the first web through the first slot to move the first and second shoes into engagement with the drum to effect a brake application.

Housing for a bearing

A mechanical actuator (40) for a disc brake assembly (10) to effect a parking brake application. The mechanical actuator (40) includes a housing (62) for retaining an end plate (56) which is rotationally retained in a bore (60) and connected to an end plate (48) which is axially retained in the bore (60). End plate (56) is connected to end plate (48) by a plurality of pivotal connecting rods (50,52,54). The connecting rods (50,52,54) each have an end retained in indentations (74,76,78) in end plate (56) and indentations (75,77,79) in end plate (48). An input applied by lever (46) causes end plate (48) to rotate about an axis (70) of bore (60) and connecting rods (50,52,54) to pivot about indentations (74,76,78) and since end plate (56) is rotationally restrained the force from connecting rods (50, 52,54) is translated into an axial force component which moves end plate (56). The force component varies as a function of angle of rotation of end plate (48). Initial rotation causes a large displacement of end plate (56) but as the connecting rods (50,52,54) approach planes which are parallel to the axis (70) of bore (60), a smaller displacement occurs however with smaller displacement more of the input force from the input lever (46) is transmitted to end plate (56). The three connecting rods (50,52,54) form a plane through which substantially equal forces are transmitted into end plate (56) to mechanically move friction pads (28,30) into engagement with rotor (12) and effect a desired clamping force to retain the rotor (12) in a fixed position with respect to the vehicle.
