A rubber composition with disperse phase particles containing poly(phenylene ether) can be formed by a method that includes melt blending an uncured rubber with a poly(phenylene ether) composition containing a poly(phenylene ether) and an oil to form an uncured rubber composition, then curing the uncured rubber composition. Before being blended with the rubber, the poly(phenylene ether) composition exhibits a glass transition temperature of about 40 to about 140&#xb0; C., and during blending with the rubber, the oil component of poly(phenylene ether) composition migrates from the poly(phenylene ether) composition to the rubber, leaving a poly(phenylene ether)-containing disperse phase that gives rise to a second hysteresis peak temperature of about 160 to about 220&#xb0; C. as measured by dynamic mechanical analysis of the cured rubber composition. Also described are the poly(phenylene ether) composition used in the method, a cured rubber composition formed by the method, and a tire containing the cured rubber composition.

A thermoplastic composition includes the product of melt kneading a composition including a poly(arylene ether), a polyolefin, an acid-functionalized hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene, and a polyamine compound. The composition exhibits substantially improved chemical resistance compared to a corresponding composition lacking the polyamine compound. Methods of preparing the composition and articles prepared for the composition are also described. The composition is particularly useful for fabricating halogen-free tubes for sheathing automotive wiring harnesses.

Poly(arylene ether)/polyolefin composition, method, and article

A composition comprises poly(arylene ether), a rubber modified poly(alkenyle aromatic) resin, and an unsaturated impact modifier. The composition may further comprise an encapsulated fluoropolymer. The melt strength of the composition, measured as the hang time of an extruded tube, is especially suited for blow molding methods. The composition exhibits good melt strength, surface quality and/or sandability and is particularly useful in blow molding applications.

A poly(arylene ether)-polyolefin composition is prepared by melt-blending a poly(arylene ether), a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin, a hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene, and an unhydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene to form a first blend, and melt-blending the first blend and a polyolefin and additional hydrogenated block copolymer to form a second blend. A reinforcing filler and/or an ethylene/alpha-olefin elastomeric copolymer may, optionally, be added during formation of the second blend or in an additional step. Multiple mixing elements, low throughput, and high extruder rotations per minute may be used to achieve high energy mixing of the first and second blends. Compositions prepared by the method exhibit an improved balance of impact strength, stiffness, and heat resistance, as well as reduced variability of physical properties.

Method for the preparation of a poly(arylene ether)-polyolefin composition, and composition prepared thereby

A thermoplastic resin composition with improved flame retardance, flow and heat deflection temperature includes a thermoplastic resin; resorcinol diphenyl phosphate; and an additive blend. The additive blend includes a combination of melamine polyphosphate and ferrocene. The thermoplastic composition reduces the amounts of resorcinol diphenyl phosphate required for effective flame retardancy. Moreover, the effective amounts of melamine polyphosphate and ferrocene do not deleteriously affect other properties of the thermoplastic composition such as Izod strength, flow properties, and heat deflection temperatures. A process for manufacturing a thermoplastic composition is also disclosed.

The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a thermoplastic composition comprising a polyphenylene ether resin and a styrenic resin wherein the processes comprises a concentrate of polyphenylene ether resin with an organic phosphate compound. The concentrate allows for ease of handling of polyphenylene ether resin without the risk of dust ignition while obtaining substantially the same physical properties as obtained with polyphenylene ether resin powder. The invention also relates to articles formed out of the compositions made by the process of the invention.

The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a thermoplastic composition comprising a polyphenylene ether resin and optionally, a styrenic resin wherein the processes comprises a polyphenylene ether resin in a particulate form having less than about 5% by weight, preferably less than about 2% by weight, more preferably less than about 1% by weight, and most preferably essentially no particles less than about 75 microns in size. The particulate form allows for ease of handling of polyphenylene ether resin with a substantially reduced risk of dust ignition while obtaining substantially the same physical properties as obtained with polyphenylene ether resin powder. The invention also relates to articles formed out of the compositions made by the process of the invention.

Polyphenylene ether resin concentrates

A process for making reduced gloss thermoplastic resin compositions is provided. The process involves compounding a nitrile polymer with an electrophilic reagent to form a polymeric gel compound, blending the polymeric gel compound with a first thermoplastic resin and a weight ratio of between 5:1 and 0.5:1 to make a concentrate comprising gels dispersed in the first thermoplastic resin, and admixing the concentrate with a second thermoplastic resin produced the desired composition, wherein the concentrate is used at a level of from 2 to 60 percent by weight based on the total weight of the composition. The process provides improved product consistency, and consistently yields a product exhibiting reduced gloss and high levels of impact strength with a uniformly dispersed concentration of polymeric gels therein. The compositions are useful in making molded articles exhibiting consistent reduced gloss and high impact strengths.
