There is provided an apparatus, method and medium. The apparatus comprises processing circuitry to process instructions and a reorder buffer identifying a plurality of entries having state information associated with execution of one or more of the instructions. The apparatus comprises allocation circuitry to allocate entries in the reorder buffer, and to allocate at least one compressed entry corresponding to a plurality of the instructions. The apparatus comprises memory access circuitry responsive to an address associated with a memory access instruction corresponding to access-sensitive memory and the memory access instruction corresponding to the compressed entry, to trigger a reallocation procedure comprising flushing the memory access instruction and triggering reallocation of the memory access instruction without the compression. The allocation circuitry is responsive to a frequency of occurrence of memory access instructions addressing the access-sensitive memory meeting a predetermined condition, to suppress the compression whilst the predetermined condition is met.

Compression of entries in a reorder buffer

A data processing apparatus is provided that comprises rename circuitry for performing a register rename stage of a pipeline in respect of a stream of operations. Move elimination circuitry performs a move elimination operation on the stream of operations in which a move operation is eliminated and the register rename stage performs an adjustment of an identity of registers in the stream of operations to compensate for the move operation being eliminated and demotion circuitry reverses or inhibits the adjustment in response to one or more conditions being met.

Move elimination

A data processing apparatus includes detection circuitry that detects a parent instruction and a child instruction from a stream of instructions. The parent instruction references a destination register that is referenced as a source register by the child instruction. Adjustment circuitry then adjusts the child instruction to produce an adjusted child instruction whose behaviour is logically equivalent to a behaviour of executing the parent instruction followed by the child instruction.

Instruction fusion

A data processing apparatus is provided. It includes processing circuitry for speculatively executing a plurality of instructions. Storage circuitry stores a current state of the processing circuitry and a plurality of previous states of the processing circuitry. Execution of the plurality of instructions changes the current state of the processing circuitry. Flush circuitry replaces, in response to a miss-prediction, the current state of the processing circuitry with a replacement one of the plurality of previous states of the processing circuitry.

Storing a processing state based on confidence in a predicted branch outcome and a number of recent state changes

A processing apparatus supporting register renaming is provided with checkpoint circuitry to capture register mapping checkpoints indicative of speculative register mappings between logical registers and physical registers at a given point of speculative execution, and register group tracking circuitry to maintain tracking information for groups of logical registers. The tracking information for a given group indicates whether the given group is a changed group comprising at least one logical register for which a corresponding speculative register mapping has changed since a last checkpoint was captured, or an unchanged group for which none of the logical registers in that group have had their speculative register mappings changed since the last checkpoint was captured. When capturing a new register mapping checkpoint, unchanged groups of logical registers are excluded from the new register mapping checkpoint. This can save power in a register mapping checkpointing scheme.

Checkpointing speculative register mappings

Mechanisms are provided for partial flush handling with multiple branches per instruction group. The instruction fetch unit sorts instructions into groups. A group may include a floating branch instruction and a boundary branch instruction. For each group of instructions, the instruction sequencing unit creates an entry in a global completion table (GCT), which may also be referred to herein as a group completion table. The instruction sequencing unit uses the GCT to manage completion of instructions within each outstanding group. Because each group may include up to two branches, the instruction sequencing unit may dispatch instructions beyond the first branch, i.e. the floating branch. Therefore, if the floating branch results in a misprediction, the processor performs a partial flush of that group, as well as a flush of every group younger than that group.

Processor and method for partially flushing a dispatched instruction group including a mispredicted branch

A processor having multiple cores coordinates functions performed on the cores to automatically, dynamically and repeatedly reconfigure the cores for optimal performance based on characteristics of currently executing software. A core running a thread detects a multi-core characteristic of the thread and assigns one or more other cores to the thread to dynamically combine the cores into what functionally amounts to a common core for more efficient execution of the thread.

Issue logic identifies a simple fixed point instruction, included in a unified payload, which is ready to issue. The simple fixed point instruction is a type of instruction that is executable by both a fixed point execution unit and a load-store execution unit. In turn, the issue logic determines that the unified payload does not include a load-store instruction that is ready to issue. As a result, the issue logic issues the simple fixed point instruction to the load-store execution unit in response to determining that the simple fixed point instruction is ready to issue and determining that the unified payload does not include a load-store instruction that is ready to issue.

An information handling system includes a processor with a bifurcated unified issue queue that may perform unified issue queue VSU store instruction dependency operations. The bifurcated unified issue queue BUIQ maintains VSU store instructions in the form of internal operations data. The BUIQ includes a unified issue queue UIQand a unified issue queue UIQ. The BUIQ may manage a particular VSU store instruction from one UIQ to determine data dependencies and employ the other UIQ to determine address dependencies of that particular VSU store instruction. The UIQs employ a dependency matrix including a dependency array. The dependency array data maintains both data and address dependency information. The particular VSU store instruction issues to execution units such as VSUs for data dependency information and load store units (LSUs) for address dependency information. A particular VSU store instruction may execute to provide data dependency information independent of address dependency information.

Information handling system including a processor with a bifurcated issue queue

A mechanism is provided for tracking deallocated load instructions. A processor detects whether a load instruction in a set of instructions in an issue queue has missed. Responsive to a miss of the load instruction, an instruction scheduler allocates the load instruction to a load miss queue and deallocates the load instruction from the issue queue. The instruction scheduler determines whether there is a dependence entry for the load instruction in an issue queue portion of a dependence matrix. Responsive to the existence of the dependence entry for the load instruction in the issue queue portion of the dependence matrix, the instruction scheduler reads data from the dependence entry of the issue queue portion of the dependence matrix that specifies a set of dependent instructions that are dependent on the load instruction and writes the data into a new entry in a load miss queue portion of the dependence matrix.

An information handling system includes a processor with an issue unit (IU) that may perform instruction dependency tracking for successive instruction issue operations. The IU maintains non-shifting issue queue (NSIQ) and shifting issue queue (SIQ) instructions along with relative instruction to instruction dependency information. A mapper maps queue position data for instructions that dispatch to issue queue locations within the IU. The IU may test an issuing producer instruction against consumer instructions in the IU for queue position (QPOS) and register tag (RTAG) matches. A matching consumer instruction may issue in a successive manner in the case of a queue position match or in a next processor cycle in the case of a register tag match.

A design structure embodied in a non-transitory machine readable medium used in a design process includes an apparatus for implementing speculative clock gating of digital logic circuits, including operation valid logic configured to generate, in a first pipeline stage n, a valid control signal input to a first register in a second pipeline stage n+1, the valid control signal indicative of when an operation is qualified to be performed by the second pipeline stage n+1; and speculative valid logic configured to generate, in the first pipeline stage, a speculative valid control signal used to gate a clock signal to a plurality of additional registers in the second pipeline stage, wherein the speculative valid control signal is generated using only a subset of a total number of control inputs used in generating the valid control signal, and wherein the clock signal is sent directly to the first register. The design structure includes a netlist describing the apparatus for implementing speculative clock gating of digital logic circuits included in a multiple stage pipeline design.

An information handling system includes a processor that may perform issue queue virtual load/store instruction operations. The issue queue maintains load and store instructions with a real/virtual dependency flag. The issue queue provides storage resources for real and virtual load/store instructions. Real load/store instructions execute in a load store unit LSU. Virtual load/store instructions are pending execution in the LSU. The LSU may keep track of each virtual load/store instruction within the issue queue by thread, type, and pointer data. Provided that all dependencies are clear for a pending virtual load/store instruction, the LSU marks the pending virtual load/store instruction as real. The pending virtual load/store instruction may then issue to the LSU as a real load/store instruction.

A system and method for issuing load-dependent instructions in an issue queue in a processing unit. A load miss queue is provided. The load miss queue comprises a physical address field, an issue queue position field, a valid identifier field, a source identifier field, and a data type field. A load instruction that misses a first level cache is dispatched, and both the physical address field and the data type field are set. A load-dependent instruction is identified. In response to identifying the load-dependent instruction, each of the issue queue position field, valid identifier field, and source identifier field are set. If the issue queue position field refers to a flushed instruction, the valid identifier field is cleared. The load instruction is recycled, and a value of the valid identifier field is determined. The load-dependent instruction is then selected for issue on a next processing cycle independent of an age of the load-dependent instruction.

A method for implementing speculative clock gating of digital logic circuits in a multiple stage pipeline design includes generating, in a first pipeline stage n, a valid control signal that is input to a first register in a second pipeline stage n+1, the valid control signal indicative of when an operation is qualified to be performed by the second pipeline stage n+1; and generating, in the first pipeline stage, a speculative valid control signal that is used to gate a clock signal to a plurality of additional registers in the second pipeline stage, wherein the speculative valid control signal is generated using only a subset of a total number of control inputs used in generating the valid control signal, and wherein the clock signal is sent directly, without gating, to the first register in the second pipeline stage.
