Compositions of amine terminated polyamidoamine resins useful for curing epoxy resins are disclosed comprising combinations of fatty monocarboxylic acids, aromatic mono- and dicarboxylic acids, and polyethyleneamines, wherein the ratio of equivalents of fatty monocarboxylic acid to aromatic monocarboxylic acid can range from about 1:0.2 to about 1:1.5, the ratio of equivalents of monocarboxylic acids to aromatic dicarboxylic acid can range from about 1:0.1 to about 1:0.6, and the ratio of moles of total polyamine to equivalents of total acid can range from about 0.8:1 to about 1.3:1. Coating compositions comprising these polyamidoamine resins are also disclosed.

Polyamidoamine curing agents based on mixtures of fatty and aromatic carboxylic acids

Reactive diluents comprise the amide and/or imidazoline reaction products of low molecular weight carboxylic acids, such as acetic acid, and polyalkyleneamines, such as 2-aminoethylpiperazine (AEP) and triethylenetetramine (TETA). The reactive diluents are prepared by condensation reaction of the carboxylic acid and the polyalkyleneamine at elevated temperature generating a mixture of unreacted polyalkyleneamine, amides and/or imidazolines. The reactive diluent reaction products are used to reduce the viscosity of high viscosity polyamidoamines prepared from fatty dimer acids and polyethyleneamines. Also disclosed is an epoxy composition comprising the epoxy curative composition of a polyamidoamine curing agent reduced in viscosity by the addition of the reactive diluent reaction product and an epoxy resin, such as the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A.

Curative compositions of amine terminated polyamide resins blended with a deaminated bis-(p-aminocyclohexyl)methane composition (DeAms) are useful for curing adhesive epoxy resin compositions. The polyamides comprise combinations of fatty mono-acids, dimer acids, polyethyleneamines, and piperazine ring containing polyamines which are piperazine or N-aminoalkylpiperazine, where the alkyl chain is a C2 to C6 alkyl chain, wherein the ratio of equivalents of fatty mono-acid to dimer acid can range from about 0.001:1 to about 1:1, the ratio of moles of piperazine ring containing polyamine to polyethylene amine can range from about 0.1:1 to about 1:1, and the ratio of moles of polyamine to equivalents of acid can range from about 0.6:1 to about 1.2:1. DeAms is blended at 2 to 40 wt % based on polyamide. Adhesive compositions comprising these curatives are also disclosed.

Flexible epoxy resins are made by curing the epoxy with an amine curing agent in the presence of a low molecular weight acrylate copolymer made from a major amount of a lower aliphatic ester or amide of acrylic or methacrylic acid and a minor amount of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having functionality reactive with functional groups present in the epoxy resin or its curing agent. The acrylate copolymer has a number average molecular weight in the range of 1000 to 6000, preferably 2000 to 3000, and a ratio of weight average to number average molecular weight in the range of 1 to 3.5. Copolymers of butylacrylate and acrylic acid or maleic anhydride are favored. Further advantages are realized by including in the cure formulation a monofunctional diluent reactive with the curative.

Reactive accelerators for amine cured epoxy resins

This invention relates to improved one part polyepoxide resins which are tough and have enhanced flexible and elastic properties. The polyepoxide resins comprise a polyepoxide resin based on a polyglycidyl ether of a phenol, an oxazolidone toughener and a latent amine curative. The improvement in the polyepoxide resin formulation comprises incorporating an oxazolidone toughener represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is the residue of an aliphatic glycol or aliphatic ether glycol having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms.

Polyepoxide resins incorporating epoxy terminated urethanes as tougheners

This invention relates to improved polyepoxide resins having enhanced physical and elastic properties. The polyepoxide resins comprise a polyepoxide resin based on a polyglycidyl ether of a phenolic-type compound and an acrylate-terminated urethane prepolymer. The improvement in the polyepoxide resin formulation comprises incorporating a polymethylated amine curative having two secondary amine hydrogens represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkylene or polyalkylene polyamine having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms. The presence of the aliphatic amine reactive component along with the acrylate-terminated urethane prepolymer results in an epoxy resin having enhanced properties.
