A unique transformer includes a first yoke formed of laminations oriented parallel to a first plane; a second yoke formed of laminations oriented parallel to the first plane; and a center leg formed of laminations oriented parallel to a second plane oriented at a non-zero angle relative to the first plane. The center leg includes a first end. The first yoke and the second yoke are in contact with the center leg at the first end. The transformer includes a coil disposed about the center leg, and a butt joint between the center leg and at least one of the first yoke and the second yoke.

A coil for a transformer includes first and second coil segments with each coil segment being defined by successive layers of wound conductor sheeting. The coil segments are electrically connected together and are adjacent, defining a space there-between. A plurality of cooling duct pairs are disposed between certain of the layers in each of the first and second coil segments such that, for each cooling duct pair, an end of a cooling duct disposed in the first coil segment is adjacent to an end of a cooling duct disposed in the second coil segment, with the ends being disposed in the space. A connector connects the adjacent ends of each pair of cooling ducts.

A method provides a radial drop winding for an open wound transformer. A plurality of non-electrically conductive posts are arranged to define an interior space. Each post is of generally L-shape having a main body and a leg extending from a bottom end of the main body. During an open winding process, conductive wire is dropped to build up lengthwise along the posts to define at least one generally cylindrical winding segment supported by the legs of the posts.
