A compression ignition engine can be quickly and easily converted into a dual fuel engine simply by adding a gaseous fuel supply system, by disconnecting the governor actuating lever from the throttle pedal, and by adding an electronic controller which controls the operation of the gaseous fuel supply system and which sets the governor actuating lever at a position which causes the engine to deliver pilot fuel at a desired quantity. Operation is simplified by setting the governor using a droop control technique inherent in governor operation. The system can be automatically calibrated to assure the supply of fuel at a precisely controlled quantity per stroke at all engine speeds. The pilot fuel injection system of the resulting engine is non-invasive and permits inherent safety features of the governor to be retained.

Dual fuel engine having governor controlled pilot fuel injection system

An electronically controlled fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine. The timing of the commencement of fuel injection into each combustion chamber is not fixed relative to the rotational position of the camshaft or other engine components. A unit injector assembly associated with each combustion chamber includes a control module and an accumulator type injector module. The control module contains a solenoid valve and, in some embodiments, a hydraulic pressure intensifier. The accumulator type injector module contains an injector nozzle, a hydraulic accumulator, and a non-return valve for admitting liquid fuel under pressure into the accumulator. In operation, an electrical control system supplies an electrical signal to the control module an appreciable portion of the engine cycle in advance of the time when fuel injection is to be initiated in the particular combustion chamber. In response to that electrical signal, the solenoid valve admits liquid fuel under pressure into the hydraulic pressure intensifier. The output of the intensifier provides a metering and intensifying chamber in which the pressure of the fuel continues to increase until near the time when fuel injection is to commence. As pressure builds up, fuel flows through the non-return valve into the accumulator. Under control of the electrical signal the solenoid valve then shuts off the flow of liquid fuel into the intensifier. The transfer of fuel under high pressure from the intensifier chamber to the accumulator is discontinued due to the non-return valve, and the injector nozzle then fires. Alternatively, the solenoid valve admits liquid fuel under pressure directly through the non-return valve into the accumulator, with the turn-off of the solenoid valve causing the injector nozzle to fire. The control system may be utilized for operating the engine in a modified engine cycle in which firing cycles are selectively eliminated. The control system may also be utilized for controlling different cylinders of an engine differently from each other. The control of engine power is accomplished by either electrical or hydraulic means, or a combination thereof, and does not involve any mechanical adjustments within the unit injector assemblies.

Pressure-controlled fuel injection for internal combustion engines

A fast-response solenoid valve. A three-way form has a body with three successive separated openings interconnected by a linear fluid pathway having two chambers lying between successive pairs of openings, each with a movable ball and a ball seat in respective ball cages. Each cage has a cylindrical exterior wall in snug engagement with the wall of the linear fluid passageway, a seat at one end, and a tanged retainer portion at the other end, so that, each ball is retained in its cage for limited axial movement between its seat and its tanged portion. A cylindrical non-magnetic tube is aligned with the linear fluid pathway, one end of the tube abutting a portion of the body. A non-magnetic end plug is held at a fixed position at the distal end of the tube, and a magnetic guide plug is held at a fixed position in the tube spaced away from the end plug. A solenoid plunger is in said tube, movable in between the two plugs and in connection with a plunger pin that engages one of the balls. There is also a two-way valve form.

Fast response solenoid valve

A power transmission having a single Ravigneau-type planetary assembly, having a single carrier with two sets of planet gears, two sun gears, and one ring gear. A first sun gear is connected by a first set of planet gears to the ring gear; the ring gear itself is directly and rigidly connected to an output shaft. A speed-varying module is connected in driving relation to the input shaft and in driving relationship to the first sun gear. The speed varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being connected in driving relation to the input shaft, the other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, being connected in driving relation to the first sun gear. The input shaft is also connectable by a first clutch to the carrier and by a second clutch to the second sun gear. A brake grounds the carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output through the ring gear in a hydrostatic mode.

Transmission with a first-stage hydrostatic mode and two hydromechanical

A power transmission having two planetary assemblies, each having at least one carrier with planet gears, at least one sun gear, and at least one ring gear. A speed-varying module is connected in driving relation to the input shaft and in driving relationship to the sun gear or gears of the first planetary assembly. The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being connected in driving relation to the input shaft, the other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, being connected in driving relation to the sun gear. The input shaft is also connected directly to a sun gear of the second planetary assembly and is further connectable by a clutch to a carrier of the first planetary assembly. Another clutch enables connecting the carrier of the first planetary assembly to a ring gear of the second planetary assembly. A brake grounds the first carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output through a ring gear of the first planetary assembly in a hydrostatic mode. The carrier of the second planetary assembly is connected in rigid driving relationship to that first ring gear, and in all ranges these two elements transmit the drive to the output shaft.

A hydromechanical transmission especially suited to track-laying vehicles. A series of planetary assemblies are provided in conjunction with a hydrostatic driving module and a hydrostatic steering module. Every range may operate in both forward and reverse modes, and the change between forward and reverse can be made in any range. Efficient operation in moving straight ahead or back and on turns is assured.

Four-range hydromechanical transmission with hydrostatic steering module

A power transmission having three distinct ranges: (1) hydrostatic, (2) simple power-split hydromechanical, and (3) compound power-split hydromechanical. A single compound planetary assembly has two sun gears, two ring gears, and a single carrier with two sets of elongated planet gears. The two sun gears may be identical in size, and the two ring gears may be identical in size. A speed-varying module in driving relationship to the first sun gear is clutchable, in turn, to (1) the input shaft and (2) the second sun gear. The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being the one clutchable to either the input shaft or to the second sun gear. The other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, is connected in driving relation to the first sun gear. A brake grounds the carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output shaft through the first ring gear in a hydrostatic mode, the first ring gear being rigidly connected to the output shaft. The input shaft is also clutchable to the second ring gear of the compound planetary assembly.

Hydromechanical transmission with compound planetary assembly

A power transmission having two planetary assemblies, each having at least one carrier with planet gears, at least one sun gear, and at least one ring gear. A speed-varying module is connected in driving relation to the input shaft and in driving relationship to the sun gear or gears of the first planetary assembly. The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being connected in driving relation to the input shaft, the other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, being connected in driving relation to the sun gear. The input shaft is also connectable by a first clutch to a carrier of the first planetary assembly and by a second clutch to a sun gear of the second planetary assembly. A brake grounds the first carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output through a ring gear of the first planetary assembly in a hydrostatic mode. The carrier of the second planetary assembly being connected in driving relationship to that ring gear, and in all ranges these two elements transmit the drive to the output shaft.

This transmission has a first planetary gear assembly having first input means connected to an input shaft, first output means, and first reaction means, and a second planetary gear assembly having second input means connected to the first input means, second output means, and second reaction means connected directly to the first reaction means by a reaction shaft. First clutch means, when engaged, connect the first output means to an output shaft in a high driving range. A hydrodynamic drive is used; for example, a torque converter, which may or may not have a stationary case, has a pump connected to the second output means, a stator grounded by an overrunning clutch to the case, and a turbine connected to an output member, and may be used in a starting phase. Alternatively, a fluid coupling or other type of hydrodynamic drive may be used. Second clutch means, when engaged, for connecting the output member to the output shaft in a low driving range. A variable-displacement hydraulic unit is mechanically connected to the input shaft, and a fixed-displacement hydraulic unit is mechanically connected to the reaction shaft. The hydraulic units are hydraulically connected together so that when one operates as a pump the other acts as a motor, and vice versa. Both clutch means are connected to the output shaft through a forward-reverse shift arrangement. It is possible to lock out the torque converter after the starting phase is over.

Hydromechanical transmission with hydrodynamic drive

A power transmission having two planetary assemblies, each having its own carrier and its own planet, sun, and ring gears. A speed-varying module is connected in driving relation to the input shaft and in driving relationship to the two sun gears, which are connected together. The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being connected in driving relation to the input shaft, the other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, being connected in driving relation to the sun gears. A brake grounds the first carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output shaft through the first ring gear in a hydrostatic mode, the first ring gear being rigidly connected to the output shaft. The input shaft also is clutchable to either the carrier or the ring gear of the second planetary assembly. The output shaft is also clutchable to the carrier of the second planetary assembly when the input is clutched to the ring gear of the second planetary assembly, and is clutchable to the ring gear of the second planetary assembly when the input is clutched to the carrier thereof.

A brake grounds the first carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output through the first ring gear in a hydrostatic mode. The carrier of the third planetary assembly drives the ring gear of the second planetary assembly, and a first clutching means connects the second carrier with the output in a second range, the brake for grounding the first carrier then being released. A second clutching means enables the third ring gear to drive the output shaft in a third range.

A power transmission having three simple planetary assemblies, each having its own carrier and its own planet, sun, and ring gears. A speed-varying module is connected in driving relation to the input shaft and in driving relationship to the sun gears of the first two planetary assemblies, these two sun gears being connected together on a common shaft. The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being connected in driving relation to the input shaft, the other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, being connected in driving relation to the sun gears. The input shaft is also connected to drive the second ring gear and, furthermore is clutchable to the carrier of the third planetary assembly. A brake grounds the first carrier in the first range and in reverse and causes drive to be delivered to the output through the first ring gear in a hydrostatic mode. The carrier of the second planetary assembly drives the ring gear of the third planetary assembly, which is clutchable to the output shaft, and the sun gear of the third planetary assembly is mounted rigidly to the output shaft.

Hydromechanical transmission with three simple planetary assemblies, one

A relatively inexpensive simplified type of split-torque power transmission. A simple planetary gear assembly is employed having a carrier connected to the input with a set of planet gears, a ring gear, and a sun gear. Suitable speed-varying means are used, such as two variable-stroke hydraulic units, each having rotary shafts and driving relation therewith, the two units being hydraulically connected together so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor, and vice versa. Two gear trains respectively connect the ring gear to the first rotary shaft and the sun gear to the second rotary shaft. A first clutch means connects the first rotary shaft in driving relation to the output means, and a second clutch means connects the second rotary shaft in driving relation to the output shaft. A three-range transmission and a four-range transmission are also shown.
